2 REEF BREEZES CAPTAIN S CORNER September 14 th 2018 Ph: Fax: office@longreefgolfclub.com.au FROM THE PRESIDENT LRGC has been selected as a finalist for the Metropolitan Golf Club of the Year Award. The announcement of the winner will be made on the 22nd October 2018 at the NSW Golf Industry Awards Night. The other 3 finalists are Manly, Stonecutters Ridge and Cambelltown Golf Clubs. When announcing the 4 finalists, Stuart Fraser, CEO of Golf NSW said " Healthy Clubs make healthy communities. The successful finalists all display a level of commitment to their communities and pride in being a representative of our wonderful game". To be a finalist for NSW Metropolitan Club of the Year is a recognition of the outstanding dedication, commitment and contribution of the Members, staff and all the people associated with LRGC. Stephen Twigg President Good to see a little rain, but need we much more to get through summer. A best round from Perry Yeldham (43pts) was the highlight of the week, and Luke Edgell continues his winning streak. I had the opportunity to play Royal Melbourne in the Australian Hickory Championship this week. The course layout was set up as close to what it was in 1920 but the greens were running at 15 and there was a 50kph northerly very difficult and the consensus was that to break 100 would be a good score. I just achieved this. 1 st Hole New Work The area from the tee to the fairway is one of the first impressions of the course and it is currently being improved to make it even. There will be interruptions to play with the tee markers being placed ahead of the new work in some instance over the next week. Juniors We have entered a team in the Encourage Shield and the following have been selected to represent Long Reef. Mitch Jones, Millie Komulainen, Tyrone Pengelly, Alex Greig, Kalen Kennedy, Natalia Chriss. The team will be managed by Sam Newbrun Noah K tied 4 th in the Primary School qualifier and has been selected in the NSW team. Well done, following Kai last year. It s only the second time brothers have represented. Millie missed out but being the youngest competitor will be a force next year. Rakes in Bunkers Les Browne Captain RULES WITH GEORGE QUESTION: James and John were playing a match. Each of them had a caddie. On the 2nd hole the caddies had taken the bags to the right of the green while the players went back to the tee. James played his tee shot onto the green. John played his tee shot well right and his ball hit his own bag. Which of the following is correct? a. John lost the hole. Quote Thanks to the inconsiderate b****** who left the rake at the edge of the bunker so my ball was just about unplayable. Please put rakes in the CENTRE of the bunker after raking. b. John incurred a two stroke penalty. c. John incurred a one stroke penalty. d. John may immediately cancel his first stroke and play again from the tee without penalty Practice on the Course Our course has very high usage and currently with the drought the whole course is under stress. We have adequate practice facilities to hone one s game, however if you want to have a practice round would you please observe the following conditions; Report to the Pro Shop, who will advise when and where you can access the course. Play from the tees of the day Maximum of two (2) balls to be used. Carry and use a sand bucket for divots. 4 FROM THE WOMEN Sensational scoring from some of our women members this week. It is immensely gratifying to see the women who joined the club within the last 12 months finally see all their hard work paying off. Well done all of you and hope you keep it happening. Thank you to those who have supported these newer members throughout the year. It was lovely to see so many of the Long Reef Women Members at the memorial service for Tibby Playfair on Monday. A fine and fitting tribute was offered by both Sandra Mellowes and Sandra Gillies on behalf of the women. We all acknowledge the dedication and kindness shown by Helen Kook to Tibby during her ill-health. Our clever team who represented at the Bronze Medallion last week should be well pleased with their 5 th placing. Congratulations in particular to Gay McCorby who recorded the best score on the Manly course. Our representatives at Monday week s Coronation Medal will be Natalie Driver and Catherine Gould at Pymble Golf Club and Marg O Connell and Alison Gattas at Asquith Golf Club. We hope for more fine golf from these players. The Charity day in aid of Bringa will take place on September 27 th. We have approximately 120 women ready to play golf, have fun and raise some money. The fund-raising team of Di Muncke, Jill Hensman and Dani Montgomery in conjunction with our President Marg O Connell have organised a wonderful collection of Raffle Prizes and Silent Auction items. Information Sheets detailing these prizes have been posted in the Locker Room and Kiosk area. Tickets will be on sale on Tuesdays and Thursdays from any Committee member. Thank you to those who have paid their $25 per person for the day. Please pay at reception and note your receipt number on the sheet provided in the Locker Room as soon as is possible. The draw will be done next week. The game format will be posted on the notice board this week. Thank you to the Bridge ladies for their continued support to the new players learning. Rookies Rookies are playing some great golf at present. As such we have some of them joining us for the Charity Day on September 27 th. 6 THE ARCHIVES W.A. Hudson served as President of the Club for 13 years, 1927 to 1940, following 5 years as Vice- President. He presided over the Club in those early years and was involved in the course extension to 18 holes. The Hudson Shield, named after him, remains to this day. He was made a Life Member in Results of competition 7 th September Division 1: (1-19) 1 st Laurie McCourt (12) 38pts 2 nd Jim Ridding (18) 35 cb Division 2: (20-27) 1 st Bob Hansor (24) 35 cb 2 nd Allen Evans (27) 35 pts Division 3 (>27) 1 st Di Kirby (28) 34 pts 2 nd Sue Smiles (28) 30pts NTP Div 1 Nil Div 2 Nil Div 3 Nil Balls to 36cb Captain V.S. Slocombe looks a much happier man. He was a dentist with a practice in the city. He joined the Committee in 1930 and two years later was made Captain. He remained as Captain for the next 13 years, taking the Club through the worrying war years. He was made a Life Member in He and W.A. Hudson above are by far the longest serving Captain and President, both for 13 years, at the time when there was no limit to the term of office. Sandra Mellowes Long Reef v Forster/Tuncurry Long Reef members took the 3 and a bit hour drive up the Pacific Hwy to Forster for the weekend of golf and the annual Forster/Tuncurry vs Long Reef Challenge. It was certainly a challenge for some of us. On Saturday we played in the Members Comp from the back tees at the tough Tuncurry Golf Course with best away score for Long Reef with 35 pts from Janet Atchison. Sunday was the day we all needed to play well and hit that little white ball straight. Les Browne and Sascha Plate were the best with 35pts each for Long Reef with Sascha beating Les on a countback. Sascha was the only winner for the away team with Les squaring his match against their President who finished with a net birdie and net eagle. Best Scores for the hosts came from ex-president Dougie Holmes with 39 pts on a countback from ex Long Reef Member, Wayne Picknell. First timers for this event for Long Reef were Janet Atchison and Monica Raidy for the ladies, with Sascha Plate, Kurt Raidy and Brad Jan for the men. The hospitality from our hosts as usual was fantastic with a dinner organised on the Saturday night at the Forster Golf Club. We all managed to stay reasonably sober so we have no excuses for the Challenge Shield residing for the next 12 months up in Forster town. The next annual Forster/Tuncurry vs Long Reef Challenge will be back on home soil at Long Reef next year in either August or September Peter Frith
7 Welfare Notes: Members will be concerned to learn that former Member John Lockhart has been hospitalised following a setback in his health and our thoughts and best wishes are with John and wife Judy at this time. Meanwhile, Lilith Gollan is now recuperating after her recent health issue and it was great to see her back at the Club recently. Brian Cummins OH DEAR! Tragedy on the 5 th hole Welfare Coordinator. You know it s not your day when your electric buggy follows your ball into the drink on the 5 th hole. Geoff Osborne was a trooper though, soldiering on with sodden gear, making some good putts and winning the coffees. FROM THE JUNIORS Last Friday Kai Komulainen and Mitchell Jones competed in the Broken Bay Catholic Schools Golf Invitational at Shelley Beach GC. Kai won the U13 stroke and the overall day with a score of 75! Mitch won the nett event with a great round and nett 66. Well done Kai and Mitch! This Week Noah and Millie Komulainen are competing in the NSWPSSA Primary Schools Golf Championships. Noah had 79 gross in round one (68nett) to be third overall while Millie didn t have the best of rounds. The top 8 boys and top 4 girls are selected into the NSW PSSA State Team. We wish them all the best for the remainder of the tournament. Holiday Camps Don t miss your opportunity to book your kids/grandkids in our School Holiday camps. Tuesday 2 nd October Monday 8 th October 9am-3pm. Thursday 11 th October Bookings at the office! FROM THE PRO SHOP With a mobile phone and rangefinder in his bag, it was an expensive round however. RULES WITH GEORGE ANSWER: c is correct. If a player's ball is accidentally deflected or stopped by himself, his partner or either of their caddies or equipment, the player incurs a penalty of one stroke (Rule 19-2). This applies in both match play and stroke play. As many players will recall, prior to 2008, if a player's ball struck himself, his partner or either of their caddies or equipment the penalty was loss of hole in match play and two strokes in stroke play. PRO SHOP NEWS: The proshop has seen a big re-vamp this week with the putting green moved into the centre of the proshop floor. Over the coming weeks we will be putting in a golf simulator, full details to come, watch this space! NEW ARRIVALS Puma Shoes Only $79 Adidas AdiPower Shoes Just $129!
