Martin & Michelle Neath Last year's winning team of Ian Threadgold, Jim Staunton, Richard Adcock and Andy Chinn were 7 desperate to retain their title in this, the second running of the Martin Neath Memorial Event, but it was not to be a repeat performance! The weather Gods were kind for the second year running as sixty players making up fifteen four player teams took to the tees to contest the event and to raise money for charity. Playing a better ball stableford format with the best two scores in each team counting towards the overall team score and with players wearing pink for this special day the sixty went out in good spirit, hungry for glory and in anticipation of some great après-golf BBQ food. The event generated some exciting golf and the first team out brought in a score that looked to be a winning one and indeed topped the leader board for most of the morning and was only equalled by a team that were much later starters; it was the Team of Bob Wood, Dave Bradley, Neil Harrison and Geoff Edge that returned that tied score, a very respectable 93 points, which snatched victory at the eleventh hour on countback. The victorious boys carded (best 2 scores per hole) one 7 point, seven 6 points, just one 3 point and the remainder, 4 or 5 point holes to snatch the win with their excellent back nine score of 45 points. Relegated down to second place was the team comprising Jamie Newton, Mark Purser, Ade Day and John Griffiths who, although setting the early standard, could only amass 41 points on the back nine which, after holding a tremendous 52 points at the turn, was a little disappointing and costly. Having managed to card seven 6 point holes and and one 8 point hole (only one other team managed an 8 pointer!) they came to grief on the back nine when they could only tally 3 points on each of holes thirteen and fourteen which proved to be the turning point for the early pace-setters. Coming in in third place was team Barrie Hope, Steve Baylis, Richard
8 Higgs and Mark Keeling who together brought home 90 points just 1 point ahead of the fourth placed team of Duane Parsons, Ben Parsons, Andy Turner and Joe Jackson. Both third and fourth placed teams started well but faltered on the back, more wind affected, nine holes. A Few Timely Reminders Folks No Show Up, Still Pay Up... Please don't forget that if you are booked into a competition but fail to show up without a valid excuse you will still be charged your competition entry fee as per : Section 7 of Guide : R&PPGC Competition...By booking in to a competition players are committing to paying the entry fee. If included in the draw players will still be liable to pay the fee even if they fail to show up on the day. However if extenuating circumstances exist for not participating, then the fee will be waived... (top l to r) Bob Wood, Dave Bradley (Bot l to r) Neil Harrison, Geoff Edge - Winners Martin Neath Memorial Open There were also two on-course competitions staged; longest drive on the eleventh which was won (by some distance) by the monster drive of Richard Higgs with John Griffiths taking the win for closest to the pin on the fifth with a tee shot that later competitors agreed, would have needed an ace to beat it!. The great day was rounded off on the patio with a number of family and friends enjoying a BBQ (courtesy of, and many thanks to, Chef of the day Viv Tinker and her hard working helpers Zachary Tinker and Emily Tinker) and a few refreshing drinks before a raffle for donated prizes (many thanks to the donors). After expenses, the event raised 440 for St Richards Hospice. So, last year's victors couldn't do the unthinkable and had to hand over bragging rights to Team Wood, Bradley, Harrison and Edge but, they can still be proud that their score of 101 points last year remains unbeaten! Starters......The Starter role assists the management of the start sheet ensuring a steady flow of players off the starting tee. To ensure the responsibility is fairly shared across participating players the following process will be in place : Starters for the day will be determined by the position on the start sheet: 1st named in Group 5 1st Starter 1st named in Group 10 2nd Starter 1st named in Group 15 3rd Starter Just In Time... Section 8 of Guide : sanction e.g. suspended from playing in competitions... R&PPGC Competition...On the day of a competition : Players should arrive in good time as they will need to sign in to the competition on the system and pay their entry fee in the pro shop. Players are required to be on the starting tee at least 10 minutes prior to their allotted tee time. If extreme weather is forecast start times may well be disrupted so please get to the club in good time. If you know that you will be unable to make your tee time, players MUST advise the pro shop by telephone at the earliest opportunity to minimise the disruptions that withdrawals cause. Players habitually failing to turn up for their allotted tee time without notifying the club will be subject to 1st named in Group 20 / last group 4th Starter If acting as Starter you will need to be at the club approx 45 minutes before your tee time... And Finally...'Ready Golf'.. Section 9 of Guide : R&PPGC Competition...All competitions will adopt the ready golf approach. This means the golfer who is ready to hit can do so even though they may not be farthest away from the hole, if it is safe to do so... Please Note... The full document, R&PPGC Competition Guide, can be found on the Notice Boards in the Locker Rooms and also, in pdf form, as a download from our main website. Thank You - The Committee Media Matters If everything goes to plan you will be reading this July Newsletter prior to the commencement of the due month and I would like to notify everyone that your Media Centre will be closed over the last two weeks of June and into the first week of July. During said period there will be no updates to our main Website, Facebook or Competition feedback archives. Hopefully, normal service will be resumed immediately following the return of your Editor to his 'office'. 8
9 James Leaver Writes As I write for this month s newsletter, it would seem we have had nasty change in the weather pretty cold and wet! Not the golfing conditions we would all like! I am, however, pleased with the progress made on the greens. Although the spring was late this year, the works we carried out have started to bear fruit. The playing surfaces are looking a lot better and the coverage and quality of grass, I hope you will agree, is excellent. As the condition of the greens have improved, we have been discussing ways to improve the pace. The height of cut has been lowered to 3mm and we will continue to verti-cut. In time, if we can keep the surfaces healthy, we will be able to speed them up a bit! Over the coming weeks other areas of the course will get more attention. We have a full course spraying booked in to kill the clover and other undesirable weeds that encroach onto the playing areas. All in all, however, I think the course is in pretty good shape and our greens keepers should be congratulated. We do have some longer term/larger projects in mind. You will have seen the improvements to the bridge on the 7th. If this holds up well, we will do the other 2 bridges in the same way. We are looking at some drainage work for the wettest areas to help keep the course playable through the winter months. Our biggest, ongoing issue, is the bunkers. We have ordered 2 loads of sand to top them up, however, due to the poor construction, it is literally like throwing money down the drain. When it rains, the new sand mixes with the contaminated sand and quickly turns to a material that sets solid. This is why, it appears there is no sand in the bunkers. In actual fact, if you dig hard, you will see, in most cases there is loads of sand but it has set like concrete. We could pile inches on top, which is what has happened on the Perdiswell side, Know Your Course Answer It's hole 1 9 although this means the sand isn t compact, they are equally impossible to play from. We will be taking a view as to how we can redesign holes and green complexes to make sure all hazards are appropriate and interesting. Unfortunately, the bunker issue is a problem at many courses and is not as simple as just putting in more sand..but we are on it! And will start a program of works to get them right. As some of you may know, Adam, Leo and myself play in a few Pro-Ams through the year. I d like to congratulate Adam on winning the most recent one at Cleobury Mortimer with a fine score of 2 under Par. Well done Ad! We are often looking for playing partners to make up teams, if you would like to get involved please speak to one of us and we can let you know the dates. Happy Golfing! James Leaver
