Rules Quiz 18 Hole Quiz Level: Moderate Question 1 of 18 An overflow of water from a pond is casual water. Question 2 of 18 It is permitted to agree to omit two holes and settle a match over 16 holes. Question 3 of 18 It is a moderately windy day and the player's ball lies on the putting green. The player approaches his ball, cautiously takes his stance and grounds his club behind his ball. There is a sudden strong gust of wind and the ball then moves. The player is penalised one stroke and must replace his ball. Question 4 of 18 Standing on a branch to prevent it interfering with the backswing or stroke is considered to be "fairly taking a stance" and is acceptable.
Question 5 of 18 A player is deemed to have made a stroke if he starts his downswing and his clubhead is stopped by a branch of a tree. Question 6 of 18 A club may be used to search for a ball that is believed to be covered by sand in a bunker. Question 7 of 18 A player may use a rangefinder to establish how far he has to the hole. Question 8 of 18 A player is penalised for practising putting with another player's putter between the play of two holes on the putting green of the hole last played. Question 9 of 18 A player must not use any long-handled putter while making a stroke. Question 10 of 18 A player plays a stroke on the putting green but in doing so inadvertently brushes his body with his gripping hand. What is the penalty? A - The player incurs a one stroke penalty. B - The player incurs a one stroke penalty and the ball must be replaced and the stroke replayed. C - There is no penalty.
Question 11 of 18 A player on the putting green addresses his ball. Before playing, a strong gust of wind moves the ball. The player incurs a penalty. Question 12 of 18 In stroke play, a player makes a stroke on the putting green whilst pressing his forearm tight to his body creating an anchor point against his body. What is the ruling? A - The player incurs a one stroke penalty and the ball is played as it lies. B - The player incurs a two stroke penalty and the ball is played as it lies. C - The player incurs a two stroke penalty and the ball must be replaced and the stroke replayed. Question 13 of 18 A player can hold the flagstick with one hand and hole a short putt, using the putter with his other hand. Question 14 of 18 In match play, if a player makes a stroke at a wrong ball, he incurs a penalty of one stroke and must correct the error. Question 15 of 18 A rattlesnake or a bees nest is a "dangerous situation" from which the player is entitled to relief.
Question 16 of 18 A rub of the green occurs when a ball in motion is deflected by the player or his equipment. Question 17 of 18 A club is considered grounded in long grass in a water hazard when the grass is compressed to the point where it will support the weight of the club. Question 18 of 18 For a player to be entitled to embedded ball relief, his ball must be in its own pitch-mark with all of the ball below the level of the ground.
Correct Answers Question 1 Explanation: See Decision 25/2. Question 2 Explanation: The players would be disqualified under Rule 1-3 for excluding the operation of Rule 2-1 by failing to play the stipulated round, provided the players knew that this was a breach of the Rules. Question 3 Explanation: It is highly likely that the wind caused the ball to move and not the player(rule 18-2). There is no penalty and the ball is played as it lies. Question 4 Explanation: See Decision 13-2/1. Question 5 Explanation: A "stroke" is the forward movement of the club made with the intention of striking at and moving the ball. See Decision 14/1. Question 6 Explanation: See Rule 12-1a.
Question 7 Explanation: The player may use a distance measuring device only if there is suitable Local Rule in place authorising their use. Question 8 Explanation: Such practice putting is permitted by Rule 7-2. The borrowing of the putter does not breach Rule 4-4a since the putter was not used to make a stroke that counted in the player's score. Question 9 Explanation: There is no prohibition on the length of a putter (Appendix II). Question 10 Correct answer: C Explanation: The prohibition in Rule 14-1b applies only to a player who intentionally anchors a club, either directly or through use of an anchor point in making a stroke. See Decision 14-1b/6. Question 11 Explanation: The player did not cause the ball to move. There is no penalty and the ball must be played as it lies. See Rule Question 12 Explanation: The player has breached Rule 14-1b, he incurs a penalty of two stroke and the ball must be played as it lies.
Question 13 Explanation: Provided the flagstick has been removed from the hole and the ball therefore does not strike it. If the ball were to strike the flagstick, a breach of Rule 17-3a would occur. See Decision 17-1/5. Question 14 Explanation: In match play, if a player makes a stroke at a wrong ball, he loses the hole. See Rule 15-3a. Question 15 Explanation: See Decision 1-4/10. Question 16 Explanation: A rub of the green occurs when a ball in motion is deflected or stopped by an outside agency. See Definition of Rub of the Green. Question 17 Explanation: See Decision 13-4/8. Question 18 Explanation: A ball is embedded when it is in its own pitch-mark and part of the ball is below the level of the ground.
