Par 70 6,749 Yards Live Scoring: Carolina Tee Times: Host Institution: Gamecocks Aim for Return Trip to NCAA Championship It s been a long month for the South Carolina golf team to wait for their return to action after a disappointing showing at the SEC Championships, and the Gamecocks look to make the most of it at this week s NCAA East Regional. The tournament runs Thursday through Saturday at the par 70, 6,749-yard Course at Yale in New Haven, Conn. South Carolina is the No. 3 seed in the 14-team field with five spots up for grabs in next month s NCAA Championship. Palmetto State Pride As in every prior event this season, all five competitiors in this week s starting lineup will not only be playing for the Gamecocks, but also for state pride as the entire Carolina lineup is native to the Palmetto State. The five competitors for the Gamecocks in the SEC Championship will be senior George Bryan IV (Chapin), senior Patrick Rada (Anderson), sophomore Wesley Bryan (Chapin), senior Paul Woodbury (Lake City) and redshirt freshman Clint Tolleson (Spartanburg). Experience May Be Key Three of the five competitors in the Gamecock lineup have appeared in at least one previous NCAA Regional, with one making multiple appearances. Senior George Bryan IV has played in the NCAA Regional each of his first three seasons. As a freshman, he posted three rounds in the 60s to tie for 10th place and help the Gamecocks win the NCAA West Regional in Tempe, Ariz., to advance to the NCAA Championship. His sophomore appearance did not go so well as he tied for 113th place and the Gamecocks missed the cut. Last season, he tied for 14th in the regional at Sorrento, Fla., to help South Carolina back to the NCAA Championship in Toledo, Ohio. Senior Patrick Rada and sophomore Wesley Bryan will make their second appearances in the NCAA postseason. Rada tied for 44th at last year s regional but posted a first-round 68 to give the Gamecocks an early boost. Bryan tied his older brother for 14th place with a 208. A Repeat of Last Year Would Be Nice In last season s NCAA Southeast Regional, the Gamecocks (along with most of the rest of the field) torched the layout at RedTail Golf Club in Sorrento, Fla., to post the third-lowest 54-hole score in school history en route to a tie for second place and a berth in the 2009 NCAA Championship. Then-senior Mark Silvers III was the main catalyst as his final-round 64 earned him a top-10 finish at 207 (-6) and helped give the Gamecocks a team score of 269, the best of the day, to move from a tie for fifth place into a three-way tie for second with Arizona and Georgia. George Bryan IV and Wesley Bryan tied for 14th place at 208 (-5). Three Gamecocks Named All-SEC Senior George Bryan IV was named First Team All-SEC for the second time in his career while senior Paul Woodbury and sophomore Wesley Bryan earned spots on the league s Second Team. Bryan IV is wrapping up his career as one of the most prolific golfers in South Carolina history. His career scoring average of stands atop the record books, as does his average of thus far in the Golfstat.com Thursday - 8 a.m. (No. 1 Tee) --Paired with UCLA and Texas Friday - 9:10 a.m. (No. 1 Tee) --Paired with UCLA and Texas Saturday: TBA (based on team standings) Yale University NCAA EAST REGIONAL FIELD 1. 2 season. He has tied for medalist honors twice this season - including the SEC Championship - falling in playoffs on both occasions. This marks his third selection to the All-SEC team, matching his first-team distinction in 2008 and adding to his placement on the second team in He becomes the fifth South Carolina golfer to be named All-SEC three times, joining Eric Ecker, Eirik Johansen, David Seawell and Kyle Thompson. Wesley Bryan, the younger brother of George, is third on the team and 11th in the SEC with a scoring average on the season. His most impressive feat in 2010 was a round of 64 (-7) in the second round of the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate on March 29 that ranks as the second-best round in Gamecock golf history. Bryan was also named to the SEC All-Freshman Team last season. Woodbury is making his first appearance on the All-SEC team after a stellar senior campaign. Woodbury became the first Gamecock to win two tournaments in one season since Kyle Thompson in as he captured medalist honors at the Rees Jones Intercollegiate and the Seminole Intercollegiate, winning both tournaments in playoffs. Equaling the Bryan brothers with 14 rounds at par or better this season, Woodbury is second on the team and ninth in the SEC with a scoring average. A Look at the NCAA East Regional Field UCLA and Texas, the top two seeds, are both ranked in the nation s top 10 as the Longhorns are No. 8 and the Bruins are No. 7 according to Golfweek. The Gamecocks, as the No. 3 seed, are ranked 15th, with the other two top seeds, Virginia and Alabama, ranked 20th and 27th, respectively. Six conference champions are in the field, including No. 31 East Tennessee State (Atlantic Sun), No. 42 Southeastern Louisiana (Southland), No. 43 Charlotte (Atlantic-10), No. 45 Kent State (Mid-American), Columbia (Ivy) and Lafayette (Patriot). SEC foe Vanderbilt is the No. 10 seed with Penn State and UNC Wilmington rounding out the field. Around the Southeastern Conference... Ten of the 12 SEC schools earned bids to the NCAA postseason. The Gamecocks are in New Haven with Alabama and Vanderbilt. Arkansas and Ole Miss will play in Alpharetta, Ga.; Florida and LSU will compete in Notre Dame, Ind.; Georgia and Auburn are playing in College Station, Texas; and Tennessee is set to compete in San Diego, Calif. Quality Coaches = Quality Play Last week, assistant coach Michael Burcin was named a finalist for the Jan Strickland Award, presented annually to the nation s top assistant golf coach, for the third straight year. Burcin is in his sixth year at South Carolina and has seen three of his previous five teams advance to the NCAA Championship. Gamecocks in USGA Qualifying George Bryan IV shot a 4-under 68 in local qualifying for the U.S. Open on May 10 in Peachtree City, Ga., to earn one of eight spots into sectional qualifying. Former Gamecock Mark Silvers III also advanced from the Kennesaw, Ga., local qualifier on the same day, and another former Gamecock, Mark Anderson, was the medalist at the local qualifier in Bluffton, S.C., on May 17. Last Time Here NCAA Southeast Regional Senior Mark Silvers III fired a personal-best 64 (-7) to lead South Carolina to a team round of 269 (-15) and a tie for second place at RedTail Golf Club in Sorrento, Fla., earning a berth into the NCAA Championship. It was a record-setting day across the board for South Carolina. The team score of 269 ties for the second-best in school history, equaling their second-round total at the 2007 NCAA West Regional in Tempe, Ariz., and is only two shots behind the school-record total of 267 from the 1999 Red River Classic. In addition, the total 54-hole team score of 829 (-23) is the third-lowest in school history, also behind the same two aforementioned tournaments. Led by Silvers, the whole team put on a charge down the back nine. Over the final nine holes of the tournament, the Gamecocks were a collective 12-under as they carded 15 birdies against one double-bogey and one bogey. Going Low...Really Low A week before Phil Mickelson, Anthony Kim and the rest of the Masters field posted low numbers at Augusta National, the Gamecocks were setting records just a couple of miles down the road. In the second round of the Administaff Augusta State Invitational, South Carolina shot a team score of 266 (-22), which broke an 11-year-old school record by one stroke. Four of the five Gamecocks were in the 60s, including a pair of 65s from George Bryan IV and Wesley Bryan. Paul Woodbury was two shots back with a career-best 67, and Clint Tolleson shot 69. The team finished the weekend at 833 (-31), the fourthlowest 54-hole total in Carolina annals, and Bryan IV and Woodbury tied for third place at 206 (-10). But the fun got started earlier in the week. Sophomore Wesley Bryan and senior Patrick Rada flirted with school records in the second round of the Hootie at Bulls Bay as both had the best rounds of their respective careers. Bryan tied the second-lowest score in South Carolina history with a 64 (-7) that included one stretch of seven birdies in eight holes. It also tied the then-tournament record, held by two other individuals. Rada, on the same day, fired a 66 (-5), one shot better than his previous career best, as the two led the Gamecocks to the fourth-lowest single-day team score in school history at 272 (-12). Rada, Bryan Earn Top-10 Finishes at Hootie at Bulls Bay Patrick Rada and Wesley Bryan each fired rounds of 70 (-1) in Tuesday s final round of the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate, earning finishes in the tournament s top 10 and leading South Carolina to a fourth-place team finish. The Gamecocks shot a team score of 282 (-2) on Tuesday to finish at 850 (-2) for the tournament, five shots behind tournament champion LSU. The team score marked South Carolina s best of the season by 16 strokes. Rada earned his third top-10 finish of the season with three rounds of par or better, going =207 (-6) to finish in third place, three shots out of the lead. His score of 207 marks the lowest of his career by five shots, surpassing a 212 in the 2008 Mason Rudolph Invitational. Bryan, after tying the then-course record with a 64 (-7) in Monday s second round, had an up-and-down round on Tuesday that finished at 1-under 70. His total score of 209 (-4) was the second-best of his collegiate career and earned him a seventh-place finish, his fourth top-10 of the season. Paul Woodbury had the strongest round of the day on Tuesday, carding a 2-under-par 69 to move up to a tie for 32nd place. He was consistent throughout the round, including back-to-back birdies at nine and 10, and he drained a 35-footer for birdie at the 18th to close his week. George Bryan IV closed with a 73 (+2) to tie with Woodbury at 32nd place, and Clint Tolleson shot 77 (+6) on the final day. Gamecocks Take 10th at Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational South Carolina shot its best team round of the week on Sunday, but the Gamecocks were unable to move up the leaderboard as they finished 10th at the Schenkel E-Z-GO Invitational. The Gamecocks shot 292 (+4) on Sunday to post a three-day total of 878 (+14). George Bryan IV and Paul Woodbury tied for 15th place individually at 217 (+1) for the week. Bryan IV had the team s low round Sunday with a 71 (-1) while Woodbury posted a 73 (+1). Wesley Bryan and Clint Tolleson tied for 48th place at 7-over par; Tolleson shot 73 (+1) to wrap up his week while Bryan posted a final-round 76 (+4). Patrick Rada finished with a 75 (+3) on Sunday, his best round of the week. Woodbury Wins; Gamecocks One Stroke Short at Seminole Inter. Junior Paul Woodbury earned South Carolina s second individual medal of the season while the Gamecocks came up one stroke short of host Florida State in a wild finish at the Seminole Intercollegiate. Woodbury won a four-hole playoff to defeat Florida State senior Seath Lauer to claim the tournament title after the pair tied at 212 (-1) through 54 holes. It was the lowest 54-hole score in the Lake City, S.C., senior s career. 3 good enough for a solid second-place finish. One of Florida State s top players signed an incorrect scorecard and was disqualified, forcing the Seminoles to take its highest score of the day - a 78 that otherwise would have been dropped. The resulting nine-stroke swing shrank the margin from 10 strokes to just one as the Seminoles barely held on for the tournament title at 865 (+13). Wesley Bryan just missed picking up his fourth straight top-10 finish as he tied for 11th at 216 (+3). Bryan, who entered the day tie for third place, signed for a 74 (+3) after fighting a tough back nine. Clint Tolleson earned his fourth top-20 finish of the season - his second in a row - with a tie for 16th as he shot 73 on Sunday to finish at 218 (+5). Dean Hester posted his best round as a collegian - and his first under par - with a 2-under-par 69 to move up to a tie for 26th place at 8-over-par 221 for the week. Also in 26th place was Patrick Rada, who shot 74 (+3) on Sunday to move to 8-over for the week. George Bryan IV was one shot back of Hester and Rada, tied for 28th at 222 (+9). Third Straight Top-10 for Bryan at Seahawk Intercollegiate South Carolina earned a runner-up finish at the rain-shortened Seahawk Intercollegate by recording a score of =588 (+12). The Gamecocks finished 19 strokes behind tournament champion Augusta State at the Country Club of Landfall s Nicklaus Course. Wesley Bryan was the top finisher for the Gamecocks, shooting 73-71=144 (E) and finishing in a tie for sixth place. George Bryan IV tied for 11th at 146 (+2) and Clint Tolleson tied for 18th with a 149 (+5). The teams were on the course when the tournament was halted, and results reverted to the end of the second round. Patrick Rada tied for 24th place after shooting 76-74=150 (+6) on the opening day, and fellow Paul Woodbury shot 75-77=152 (+8) to tie for 33rd place. Freshman Dean Hester, competing in his first varsity event as an individual, tied for 39th place at 153 (+9). Bryan Brothers Lead Gamecocks at Isleworth Senior George Bryan IV and sophomore Wesley Bryan earned top-10 individual finishes at the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational, leading South Carolina s men s golf team to an overall sixth-place showing, their best ever at the prestigious event at Isleworth Country Club. The Gamecocks shot 295 (+7) in the final round to finish at 898 (+34), 14 strokes better than their performance in the same event last year. The sixth-place showing was also significantly higher than the 2008 event, when South Carolina finished 16th in the 18-team field. Carolina s round on Tuesday was the second-best of the day, only three shots behind Georgia s 292 (+4). George Bryan IV turned in his second straight top-10 finish, shooting 70 (-2) on Friday to jump up to fifth place at 218 (+2) for the tournament. The native of Chapin had one of only four rounds under par on the day. It was the ninth top-5 finish of Bryan s career, moving him into a tie for third place in school history with Eirik Johansen. Wesley Bryan shot 74 (+2) on Friday to move up two spots to a tie for seventh place, giving the Gamecocks multiple top-10 finishers for the third time in four fall events. It marked the fourth top-10 finish of Bryan s career. Also closing strong for South Carolina was senior Paul Woodbury. The native of Lake City improved by six strokes in his final round, posting a 73 (+1). Gamecocks Win by 37 Shots at Rees Jones; Woodbury Beats Bryan in Playoff South Carolina s men s golf team sprinted away from the rest of the field at the Rees Jones Intercollegiate on Tuesday, winning by an unprecedented 37 shots to claim the top spot in the event for the second straight year. Seniors Paul Woodbury and George Bryan IV tied for individual medalist honors at 2-under, and two of the remaining three Gamecocks finished in the tournament s top 10. Woodbury defeated Bryan in a playoff for his first career tournament victory. It almost seemed like a repeat of last year s Rees Jones Intercollegiate. In that event, Woodbury shared the individual title with Wesley Bryan and the Gamecocks ran away with the title, winning by 21 strokes. This time, it was older brother George Bryan IV turning in a round of 69 (-3) to make up a three-shot deficit on his teammate to earn a share of the championship. Woodbury finished the day at even par and turned in rounds of =214 to equal Bryan at 2-under for the week. Not to be overlooked was senior Patrick Rada, whose 2-over 74 on Tuesday bumped him up one spot to sixth place. He would finish at 222 (+6) for the tournament. In addition, sophomore Wesley Bryan earned his first top-10 of the season after shooting 74 (+2) on Tuesday. He tied for ninth place at 225 (+9) for the week. Redshirt freshman Clint Tolleson caught fire in the second round Monday afternoon to move into the top 20, but fell a few spots after shooting 79 (+7) on Tuesday. He finished tied for 23rd at 230 (+14). Gamecocks Tie for Top Spot, Fall in Playoff at Mason Rudolph Intercollegiate South Carolina s fired a final-round 282 (-2) to finish at 556 (-12) and tied with Middle Tennessee State for first place at the rain-shortened Mason Rudolph Intercollegiate, but fell to the Blue Raiders in a sudden-death playoff for the tournament title. Senior Patrick Rada led the team for the second straight week, turning in a careerbest performance to tie for second place overall at the Vanderbilt Legends Club on Sunday. Rada shot rounds of 67-69=136 (-6) to finish in a tie for second place overall. Redshirt freshman Clint Tolleson was especially impressive, tying for 10th place in just his second collegiate event after rounds of 68-71=139 (-3). George Bryan IV made the turn at 1-under with two birdies and a bogey on the front nine, then carded two bogeys and a birdie on the back to shoot 71. Paired with his 69 on Friday, Bryan IV finished at 2-under for the week, tied for 16th place. Sophomore Wesley Bryan was the third Gamecock to fire an even-par 71 on the day, finishing at 1-over for the tournament and tied for 30th place. Senior Paul Woodbury shot 75 in the final round to finish at 145 (+3) and tied for 40th place. Gamecocks Open Season with Fifth Place at Carpet Capital The South Carolina men s golf team fired its best round of the three-day Carpet Capital Collegiate on Sunday, but dropped two spots to fifth place as the Gamecocks wrapped up their first tournament of the season. South Carolina shot 289 (+1) in the final round at The Farm Golf Club and finished at 872 (+8) for the week. Patrick Rada turned in his second straight round of 2-under 70, earning a tie for 11th place at 215 (-1) for the week. It marks the best finish for Rada since his tie for ninth place at the Mason Rudolph Invitational last season. Paul Woodbury, who was 4-under for the week coming into today, would finish at even-par 216 for the tournament and tied for 14th place, a vast improvement from his 83rd-place showing a year ago. George Bryan IV and Wesley Bryan both had their best rounds of the week with matching scores of evenpar 72. The brothers from Chapin, S.C., finished tied for 29th place at 221 (+5). Clint Tolleson, making his first collegiate appearance, had his best round of the week Sunday with a 75 (+3).
