2 PROJECT OVERVIEW Tura Beach Golf Club Monday 25 th, Tuesday 26 th, Wednesday 27 th April 2016 IN ATTENDANCE Scott Richardson Chairman of Greens Aaron Miller Course Superintendent James Wilcher Golf By Design Martyn Black Golf NSW John Madigan Club Surveyor INTRODUCTION Subsequent review of course conditions since original visit by Golf NSW in October Particular attention played to the following issues: Bunker renovation / re-design / potential removal Bunker preparation Practice Putting Green / Chipping area design Cart paths Drainage / storm water entering course and subsequent treatment within the course Sub-surface drainage within the course Irrigation system upgrade Council compliance ie: a) Storm water plan b) Rabbit management plan c) Tree management plan d) Weed incursion plan CONSIDERATIONS 1. Bunker renovations James Wilcher (Golf By Design) is one of Australia s leading golf course architects and had a holistic approach to improving the bunkers at Tura Beach. In dealing with the problems of drainage, both caused by seepage and direct surface runoff it is suggested that many bunkers can be reduced in size and in doing so reduce maintenance costs in the future. The clubs excavator is the ideal machine to do this work and in house talent can be improved by utilizing nearby skilled operators to help train course staff. The bunker at the 6 th green would be the first one to receive this treatment and would be used as a yardstick to show members what can be achieved. Therefore consideration should be given to adopting Mr. Wilcher s suggestions which include removal of the fairway bunker on the LHS of the 6 th Fairway, and re-design rather removal of the greenside bunker on the par 3, 9 th hole. 2. Bunker preparation The type of bunker rake was discussed as to which rake is best suited for member use; the problem stems from the inconsistent drainage characteristics of the bunkers as a wet bunker with sand that has become contaminated with foreign material eg: clay will be so compacted that no rake will be of much use. Hence the importance of the bunker improvement programme; a new product about to come onto the market called Bunker Dry would help the drainage characteristics of any bunker being renovated. 3. Practice Putting / Chipping Areas Much time and effort has been applied to coming up with the best solution for the club regarding this issue. It should be said that the proposal put forward by Golf By Design certainly looks like a win win concept and consideration should be given to adopting it in its entirety. 4. Cart Paths Consideration should be given to continuing the cart path plan of high traffic areas only; as opposed to a
3 path around the entire course, drainage of wet areas would be a better use of funds as it helps all golfers and benefits the entire course and club in general. 5. Drainage / Storm Water The retention ponds around the course are an important part of treating the storm water that enters from streets and houses, and a system needs to be implemented whereby each area is de-silted/cleaned so as to maintain their ability to effectively deal with this runoff as per the lease agreement. 6. Drainage on Golf Course Proper As mentioned in the October report and above under Cart Paths ; intercepting of seepage areas by installation of cut off drains should be the start of any plan to prioritize drainage problem areas; high traffic and important play zones to get treated first. 7. Irrigation System Upgrade (see previous report under heading No. 5 Irrigation) Course Super Aaron Miller is aware of various contractors available in the industry. 8. Council Compliance The importance of being proactive with regard to adhering to conditions included in the lease agreement can not be overstated. A good relationship with the council is in every ones best interest; good communication is the key. SUMMARY The golf course during this visit was in great condition, the fairways had benefited from scarification last season and James Wilcher commented the putting surfaces were the best he had ever seen on a regional golf course in Australia. High praise indeed and well earned. Aaron Miller and his staff continue to provide a great test of golf on really good surfaces and no more could be expected of them given their labour levels and budget. High end clubs with double the staff and budget will usually present their course in better detailed presentation on a daily basis, however as to providing a good golfing experience on a regular basis Tura Beach can hold its head high. This is evidenced by the glowing reviews from visiting golfers from far and wide. The clubs decision to engage the professional services of Mr. James Wilcher will hold the club in good stead in the future. Thanks again to all concerned for inviting me to Tura Beach Golf Club.
