In the Arnold Palmer Bracket, Louis Colbert over Chris Yednock 1 Up 19 Holes; in the Jack Nicklaus Bracket, Phil Sosalla over Don Uhl 3 and 1; the upper bracket champions Louis Colbert and Phil Sosalla will now compete in the overall EMGA match play semifinals. In the Lee Trevino Bracket Bill King over Dick Habbinga 4 and 3, and in the Gary Player Bracket it was T.C. Smith over Bob Laurie 3 and 2. The lower bracket champions, Bill King and T.C. Smith will now compete in the other semifinal. Winners of each semifinal will then compete for the 2012 EMGA Match Play Championship. The semifinals must be completed by 30 August but competitors are encouraged to complete their matches as soon as practical. Winners need to post results on the spreadsheets posted on the bulletin board in the men s locker room. Players are reminded that per paragraph VIII of the EMGA Match Play Rules and Procedures, they must use the current handicap on the day of the match to establish their match handicap adjustment. 2 Open Play/Open Play Competition Table Volunteers. We are looking for volunteers to man the tables during our OP/OPC events. Two shifts of two men each man the tables and are provided tee times following their respective shifts. Only two dates still need volunteers: first shift 6 Sep and both shifts 20 Sep. We will continue to play them beginning again next year. Scott Walters, the former head pro at Bear Creek failed to enter our match on their schedule. When I tried to confirm the dates 30 days in advance, it was a surprise to the new pro, and it was too late to fit it into their schedule. Sorry for those who wanted to play Bear Creek. We will play again next year. Phil Sanders Rules Committee Two of the recent changes to the Rules of Golf come into play when a ball moves after address. First, Rule 18-2b has been changed to provide an important exception. The rule states: If a player s ball in play moves after he has addressed it (other than as a result of a stroke), the player is deemed to have moved the ball and incurs a penalty of one stroke. The ball must be replaced, unless the movement of the ball occurs after the player has begun the stroke or the backward movement of the club for the stroke and the stroke is made. Exception: If it is known or virtually certain that the player did not cause his ball to move, Rule 18-2b does not apply. The second change involves the definition of Addressing the Ball which has changed to provide that a player has addressed the ball when he has grounded his club immediately in front of or immediately behind the ball, whether or not he has taken his stance. (The former rule required a combination of grounding the club and taking a stance.) Example Scenarios: 1. On a relatively windless day, on a relatively level putting green, John grounds his club immediately behind his ball and the ball moves before he makes a stroke. It is not known whether the grounding of the club was the cause of the ball moving. Ruling: one stroke penalty and the ball must be replaced. Rule 18-2b applies. As there is no obvious reason why the ball moved after the player had addressed it, John was deemed to have moved it. 2. On a windy day, on a relatively level putting green, John grounds his club immediately behind his ball and the ball moves as he prepares to make a stroke. Everyone present agrees that the wind caused the ball to move. Ruling: no penalty and the ball must be played from where it came to rest. Exception to Rule 18-2b applies because it was virtually certain that it was the wind that caused the ball to move and not John. The same result applies if the ball moved before address. 3. On a relatively windless day, on a steeply sloping putting green, John grounds his club immediately behind his ball and the ball moves nearer to the hole before he makes a stroke. Everyone present agrees that John could not have caused the ball to move. Ruling: one stroke penalty and the ball must be replaced. Decision 18-2b/11 states that gravity is not in itself an element that should be considered when applying the Exception to Rule 18-2b; therefore, John is deemed to have moved the ball after taking address. 3 Hospitality Committee Joanne Salem, wife of Roy, passed away on Monday, July 30, Joanne was a longtime realtor in Colorado Springs, and an active member of St. Patrick s Catholic Church. For those of you who know Roy, no further information is necessary. New EMGA members should know that Roy Salem was an influential member of EMGA beginning in Roy was elected vice president in 2001, served as president in 2002 and then helped manage our Interclub competitions beginning in His participation in golf lessened, due to health issues. Services for Joanne will be held at St. Patrick s Catholic Church, 6455 Brook Park Dr. Colorado Springs, CO (This is just east of the Dublin House.) Prayer Vigil: Friday Aug 3, :00-6:00 P.M. Mass of Christian Burial to be held on Saturday, Aug 4, :00 A.M. A card of condolences was sent to Roy on behalf of all EMGA members. Bring a Guest Day Remaining OP/OPC Days As you are probably aware, this year we are trying out a Bring a Guest Day during selected OP/OPC play days. The objective is to bring a friend to join us and see that it s a lot of fun and a good group of guys and hopefully, they ll be interested in joining the EMGA. Unfortunately, our first attempt this year was cancelled due to a schedule change. It s been decided to make all three remaining OP/OPC play dates a Bring a Guest Day. Currently, these play dates are 23 August, 6 & 20 September. You are encouraged to bring a friend that is eligible to become an EMGA member to participate on one of these days. Below are the guidelines for these days: - Please limit to two friends (we want to have at least 2 EMGA members per group) - Guests must be eligible to join the EMGA (men who are eligible to for membership) - Guests may participate in OPC ($5.00 fee) under the following conditions: Must have a valid GHIN handicap to play in the OPC Inform Lou Burkel (louburkel@comcast.net) your guest s name and GHIN number When signing up in the book, must include guest s name & GHIN number All winnings for guest will be added to EMGA sponsor s account in Pro Shop Any winnings by guest will be sponsor s responsibility to handle with your guest As always, please provide feedback concerning this initiative to any of the members of the board or via the feedback forms in the locker room. At the end of the season, the board will evaluate this program. Call for Nominees for 2013 Executive Committee We are currently soliciting volunteers for two Executive Committee positions for next year. We have openings for the Vice President and the Treasurer. If you re interested in either of these positions, please let Marc Sims (m.sims@q.com) know. Please contact the current incumbents if you have any questions about the roles and responsibilities for these positions. Our association depends on volunteers to organize and set up the events so that we all of us can enjoy the fellowship and golfing activities. 3

4 EMGA Treasurer Joe Gray has been our Treasurer for many years. Joe is stepping down after this year so we need a replacement for the next two years and even beyond. Joe has written out details on what the duties and responsibilities of the Treasurer are. He has also agreed to serve as the Assistant Treasurer for a few months until his replacement is familiar with and comfortable in the job. As Joe likes to say, Being the EMGA Treasurer is fun and enjoyable, enables you to know every member of the EMGA, and is a Piece of Cake!
