Caloundra Cooee 1 Charles Woodward Drive Caloundra QLD 4551 Telephone: (07) admin@caloundragolf.com.au Website: November 2018 PRESIDENT S REPORT The greens are recovering well after the renovations and with the arrival of our new greens mower we expect to be back to our normal maintaining pattern shortly. After a few instances on our practice fairway, the Management Committee will be looking at improving safety for people using this area. The main problem comes from players teeing off the first tee. We will examine several different ways to proceed to help alleviate this problem. As alluded to in the Strategic Plan, we are also looking at options to improve the practice facilities of the club in general. Repair work around our new dam is continuing with new turf laid and work on repairing the concrete path is underway. This dam project has been a great success and will prove it's worth in the future. Jim Burns President Inside this Issue: Financial Report pg 2 Greens Report pg 3 Mens Match pg 4 Ladies Match pg 6 Pro Shop pg 9 The Veterans Voice pg 15 Please note that all drivers of motorised buggies on the course must follow the directional signs. Members with medical certificates are not exempt from this rule. Please refrain from driving your buggies onto sensitive parts of the course. The revamping of our gaming area is progressing, with some newer machines already installed. We expect to have everything completed shortly. Our office staff have had several reports lately of people using excessive speed when entering and driving through the car parks. There have been a couple of very close calls. Please ensure you stick to the speed limit of 10km p/hr while driving through the car park area. As this is the last newsletter for 2018 I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of you and your families a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Safe New Year! I look forward to seeing you all in 2019! 1
FINANCIAL REPORT Well unfortunately after a nice start to the year October got us again with quite a few washed out days resulting in a drop in green fees, comp and visitors, which also flows through to buggy usage and general trading being down a little for the month. Expenditure was over budget with admin and match on track, but course over budget due mainly to some more bunker improvements and a bulk fertiliser purchase, pushing them over budget for the month. Although we did budget for a quieter month with 5 week pays etc, overall was a loss of ($34,388) for October, which put a bit of a dent in things Y.T.D. Neville Reid Treasurer Major capital additions included, new greens mower, cylinder grinder and the finalisation of the dam works. With predicted improved weather, hopefully in the next report we can give a positive result for the first half year. As this is the last newsletter for the year I d like to wish everyone at the club, all our fantastic staff who do an amazing job, all the volunteers, all my fellow players who smile graciously as they take my money every week, a very safe and a very Merry Xmas and New Year and looking forward to an outstanding Cheers & more golfing Neville 2
GREENS REPORT Greens renovations has come and gone again this spring, and due to some annoying rain, it was a real challenge to get the job done. We ended up scarifying all the greens on the Monday and coring and top-dressing the greens on the Thursday. Thank you to the ladies for understanding our dramas and turning their Thursday competition into a 9 hole event at the last minute. Wayne Anderson Greens Superintendent As I am putting this article together, we are almost at the three week mark after reno s, and I am very happy with the result. The greens are at 3.5mm at the moment, and if they keep improving like they are, then they should be down to our normal height of 3mm at the four week mark. Our usual troublesome greens are not as good as most of the greens and there are a few small bare patches on the edges of a few greens. These bare patches will be turfed in the next couple of weeks. The troublesome greens are going okay but they are just a bit behind the other greens. The reason they are not doing as well as the rest of the greens is, they just don t have as good a grass coverage coming out of winter as all the other greens. We have given the greens two follow up light topdressings after renovations. The sand is purely to smooth the greens out. Once the greens are at the stage where we are happy with them, we won t dust them again this growing season. The sand on the greens does not make the greens firm. Our constant rolling and thinning of the thatch are the reasons why the greens are firm. As I have stated a few times, firm greens equals smooth true roll. The rain, warmth and grass growth has kept us very busy lately. Throw in greens renovations and digging a new dam to make things even more hectic. The dam construction is finished but we still have a few jobs to do to clean up after the work. There is more turf to be laid and mulch to be spread as well as repairing the concrete path in the rough on the 7 th fairway. The new nursery will be planted in the next two weeks and repairs to one side of the burn on the 4 th will be done after that. A couple of weeks ago we laid 500 square metres of turf on the 7 th and 8 th fairways and put a call out for some volunteers to help. I think we ended up with at least 8 helpers who worked hard which saw the turf laid in record time. Thanks to all who showed up and helped. Wayne Anderson 3
MENS MATCH REPORT With all ambrose rules, the drive you take, that person can mark his drive for the others to hit their shot first and within one club length. On the putting green, it is only a card length, there is no order as to who putts first so it should be the same for drives. Often when a tree gets in the road of your shot they tend deflect off them and onto other fairways, please leave them where they lay as the person that hit it might just be leaving the tee. If you are that desperate for picking up golf balls that are not yours, go back after dark and with a torch, any you find are yours. Russell Michael Men s Captain All new work around the new dam is GUR. The ground staff have installed the hazard pegs and unfortunately if your errant golf ball finds the water, it is a penalty now, making sure when you take your penalty drop it is close to where the ball entered the water and no nearer the hole. Score cards are printed for the days competition at 5.30am for the morning field and 9am for the afternoon field. If you are unable to attend, could you please take yourself out of the competition before these times for Tom to adjust the field for all to enjoy. Below is a list of the Medal of Medal and Mid Monthly Medal Winners from throughout the year. The Monthly Medal will be played on Saturday 1st December and the Mid Monthly Medal will be played on Wednesday 12thDecember, good luck to all. On the next page is a list of the Monthly Medal and Mid Monthly Medal Winners from throughout the year. The December Monthly Medal and Medal of Medals will be played on Saturday 1st December and the Mid Monthly Medal and Mid Monthly Medal of Medals played on Wednesday 12th December, good luck to all. As this is the last match report for 2018, I would like to wish all the members and staff a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. 6 LADIES MATCH REPORT From the Match Meeting November: Championships, Monthly Medal & President s Trophy will be played from the green tees. Competitions will only be called off in the event Motorised Carts are not allowed or the course is closed. In the event of reduced fields on wet weather days trophies, including Monthly Medal & ball rundown will be adjusted according to the numbers in the field (as is currently the case). A decision on how Sponsored Trophies, both internal and external, are awarded on reduced field days will be made by the match committee in consultation with the sponsor involved. A monthly medal will not be awarded for fields of less than 30, mid- week and less than 5 Saturday. Lee Boyle Ladies Captain Nearest the Pin: To avoid confusion, the Pro Pin holes will be rotated through the Par 3 s and all the Club NTP s will be on Par 4 s & 5 s. Hopefully that will help players remember which pin they are playing for. Please do not put your name on the Pro Pin if you have not paid your money. Currently I am preparing the fixtures for I am mindful of producing a program with a variety of formats to suit the time of year but also making sure the important events are given their rightful place. I plan to introduce a Texan Fourball to the 2019 fixtures. This is a team game for four players. How to play this game and score the card will be in the Red Folder in the ladies locker room. The Red Folder will be updated and give an overview of ladies events, how games are played & scored as well as the Terms of Competition for the various Honour Board Events. Whilst the Terms of Competition are work in progress, these will be added before the events take place. General information will be in place before the beginning of the season on the 31 st January. Sponsors. Thank you to all those members and businesses who have supported the ladies competition by donating gift cards or services for our winners throughout the year. For ladies reading this who have donated in 2018, please advise me if you will not be donating in If you sponsor as part of a group for a particular event, then please let me know. As I work through the fixture book, I am looking to acknowledge and set each sponsor or group of sponsors with its respective event in the fixture book. I would like it to be accurate as possible by the time it goes to print. Rules: The new rules of golf commence on the January 1. Please familiarise yourself with these new rules. There is so much information on the Golf Australia website that there is no excuse for not being informed. There is an App which can be downloaded to your tablet or phone. This makes the rules very accessible & easily understood. On the 29 th November Sue Hanley (rules accredited) will give an information session on covering an overview of the new rules at Presentation. Gala Day on the 25 th November will be played using the new rules. Many rules have changed numbers and the scorecards will be updated to reflect this. 6
LADIES MATCH REPORT Our new member program is continuing to be a success. Some of our new ladies have been benefitted from clinics held by our professional team. This is reflected in greater participation in the various club competitions and improving consistency and we all know that the better we play the more we enjoy the game. Thank you to Joyce Penman, Dell Hughes and Jan Moon as well as all those ladies who have given their time to support this initiative. The weather is warming up. Please take extra care during the heat. Drink plenty of cool water and don t overexert yourself, be kind to yourself & take a cart. Leave the hard core exercising to dawn or dusk. A huge Thank you to our sponsors for the month. Please support those who support us. Lee Boyle Ladies Captain The middle of October saw our greens renovation take place over a week due to adverse weather conditions, with our game on the 18 th October shortened to 9 Holes to allow work to be completed. Meg Peel, Joy Host and Elva Barnes teamed up as sponsors of a 3 Ball Ambrose to raise money for Dove Cottage, the Palliative Care facility at Caloundra. This day was supported by Bardo s Op Shop who had a pop up shop on site and a van to collect donations. Our Pro, Tom Arnott assisted on the day by hitting a Tee shot on the 14 th for a donation. Fashion from Bardo s was paraded by some of our members and together with a generous donation from Lorraine Reeves a total of $ was raised. The money raised was sufficient to purchase a Dishwasher and coffee mugs for the lounge at Dove House. I had the privilege of a tour of the facility and the opportunity to present the Cheque to management. Thursday the 1 st November saw us play a single stroke event with Medal of Medals in conjunction. Thank you to Judith Keill who provided the trophy for the Best Nett on the day which was won by Liz Donaldson and to Maree Campbell and Barb Zorgdrager for the trophies won by Colleen McDowall & Maggie Regan. 7
LADIES MATCH REPORT The next week saw us hold Melbourne Cup day, as a Melbourne girl it is a much loved institution and 68 of us played a 4BBB Stableford sponsored by Blue Orchid Thai Restaurant and Pinnells Gourmet Meats. Thank you to both Brad Tabke and Steve Melrose. The day was won by Glenda & Dick Kamen. This is a wonderful day and my thanks go to Jason (Bar) & Mandy who ran the sweeps and to Simone for the lovely food. A winning day whether or not you won the sweep. Lee Boyle Ladies Captain We welcomed Linda Delmotte, managing director of Your Home Care on Thursday the 8 th November for International day, the day we appreciate diversity in our community. This day was n Irish Stableford and the winners were Jillian Greeves, Sandra Prein, Kate Setchell and Maree Sutton, well done ladies. Brad Tabke of Pinnells Gourmet Meats & Steve Melrose of Blue Orchid Thai Restaurant once again combined to provide the trophies for the Ladies Invitation to the Men s vets on Tuesday the 13 th November. A field of 92 men & women hit off in a shotgun start and played a 4 Ball Alliance, best of 3 scores to count. There was also the newly introduced perpetual trophy to play for but I reckon the Vets committee had a word with Wayne and despite trying to find a means to claim the trophy it went to the Vets fair & square. Next year we will win it back. The winners of the day were Pierce Braggs, Susan Lowrie Joy Host & Judith Baker. Congratulations. The 15 th November saw us play a single stroke and our sponsors were Margaret Elkes, Verna Burns, Jillian Greeves & Lesley Doyle, thank you ladies. There were some wonderful scores on the day and the winners were Barb Zorgdrager, Gae Howell and Merle Rowe. 15 VETERANS VOICE From all Vets a merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year to all Caloundra golfers and staff. Thanks to those vets who took the trouble to attend their AGM. It was the usual action packed entertainment package resulting in a new committee emerging to carry us through the coming year. I don t think a lot of vets realise just how much work goes on behind the scenes to allow them to enjoy their weekly Vets game, host days and away games. I hesitate to compare any of them with the beauty and grace of a swimming swan - more than hesitate actually - but a swan s smooth passage is only achieved by all that paddling under water if you get my drift. John Fengler, who has worked tirelessly on committee for 11 years, many of them as President, was showered with thanks and made a Life Member. Our new President, Paul Balkin, thought it appropriate to introduce the new executive to members after a brief message. A Brief Note from your President Thankful for the opportunity to lead the club into the coming year. AGM attended by 36 people with a variety of issues raised which the committee will work through and report back to members. Have a busy couple weeks ahead but, by working together, we will make them happen with little fuss and a positive outcome. No fighting while I am away and have a great and productive meeting. 15

VETERANS VOICE Treasurer Les Heywood I am the Caloundra Veterans Golf Club Treasurer for my second year. I also look after memberships and shirt orders. I am 69 years old and I am married to Vicki. I have been playing golf for about 20 years and have been a member of Caloundra Golf Club for 7 years. Andrew Moran Secretary Currently between careers. Sometime correspondent on the Sunshine Coast Daily Been here 12 years, came from Canberra. Attempted careers as racing driver, veterans AFL player, and other things and showed a similar lack of ability in them as on golf course. Married to Veronica for 43 years. Editor s Note:- The Secretary on any committee does most of the work so whenever he is photographed he s always flat out. Other members on Committee are Jeff Griffin, Vice President, Ron Beattie, Vice Captain, and Committee members John Massie, John McPherson, Ian Sharman and Richard McKenzie. I regret space does not permit showing their handsome features in this issue. Something to look forward to?? Norm Smith Trophy Well, the year has almost gone. The 16th is a four ball Ambrose so will not count towards the N.S.T.. The 23rd is a host day and a single stableford so that s a counter. The 30th is stroke so a non counter, which leaves the 7th the only other day you can influence the result for the year. Ray Harvey is probably preparing his acceptance speech but the result is still open and there are some talented golfers close behind him all capable of spectacular rounds. This is the last newsletter for 2018 so you won t know the result until our Gala Day on the 14th December. 17

VETERANS VOICE Ladies Invitation Day Tuesday 13th gave us the chance to join the ladies in a strange team game whose name I forget. Essentially we all played a Stableford and the computer took the sum of the best three results from each four. We blokes had a very pleasant time free from bad language and temperament and the field moved at a great pace. On the day, the men just pipped the ladies but it was a close thing. We all enjoyed excellent sandwiches and chips supplied from our club kitchen. Results of the days competition were as follows. 1. PIERCE BRAGG & SUSAN LOWRIE & JOY HOST & JUDITH BAKER Pinnells Gourmet Sponsored Prize 2. JOHN FENGLER & PETER RYAN & PAMELA GORMLEY & YOKA FENGLER 117 $ IAN BLACK & DEBRA FLANNERY & DOUG FLANNERY & SUE BARTLETT 116 C/B $14.00 Old Scribbler 19
