Dear members It s approaching 12 months since I first visited Envie Gof Cub, a cub I had heard so much about but never visited. Now 8 months into working at Envie I have a much cearer picture of both the position we are actuay in agronomicay and how much better we can become. It s now about trying to get us there, after a bit of a baptism of fire with The British Girs, a efforts were reay focused on making the Highgate pay as we as possibe for some of the best young gofers in the word with many short term fixes just to get us through. Since then we have been abe to focus more of our efforts on improving things ong term. We have a wonderfu site with two stunning gof courses which in my opinion can and wi ony get better, without doubt conditions on a surfaces can improve and combining this with tree and heather management over the next 5 years wi ony enhance what we have aready and improve your gofing experience. The many positives incude a tremendous work force that you shoud a be proud of and a site that 90% of it drains superby we. Two great ayouts that are enjoyabe but a chaenge at the same time. Widife is in abundance (a itte too much for my iking) and the practice faciities are superb some of the best in the Midands if not country. The potentia for Envie Gof Cub to get better is huge and we have reay ony just begun to scratch the surface and your support wi be very important. Detaied in this report are some of the key areas we are ooking to improve on. Andy Wood Course Manager Greens Work began prior to my arriva and reay ony started to take effect in June, over the ast 8 months the team have worked hard to get good grass coverage back and this has continued throughout the winter. We have aready hoow cored once this year at a depth of 9 inches this was foowed up by appying 60 tonnes of sand to the greens (120 tonnes) tota. This wi be foowed by 7-inch hoow tines, starting next week and then a fina 5-inch hoow coring at the end of March. Firsty, these jobs are very abour intensive and hard work so if I didn t fee we had to do it, we woudn t be. In short, it s about Hoow Coring Jan 2018 reducing the organic materia, to assist with drainage, and to make the greens firmer for onger periods of time, aowing us to keep surfaces at an optimum for onger. The varying depths of work wi mean we do not create a hard pan by aerating at the same depth constanty, sand wi get down to these mixed depths and this wi aso hep prevent root break. Once work has been competed in March our intentions wi be to get a surface ready for the season as quicky as possibe through ight topdressings unti I am happy with surface eves which if the weather pays ba wi be mid- Apri. The greens shoud then continue to improve throughout the spring/summer with very ight topdressings to maintain surface eves. Aeration wi then again be carried out in August with recovery much quicker than during the winter months. After this I hope the greens wi continue to perform we again through unti mid-january next year when the work wi start again. The exception to this rue maybe a number of greens that require further work to hopefuy prevent major workings in the future, these are: 11th, 15th Highgate, 10th, 11th Lodge. I have a good understanding why these greens performed bady and wi continue to evauate them over the coming months. The practice greens wi aso require extra work if I am going to get them to the standard of the greens out on the course. We wi ook at overseeding with bent grasses once I am happy with organic matter content eves, but for now we wi manage what we have in the sward.
Green Surrounds & Approaches Finding out on my arriva that the irrigation system had been condemned back in 2012 meant that we have had to do severa things to proong its ife further unti it coud be repaced. One of those things was to reduce the amount of time the system was on but aso reduce the amounts of water it was using, we reduced the arcs of the sprinkers, so they no onger hit many of the green surrounds and just focused on the greens. In turn we raised the heights of the cutting units to protect the grass but to aso give us more chance of getting grass to grow in areas that had been destroyed by trying to cut too short on ground that just wasn t suitabe for doing so. We aso changed the mowers we used, using a smaer and ighter machine combined with reducing the amounts of short grass around the green. These areas are not set in stone and once we have a reiabe irrigation system again then the height of cut and widths may change again. This is sti very much work in progress and we sti have to get a stronger sward in many off green areas. We spent a ot of time ast summer getting these areas to an acceptabe standard and we were gad when the rain finay arrived in Juy to hep with germination, hopefuy this year we won t quite have to be as drastic with our work. Other probems aso incude wak on wak off areas and path edges, some of this is just genera wear and tear and some of it has been created by the reduced amount of exit points. For now, we wi just be working on strengthening these areas and getting grass back were possibe, it wi be a much onger term task to rectify the pinch points. Mounding My first impression when I waked onto the gof course was to be greeted by mounds fu of weeds, nettes and dense grass on the back of 18. This continued on many of the new hoes as I waked around the course. I understand the vision, but the reaity has not matched it. We didn t have much choice at the time other than to cut these areas down and remove the cippings. The decision as to what to do with these areas was made easier for us by the R&A who insisted that they were too punishing. We have the same probems on much of the new bunker mounding, so we have aso cut these down removing the cippings to prevent any further buid-up of grass density. We wi do some trias with Rescue, however as the majority of the grass is fescue it wi have itte effect so cutting and coecting wi continue to be our ony option in the short term combined with weed kiing. Fairways On the Highgate we changed the mower we were using to two ightweight machines that were previousy being used to cut green surrounds, this enabed us to coect our grass cippings aiding presentation but aso reducing the amount of nutrient that went back into the soi and decreasing the chance of organic matter buid up. We aso changed some of the fairway shapes. Thankfuy the rains came in Juy which meant a the Tees Many of the tees at the eary part of ast summer were very weak. We wi continue with trying to strengthen the sward on a tees this wi incude overseeding with new cutivars of grass, aeration, topdressing and fertiising. Any sma uneven areas of the Tee wi be eveed by hand, keeping costs down. Any major work on tees wi not be carried out in the short term. Bunkers Many hours have been spent trying to get the bunkers at Envie in reasonabe order, from stone picking to adding or moving around sand, bunkers are raked reguary and maintenance work is constant. We sti can do more however and hopefuy this year with ess demands on bare areas, bunkers are something we can continue to work on. The reaity is however unti they are constructed with a iner and drainage is instaed to the bunkers propery then we wi ony achieve a C+ grade at best. Construction and redesign wi not be ooked at over the next few years. Lodge 8th Last Year work that had been done to try and get surfaces back was successfu. If the rain had not come for sustained periods, then the work woud have been much ess ikey to succeed. The ony probem was that it didn t seem to want to stop for the rest of the summer. The Lodge fairways had different work carried out on them with us targeting specific patches of fairway that remained weak from past construction work. This invoved seeding, topdressing humus over the fairway and fertiising foowed by praying for rain. It has worked very we and with another year s work on them it shoud mean that they get to a eve of the other fairways on the Lodge. We wi aso be changing the shape of some of the Lodge fairways this year and introducing a Semi Rough Band around the fairways ike we have now got on the Highgate.
Envie Gof Cub Heather Restoration - Highgate front 9 As part of our on-going commitment to the restoration of the heather on our heathand courses we sha shorty by undertaking an initia programme of turf stripping and scarifying on the front-nine of Highgate. What does this mean? We have carefuy reviewed areas on this part of the course aided with historica aeria photos to determine where we fee there is the best opportunity to reinstate heather on the course. Heather seed wi remain viabe for germination within the upper ayers of humus for up to 60 years, however this can ony occur if the overying ayer of grass, thatch buid-up and moss are removed to expose the seed to sunight. In order to do this we wi use either of the two methods outined beow Turf Stripping Scarifying As the name impies, we wi carefuy strip away rank grasses in order to expose the seed bank within the humus ayer underneath. This is quite an invasive process and wi eave arge areas of soi exposed. Whist these are not necessariy attractive to ook at, they wi provide environmentay important bare ground areas used by rare Hymenoptera (soitary mining bees and ants) as we as common izards, grass snakes and sow worms. This method graduay removes thatch and moss buid-up in the existing grass sward to expose the underying humus ayer and is idea to use on those areas more ikey to be in pay e.g. aongside semi-roughs and adjacent to existing pathways. This process wi be repeated each spring and ate summer. What can we expect? Initiay, not much. Germination of heather seed can take up to 3 years, however there are instances throughout the course where turf has previousy been ifted for construction projects that have seen germination occur at the donor site within as itte as 12 to 18 months. Where necessary we may ighty overseed arger areas with a fescue nurse grass mix that wi hep to protect the seedings but aso hep to reduce potentia soi erosion. Once estabished, these pioneer stage pants wi transition into the buiding stage of deveopment that we can then manage on a 3 to 5 yeary rotationa cutting programme. This initia phase of turf stripping and scarifying forms part of a ong term heathand management programme aimed at restoring and regenerating heather throughout Highgate and Lodge, aowing us to effectuay maintain our heathand heritage.
Tree & Heather Management As I am sure most of you are aware this is where we have been concentrating our efforts over the winter and is something that we wi be continuing with for the next four winters at east. It is hugey abour intensive however it wi be we worth it in the end. It has been great for the team when members have passed comment when paying about how good it ooks. Hundreds of stumps from previous workings have aso been removed which shoud make ife safer for everyone. We have mainy concentrated on the front 9 Highgate however we have aso tacked areas such as the 14th Highgate and 18th Lodge. Athough soi stripping for heather regeneration has not begun yet, we wi be Highgate 14th soon. Pease be aware that these areas once stripped wi take severa years to come back through as mature heather pants and wi need protection from vehice and foot traffic. Drainage We have severa issues with drainage around both courses, unfortunatey in the main on recenty constructed areas, key areas incude the 11th Highgate and Lodge but aso incudes 15th Highgate and 3rd Lodge. Practice Faciities We wi continue to work hard to get the conditions of the greens as near to those out on the gof courses, athough we may use the three chipping greens to evauate different cutivars of bent grass to see which one I want to take out onto the course. Like four of the greens out on the course the chipping greens wi have to be worked on much more than others to increase depth of root zone and improve paying characteristics. The tees and green surrounds we wi continue to be worked on improving eves, grass composition, trying to keep course ike conditions. The sma turf nursery wi aso be worked on to give us a better quaity of turf for using out on the course for sma projects. Highgate 7th green We have aready done a temporary fix on the 11th Highgate and are part way through doing the same on the 11th Lodge, unfortunatey to do a proper job wi mean finance and time we do not have at present. We have aready mentioned the greens that drain poory, hopefuy these wi improve with the work we are carrying out, if not then drainage wi aso have to be ooked at on these areas as we. We ALL have a duty to be respectfu of other gofers & maintain standards. We MUST - RAKE BUNKERS, REPAIR PITCH MARKS & REPLACE DIVOTS. Be vigiant, show respect for the course and eave it as you woud ike to find it. IN LINE WITH THE ENVILLE VOICE SURVEY A ZERO-TOLERANCE POLICY WILL NOW BE ADOPTED. Staff The team have been fantastic from day one, Envie are very ucky to have a group of staff who have come through some difficut times but are sti very much dedicated to the cause. They have a weath of experience and are passionate about making Envie the best it can possiby be, this was proved over The Girs British Open Amateur Championship with many going above and beyond, putting doube shifts in to get the course where we wanted it to be. We are investing in our team with George and Reece beginning their Leve 3 s with Myerscough Coege. We wi aso hopefuy be taking on two apprentices in the spring, training them to Leve 2, if you know of anyone who is interested in a career in greenkeeping pease ask them to send a C.V. into the cub. Our ast apprentice unfortunatey didn t make it through the winter, so with us aso taking on the gardening duties this year it has freed up enough funds to try and take on two peope as trainees. Last week Chris our new mechanic started, he wi prove a huge asset to the cub and is aready going about his roe in a professiona manner; unfortunatey Mark our previous mechanic had to eave to become a fu-time carer for his wife.
Maintenance Faciity Hopefuy in the next coupe of weeks we wi find out if we have got panning permission for the extension of the maintenance faciity. The aim is to remove the temporary shipping containers that are not fit for purpose and have been targeted by thieves recenty. The new buiding wi house the majority of the cutting equipment in a ayout that is conducive to efficient and safe working practices. No onger wi we have to move 8 machines out of the way to get to the one we want, pre-start checks and setting up of machines wi not have to be done ying on wet ground and we won t be spending vauabe minutes trying to squeeze machines back into where they have come from. From a security point of view a drivabe machinery we be stored inside and over the coming years we wi begin to buid a secure compound with new security fencing, to make it more difficut for thieves to break in. Leo wi aso be making an appearance soon which wi ony hep keep unwanted guests away. Machinery We have aready made some shrewd purchases and got the best prices possibe for machinery that no onger serves a purpose. The pan is ong term but some of the acquisitions have made a difference aready incuding our new grinders to keep bades as sharp as possibe, keeping a maintenance in house. We have acquired a new tractor mounted bower and eaf coector which shoud make a big difference over the coming years and a new aerator which has been doing and wi continue to core the greens over the coming months. We have aso bought a second-hand stump grinder which has been a great asset and has probaby paid for itsef aready against hire costs. Irrigation The current irrigation system was reported on, in October The S.T.R.I undertook the audit and these are some of the key points - originay instaed in 1980 s and more recent work undertaken in mid 1990 s. Underying probems Limitation on water storage during dry periods - current capacity 96m 3. Condition of water storage vesses - one is over 30 years od and eaking the other is 15 years od. Voume required to irrigate Tees Greens & Approaches is recommended at 320m 3 per day - we can ony access 168m 3 during over an 8 eight-hour night time watering programme - (96m 3 stored pus 72m 3 extracted during an eight-hour programme). Condition of pump house and operation of singe phase pumping pant - buit mid 80 s, asbestos roof - hoes in infrastructure for vermin to gain access, water on foor from eaks and iabe to frost damage. Age of upvc main ine pipe work (30-35 years) connected to newer PE pipework - average ifespan of upvc pipework years. Poor sprinker coverage on some tees & greens, sprinkers not throwing head to head and infexibe not aowing individua head contro. These issues have ony got worse since 2012, with constant repair work and worse ast year when the bore hoe pump broke, uckiy this occurred during a week of rain if it had happened either side of that week our greens woud quite simpy have been dead. The bore hoe pump is ony one piece of a very arge jigsaw and at any point one of these pieces coud go down and we wi be in a position of having to expain to our membership why we have dead greens. Bare areas wi be invaded by poa annua species Current Water Suppy Borehoe Licence expires March This wi then be reviewed studying water usage records, so responsibe use is very important. We can use 200m 3 per day or 18,225m 3 per year. Poor coverage of sprinker heads areas with no coverage
The need for irrigation - To maintain a high-quaity gof course It is an essentia maintenance too to sustain idea soi moisture conditions. Even coverage & distribution required with the need for fexibiity to irrigate individua areas. Essentia component for photosynthesis aong with oxygen. Absorption & movement of nutrients within the pant - Acts as a cooing agent by reguating temperature. Maintains eaves in a turgid state - Around 35mm ost through evapo-transpiration in a dry week. Forms around 85% of the growing tissue of the pant. Chemicas ike wetting agents, weed kiers, fertiisers etc. need to be watered in after appication irrigation takes away the uncertainty of changing weather patterns. Quite simpy on a gof course irrigation means ife or death. Principes - Suppy sufficient water deepy to the fu depth of rooting. Irrigate infrequenty but deepy without causing undue stress to the turf. Ensure that water is appied eveny and enters the soi & not washed from the surface as run off. Without a reiabe irrigation system, we won t have a gof course fit for pay and a decining membership. Irrigation is aso important and necessary when governing bodies such as Engand Gof and the R&A ook to Cub s to host tournaments, which in turn hep to raise the profie of the Cub. Did you know that a Open Championship venues MUST have fairway irrigation instaed to be considered, despite the fact they don t appear to use it? Being responsibe we have engaged the services of an irrigation consutant - Roger Davey of Irritech - Europe s argest independent irrigation consutants. Tenders have aready been submitted by six contractors. Our next step is to interview these contractors, to ascertain their capabiities and aso invite more detaied fina prices, this wi take pace in the next week. When the fina tenders have been submitted, a meeting wi be caed for a the membership to attend at Wombourne Civic Centre, this is where The Board wi present a pan as to what is necessary for the future and we being of the gof cub. The current Greens Notice board is due to be re ocated shorty, into the main entrance opposite the disabed toiet. This wi provide greater access to course information for a members. I try and put weeky information out on Twitter and Facebook so if you woud ike to keep in contact my accounts are:- Twitter & Facebook - Andrew Wood (Envie Gof Cub) Pease remember if you have any observations, suggestions or compaints use the correct channes of communication:- write in :- Envie Gof Cub, Highgate Common, Envie, Stourbridge DY7 5BN emai manager@enviegofcub.co.uk or pete.beaman@enviegofcub.co.uk (greens) or Suggestion book in the foyer It is important a Heath and Safety issues are reported directy and as soon as possibe.
