April 15-16, 2006 Hosted by Stanford University This Week The University of Northern Colorado men s golf team will have its final tune-up before the 2006 Division I Independent Championships this week when they travel to Stanford to compete in the U.S. Intercollegiate. The event is a homecoming for Bears head coach Wally Goodwin, who was the coach at Stanford from , where he coached elite golfers such as Tiger Woods, Notah Begay and Casey Martin among others. The Bears competed in another Stanford tournament this past fall, placing ninth out of 18 teams at The Prestige at PGA West. The competitive field includes the host Cardinal, California, Fresno State, Hawaii-Hilo, Kansas, Long Beach State, Oregon, Oregon State, Rice, San Diego State, San Jose State, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UCLA, USC, Washington and Washington State. Last Time Out Northern Colorado jumped four spots during the final round of play to finish in sixth place at the Ron Moore Invitational hosted by the University of Denver and held at the Palm Valley Golf Course on March Sophomore Tom Gempel fired his collegiate career-low round of 69 (-3) to finish the event at -2, which tied him for 22nd place overall with teammates Tim Knight and Kyle Sullivan. Knight had a round of 74 on Tuesday while Sullivan closed with a final round score of 71. Junior Eric Higgins fired a score of 4-under 68 to finish at even-par for the event, which placed him 34th. Junior Jon Stecher was two strokes behind Higgins in 46th place. Freshman Jordan Ensrud was actually the Bears top finisher, but competed unattached and did not count towards the team s score. Ensrud finished at -4 for the event, which placed him 18th. Denver s James Love was the individual medalist with a three-round score of 199 (-17). As a team, Northern Colorado finished 13 strokes behind champion Louisville, who is ranked 39th nationally in the latest GolfWeek rankings. The Bears were just five strokes behind rival Colorado State, who was fifth. The Bears did finish a stroke ahead of regional rival Wyoming. Bears to Host Division I Independent Championships Northern Colorado will host the men s and women s 2006 Division I Independent Golf Championships April at Pelican Lakes Golf and Country Club in Windsor. Eight men s teams will vie for the tournament title which is being held for the first time. The men s field includes Francis Marion, North Dakota State, Sacramento State, South Dakota State, Texas- Pan American, Utah Valley State and Weber State. National Rankings In the latest Golfweek national rankings (April 13), Northern Colorado is ranked 104th nationally out of 281 total Division I teams. The Bears were ranked 99th at the end of the fall season, and were 93rd a year ago. Next Up The Bears host the 2006 Division I Independent Golf Championships on April at Pelican Lakes Golf & Country Club in Windsor.
