Campillo finished with a 218 ( ), and IU claimed an 894 ( ) at the Sand Ridge Golf Club (par 71, 7,085 yards). Campillo started the final round in a tie for the 21st spot but made a move up the leaderboard with a 1-over-par 72 in the final round. His finish was the best for a freshman making his collegiate debut since Ryan Cassidy tied for sixth place at the 2000 Legends Intercollegiate. GOPHER INVITATIONAL (SEPT ) MINNEAPOLIS - Two Hoosiers netted top-20 finishes, and the Indiana men's golf team claimed sixth place in the 12-team field at the Gopher Invitational. Entering the final round in a tie for ninth, the Hoosiers finished the tournament at 862 ( ) on the University of Michigan Golf Course (par 71, 6,704 yards). Despite shooting a final-round 77, Jorge Campillo garnered the top Hoosier finish, tying for 22nd at 215. Rounds of 70 and 68 on Sept. 24 helped the freshman corral his third straight top-25 finish. Following Campillo, freshman Drew Allenspach notched his third consecutive top-30 result, claiming a 73 on the final day. The Sugar Land, Texas native posted a 71 and 72 in rounds one and two, respectively, giving him a 216 total and a share of 26th place. BIG TEN/PAC-10 CHALLENGE (OCT. 3-4) CHICAGO - The Indiana men's golf team reached as high as fifth at the Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge in the third and final round, but a tough backend at the Glen Club (par 72, 7,236) caused the Hoosiers ( ) to slip to an 11th-place finish overall. Freshman Drew Allenspach ( ) performed more like a veteran at the challenge, pacing the Hoosiers with a career-best 18th-place tie. The Challenge brought the top-seven programs from the Big Ten and the Pac-10 together with Allenspach showing why he will be a Hoosier to watch this season. Allenspach's top-20 finish was the ninth-best Big Ten individual finish in the highly-competitive field. During the campaign, Mayer led the Hoosiers back into the NCAAs for the second straight year, the first time since the and seasons IU has made return appearances in the postseason. Indiana also corralled its best finish at the Big Ten Championships since 1998, finishing in second place, five shots behind Michigan State. At the Big Tens, arguably IU s greatest golfer, Jeff Overton, became the first Hoosier since Shaun Micheel in 1991 to win medalist honors. He plowed through the field with a record-tying total of 199. Overall, the team collected its fifth victory in two seasons and seventh under Mayer s direction, winning the Xavier Invitational for the second consecutive season. Indiana finished the year with eight topfive and four top-three finishes, including three second-place showings. The Hoosiers carded a scoring average, second only to the mark set the previous season. Mayer also directed the career of one of the most accomplished golfers to ever step foot on the IU campus. Overton completed his four years in Bloomington leaving his personal stamp on the program. Overton earned second team All-America accolades in 2004 and He is the only Hoosier golfer to ever card a single-season scoring average under 70 with in , and his career average of bested Randy Leen s mark for the top spot in school history. The Evansville, Ind., native won eight career tournaments, including Big Ten medalist honors in 2005, and for the second straight year was named Big Ten Player of the Year in , becoming the first Hoosier since Leen ( ) to garner the award in consecutive seasons. Additionally in , Overton won the Les Bolstad Award for low season stroke average for the second time in as many years. He was named to the All-Big Ten team all four years of his career, claiming first team honors three times. He also became the first Hoosier to participate in both the Walker and Palmer Cups in Indiana s success came on the heels of one one of the greatest seasons in the program s history in For the first time since the season and the first time in his tenure, Mayer led the Hoosiers into the NCAA tournament. IU finished tied for 20th at the Central Regional, and Overton became the first Hoosier since Randy Leen (1998) to advance to the NCAA Championships. In addition to returning to the NCAAs, Mayer led Indiana to four team titles, the second most in school history and the most in a single season since Mayer also coached Indiana s first All-American since Leen (1998) in Overton. Along with Overton, Mayer helped develop Heath Peters into one of the top golfers in the conference. Peters narrowly missed advancing to the NCAA Championships, tying for 30th at the NCAA Regionals. Fossum/Spartan Invitational (April 22-23) - 8 Peters finished the year earning a spot on the All- Midwest Region team and was a second team All- Big Ten member. Overton and Peters helped the Hoosiers continue on a steady climb to the top as the team improved its finish at the Big Ten Championships each of their four seasons in Bloomington. After tying for sixth as a freshman, finishing sixth as sophomores and placing fifth two years ago as juniors, Indiana claimed a second-place finish at last season s championships. Overton took home medalist honors, tying the Big Ten 54-hole scoring record. The success derived by Mayer is even more rewarding given Mayer s familiarity with IU. He is an alum of the university and spent nine seasons as an assistant coach under Sam Carmichael before taking over the men s program in the fall of During those nine seasons as an assistant coach, Mayer was a part of two Big Ten Championships and a trip to the NCAA Championships. In his first year as head coach, Mayer had the pressure of repeating what the team had accomplished in 1998, winning a Big Ten Championship. Though the Hoosiers did not repeat, he helped set the foundation for what is once again one of the top programs in the conference. In that first season, Mayer had his first All-Big Ten recipient as Brent Landry was named to the all-conference squad. With Steve Wheatcroft accomplishing the feat in 2000 and 2001, Overton in 2002 and 2003, Overton and Peters in 2004 and Overton once again being selected All-Big Ten last season, Mayer has coached at least one Hoosier golfer to All-Big Ten honors in each of his seven full seasons. Individual accolades have not only come for Mayer s golfers on the course, but also in the classroom. During his tenure, Indiana golfers have earned 33 Academic All-Big Ten honors, including a program record eight in both 2004 and Ryan Cassidy was named an All-America Scholar in 2004, while Brad Marek and Scott Seibert collected All-America Scholar honors in Mayer has brought the Hoosiers into the Big Ten spotlight as the conference has emerged as one of the best in the nation. A big asset in Mayer returning the program to prominence has been his strong recruiting classes. Over the last four campaigns, Mayer has turned in four exceptional recruiting classes that have shattered records throughout the Hoosier record book. He has retained the top talent from the state of Indiana while extending into the international fray to bring in new recruits. Over the last three seasons, Mayer s newcomers have produced the first-, second-, fourth-, fifth-, sixth- and the 12th-lowest freshman scoring stroke averages in school history. Mayer s recruits also have set new season and career stroke averages. Overton owns the top two and the fifth-lowest single-season scoring averages in school history, while Peters claims the 10th-lowest single-season stroke average. In addition, Overton closed his career with the lowest career average in the program s history, while Peters staked the third-lowest career average. Born Michael Barry Mayer on February 17, 1957 in Seymour, Ind., Mayer married the former Kimberly Collier on July 26, The couple resides in Unionville.
