1 The Scorecard MILE SQUARE PARK - CLASSIC I know that I am going to jinx it by mentioning it, but this is 2 tournaments in a row that the last group of Orco Telco has finished in just over 5 hours. I just want to say as one of the board members that play frequently in the last group. I appreciate the effort the club is making to keep up with the group in front of them. When you keep up it makes the round enjoyable for everybody. The real test will come in September when Ray Johnson joins us again. Just kidding Ray, we have missed you the last 2 tournaments. I will admit that the Classic Course at Mile Square Park is one of my favorite courses. I know it has changed a little on the back when the Players course was built. I thought based on how the course is laid out with the trees bordering every fairway and the length of the course it was going to be a real test to the club. I am not sure if it was playing the white tees that shortened the course or guys in the club have just gotten that good. We had 2 really exceptional rounds. Ben Sahli-Reyes and Marty Cloud destroyed the course. Ben had the round of the day with an 82 winning Low Gross in the VP flight by 4 strokes. His Net 60 won him Low Net in the flight by 7 strokes. He also had Most Greens in the VP flight with 9. The next closest in the flight had 5. This was a truly dominating performance! In the Presidents flight it was much the same, Marty Cloud (Lead Village Idiot and Mr. Gorilla) had the lowest round of the day with a 75 winning Low Gross in the Presidents flight by 3 strokes. His Net 61 easily won the Low Net in the flight by 5 strokes. Unfortunately his 7 greens in regulation put him 2 greens behind the winner of Most Greens in the Presidents flight Steve Roush who hit 9. It may not have been fair to Marty since Steve was playing in the same group as Ben and was drafting off Ben most of the round. Marty did continue his No Hitter on the Long Drive in the Presidents Flight. Marty has not lost a long drive competition since May. August was no different! Marty easily won the Long Drive by crushing a drive right down the middle. I am anxious to see what Marty and Ben s handicap are for the September tournament. Ben say goodbye to the VP Flight. Now on every other month in the VP flight an 86 with a Net 67 and 5 greens would easily win the flight. In August it only was good enough for 2 nd Low Net. That was the story for Jim Lunn. Jim has been playing some really good golf of late and I am sure he thought he had the tournament wrapped up with his consistent play. He just picked the wrong month to have this great round and not win. Jim did get a little revenge by knocking Ben off the Long Drive in the VP Flight. By Jim winning the Long Drive looks like he is ready for a show down between past Gorilla Champions Jim and Marty. A real battle of Village Idiots. Poor John Mehlmauer who posts a Net 68, 4 strokes under par and the best it does for him is bring him 3 rd place Low Net in the VP Flight. John is struggling with the fact that he is a board member now and that all his added responsibilities are supposed to ruin your golf game. I am a poster child for board members and poor play. Come on John you are making me look bad. In the President Flight it was Chuck Young who was the 1 st loser. Chuck posted a very nice Net 66 to take 2 nd place Low Net in the flight. Obviously a Net 66 would have won just about every other month in the Presidents Flight. It was Steve Roush who slipped into the Reyes Slip Stream (an assisting force regarded as drawing something along behind something else) and took 3 rd place Low Net on matched cards with a net 70. I have never seen a 9 handicap so happy to beat a 22 handicap. He put Ben in his place by shooting a 79 to Ben s 82.

2 SIDE POT As you guys know we collect $10 every tournament for our side pot. The board tries to change it up every month to keep it fun. Since we have several new members some of which have not played a lot of golf. We tried to make it fair so everybody has a shot at the side pot. I had no idea that when we decided on last month s side pot (pick 2 guys to bet on) was going to be so confusing. Many of you thought I had described building a jet engine (like I could describe building a jet engine). Evan after explaining several times we are just going to add up the net score of the 2 guys you selected. That combined net score was your score. Still guys kept throwing their score into the mix. I give up! I give the Village Idiots shit all the time but many of you guys make them look like Mensa members. Now there is no doubt that most of you have never heard of Mensa so please look it up! We are going to keep it as simple as possible in September. We are just going to take your net round for the tournament. The person that doesn t understand this side pot has to play their next round with Tom Evans. NEW MEMBERS A big thank-you to all the guys who are helping with our membership drive. In our 1 st 2 months we have added 8 new members. In July we added 4 new members to the club. Actually 2 of the 4 are new and 2 are members who are rejoining after taking years off. I want to welcome the 2 new members that Marty Cloud brought to the club. Robert Moore and Jason McCombie are the 2 newest Village Idiots. Sorry guys I hate to be disparaging on your 1 st tournament but being associated with the Village Idiots gives me no choice. A welcome back to our 2 members rejoining this year goes to Matt Clarke who took a couple years off and Rick Sheldon who took a decade off. Guys keep up the good work, we want to make sure the club stays healthy with as many active members as possible. It appears that the new guys are a great fit. The way I know this is when I leave the bar after the round most of the new guys are still there. They are either waiting for the short bus to pick them up or are just enjoying a few cocktails. I am going to go with the cocktails until I get to know them better. MATCH PLAY Singles match play will begin at our September Tournament. We have decided to enter all the members that have paid dues into the singles bracket. I know many of you did not sign up for singles or do not plan on playing in September. If you can t make it to the September Tournament and have a match scheduled. You have 2 options; 1. You can forfeit your match and your opponent would move on to the next round. 2. Try to schedule a make-up match with your opponent prior to the October Tournament. If you are unable to reschedule due to a schedule conflict by either guy, then you forfeit and your opponent moves on. For you new guys, if you have any questions about how to track your singles match please see a board member and we will be happy to explain. You also may be questioning how you were assigned a particular flight. You may be playing in the VP flight but be in the Presidents bracket for singles or vice versa. We took all the golfers and split them in the middle. So the top ½ of the club by index will be assigned to the Pres. Singles and the bottom ½ was assigned to the VP Singles. The flights are decided the same way for each tournament but it depends on who is playing and who isn t on any given tournament. The Singles Bracket is posted on the website. Doubles sign up will begin in October. It is your responsibility (if you would like to play doubles) to find a partner and sign up as a team. It is not the board s responsibility to find you a partner. Doubles will begin in either December or January depending on the number of teams that sign up.

3 COSTA MESA TOURNAMENT Our next tournament is Saturday, September 10th at Costa Mesa Country Club. Our 1 st time is 10:00 and the cost will be $100 including side pot. The side pot will Low Net. We will pay 2 places and it is just your net score for the round. We will be playing blue tees on all par 4 s and par 5 s. We will play white tees on all par 3 s. Please let Steve Grosky know if you are scheduled and will not be able to attend or would like to play and are not on the list. Please check the website the night before the tournament to verify your start time in case of changes. As always it is appreciated if you could check-in an hour before your scheduled time. ORCO TELCO DUES Just reminders that dues are past due for those that have not paid! Please make sure you pay the past due $125 no later than the September Tournament. If you have not paid and will not be playing in September please send your dues by mail to Andy Sahli. I want to thanks Marty Cloud, Bob Moore, John Mehlmauer and Tony Perez s buddy George Robles for stepping up at the July Tournament and committing to represent Orco Telco. Please see the State page on the website to see the 4 teams and their current low index that they will be playing to at the tournament. For those of you that have not paid, please make sure you bring the $170 fee to the tournament at Costa Mesa. I look forward to seeing all of you at state and hope the Orco Telco teams walk away with all the $. CONDOLENCES On behalf of the Orco Telco I would like to offer condolences to Henry Adkins and his family. Henry s younger brother passed away in his sleep a couple days before our July Tournament. Henry who had not slept in a couple days still showed up at our tournament and played. Henry is one of the good guys and a long time member. Henry we are sorry for your loss! Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family in this difficult time.
