Newsletter of the Samford Valley Target Archers (ABN ) Newsletter No. 26 So, the Christmas Break-up has been had. Word had it that about 70 people planned to turn up. December 2015 but I think Frans Roodt had actually beaten him, and Scott Hagaman was third in that list. For the Recurve Club championship, it seemed something of a foregone conclusion the Emilia Paton would take that out, I m not sure how many were actually there, but everyone seemed happy to be there, particularly Michael Schilling who had been (holidaying?) on an island to our North, and the food was much and varied, and much savoured. Awards happened as well, and apart from the Old Faithful award (which should have been Old {but not that old} Faithful award), those judged by the crowd seemed appropriate. with Dave Barwick and Patrick Barden as runners-up. And the Silver Arrow Participation award went to Patrick Barden, with Dave Arrowsmith and Vaughn Pinxit chasing after. Club Champions were declared; Nick Horley seemed to think he d won all of the Compound stuff,
The Most Improved archer of 2016 went to Luke Schmidt, who either didn t like the photo flash, or it was way past his bed-time. the number of the target as they draw down into the holding position, to ensure that they are shooting at the correct target. There are regulations about the size of the wind flag, and its placement. The bottom of the wind flag has to be 40 cm above the top of the number frame. So, considerable person-hours have been expended, and will be expended, in organising the correct target set-up for the Australian Open tournament in March next year. However, when the wind flag is placed in the top frame, the whole set-up is too tall to fit under the roller doors when the targets are removed from, or returned to, the shed. Apologies, Luke, for a less than flattering photo, and congratulations to all of the Club Champion placegetters. The Australian Open target butts, numbers and flags. Members should have noticed that the target butts have changed somewhat. The butts now sport a frame at the top, painted black, and there is a new wind flag hanging from the back of that frame. There s a hole in the top of the frame to accommodate the wind flag when it is required. This has not been done for fun. There are regulations from World Archery, and Archery Australia, about just about all of the set-up for archery tournaments. Strangely enough, there does not seem to be a rule about where target numbers should appear. However, most archers would seem to prefer to be able to note Because of this, notices were placed in what was thought to be conspicuous positions to remind archers to lower ( dismount ) the flags before returning the targets to the shed. So far, one flag has been irreparably damaged, because an archer failed to notice the notices and/or comply with the request. So, the decision has been made to remove the new flags, which will 2
still be able to be used if required, but it will be a deliberate, conscious decision. The old wind flags, mounted into the top of the target rounds will be available for less formal use. If you don t actually want/need to use a wind flag, please don t mount it on the frame. If you use the wind flag please dismount it from the frame before returning the target to the shed. Please be thoughtful and considerate about Club equipment, and the work that members have put into it. If you think this is a bit of a rant you re correct the Editor is considerably angry!!!. LOST Neve Walsh may have lost a couple of charm bracelet charms at the Club in the weekend of the 5 th /6 th. The charms were an arrow and a paper plane. Should you find/have found them, either give them to a Management Committee member, or return them directly to Neve she d be over the moon. While we re on the advertisements Robert Walmsley is looking for a part time support person so he can shoot archery more often on Saturdays. Lynn Walmsley can drop him off at the club, but Robert is looking for someone to spend 1.5 to 2 hours at archery with him helping him to set up and load his arrows on his bow, and then take him home to Everton Hills. If that person has a first aid certificate and police check then Robert can sign them up as a support worker for funding and pay $25 per hour plus petrol contribution. If anyone is available could you please contact Lynn on luwbert@iprimus.com.au - And in the Personal section, from El Presidente I would like to wish everyone and your family a very merry Christmas, I hope Santa is good to you and remembers that you love archery. Brian Hagaman....And... In the lead up to next year s shooting season I would like to remind archers of their responsibilities with respect to scoring. This process is important as scores can be claimable for Club Records, SQAS Records and also for AA awards. To participate in the shoot of the day (morning or afternoon) and submit an official score you must start on time as a group. There must be at least 3 archers participating in the shoot. You and a second archer must see your arrows in the target and witness the score values entered onto the score sheet. At the end of the shoot the archer verifying the arrow values is to witness the scores by signing the score sheet to certify to the correct arrow values. Please use Archers Diary, desirably electronically scoring at the targets, but always complete a paper score sheet at the target as this is the official record. If all archers get used to scoring electronically at the target then when a major competition is held you will be familiar with the process and this will help the event run smoothly. The SQAS Matchplay Championships were held on the 14 th of November. It didn t start as a great day for archery 3
Most people would know by now that Jabara Callaghan-Audet, a Cub archer from the Gold Coast shot a 717 round at 35 metres so he had a number of perfects, which I did not get to record. Amazing shooting!! The Recurve Champions were, --but it did fine up in time to get the ranking round and the matchplay in. There were a few spectators,-- Taylor Worth (Gold), Kate Goodridge (Silver), and Emilia Paton (Bronze). The Compound Champions were, --and a few Perfects shot, this one by Emily Sutton, for instance Jabara Callaghan-Audet (Gold), Remy Leonard (Silver), and Frans Roodt (Bronze). Congratulations to all, particularly to our Club s representatives (including the un-placed ones). 4

Member corner The idea of a bit of a word picture of the Club s members was raised recently. It seems that perhaps The Editor should volunteer to be the first guinea pig, it might encourage others to submit something for further editions. It could be as brief and unrevealing as you want, or you could bare your soul to the literary world. Let s see who I am:- Evan Fisher Born in Townsville (Qld) in Father a bank officer and mother doing what is now called home duties (aka housewife ) Primary school education in Bundaberg, Cairns, Ayr. Now qualified as an Archery Instructor. Why archery? I m not really sure. I suspect that it s because it s something that not everyone does. Though I am normally fairly introverted, I quite like to differentiate myself doing things that are a bit unusual play didgeridoo, throw boomerangs, shoot arrows. I used to be a reasonable rifle shot in my western Queensland boyhood holiday days. Fascination with projectiles? Going to have a holiday sometime after March That s it! What s important in that for other people to think about offering if anything? 1. Birthplace? 2. Education history? 3. Qualifications? 4. A bit about working life? 5. A touch of family life? 6. A bit about archery life and equipment? 7. A bit about why archery? 8. Whinges and moans? Have a go and reveal yourself? The members of the Management Committee wish all members and their families - a safe and happy Christmas, and a great (and hard working Australian Open) New Year for
STOP PRESS!! - Take a look at the latest edition of the Archery Australia Board News (December 2015), which is on the noticeboard, with particular reference to the mention of Online training course for club officials. Hopefully President Brian will be able to explain it to us in time. 8
