PROJECT OVERVIEW Sawtell Golf Club Course Report Wednesday 29 th June 2016 IN ATTENDANCE Alvin Kan General Manager Josh Lewis Course Superintendent Martyn Black Golf NSW INTRODUCTION General course appraisal, paying particular attention to bunker issues and the potential of using two new products from Europe. The potential of converting the greens to a new ultradwarf variety of couch. The potential of converting the fairways to Plateau couch The potential for introducing Zoysia into the roughs. OBSERVATIONS Hole by hole observations / considerations: 1 st Swales on the left hand side of green could be modified to improve aesthetics and reduce maintenance issues. 2 nd Tee shot could be deemed too penal for high markers, and would be made more user friendly by the removal of 2 or 3 trees near the creek. The removal of the left hand side bunker at the green and the creation of a swale will be a good result once full grass cover is achieved. 3 rd The removal of the palms to the left of the tee and the small conifers either side of the fairway at the 100m mark would improve the aesthetics of the hole. The mound in front of the pump shed could be removed and the spoil used elsewhere, then a copse of Eucalyptus could be planted to disguise the shed. At the rear of the green the removal of 1 pine and 1 Eucalypt would vastly improve the shade problem without compromising the safety aspect of the 4 th tee shot. Continued

4 th Growth environment of the tee would be much improved with the removal of 2 Swamp Mahogany which have very invasive root systems that are robbing the turf of nutrients and water. Drainage of the bunker at the rear of the green could be made easier by raising the floor of the bunker by approx. 300mm. 5 th The Fig tree to the left of the green is having a detrimental effect not only on the turf of the green and the nearby 6 th /10 th tee complex, but it is also lifting the path and thereby creating a trip hazard. An opportunity exists if the tree was removed to create a ½ way house in the vicinity which would help speed up play and create a new revenue stream. The root system of this tree and its impact on the putting surface is severe; and the problems that arise from blocked drainage systems cannot be overstated. 6 th The large S shaped bunker between the 6 th and 8 th fairways is in the process of being modified to create a grassed surface rather than sand, final shaping should be such that the swales can be easily mown with existing equipment. The planting of a copse of spotted gums on each of the large tongues would create a new and different look to the tee shot on 6 and 8. Front LHS bunker could be modified to improve the surrounds in that area. 7 th This green is one of 2 greens on the course that are deemed to have an unacceptable level of common couch invasion, it is planned to re-surface this green in the near future. The removal of 1 paperbark on the RHS near the disused bunker would be beneficial as this tree is causing shade issues for the rear of the 6 green as well as the obvious impact on the tee shot on this lovely par 3. A more controversial issue would be the removal of the large paperbark between the green and the 8 th tee; as with other areas of the course the problems are obvious, with weak turf and boggy conditions the result. 8 th Course Superintendent Josh Lewis explained his desire to modify the large greenside bunker to become a series of mounds and swales incorporating the rear section of the bunker with the front right section becoming a smaller bunker flowing off the existing tongue.

This concept has merit in that it will result in reduced ongoing maintenance costs, whilst still providing a sand face at the front of the green that provides contrast to the turf and making the golfer think. 9 th Consideration could be given to removing 2 trees just over the creek on the RHS for the tee shot. Work is underway to complete the removal of a fairway bunker to allow extension of the fairway at the dogleg. The removal of one palm tree will be required on the RHS as part of this project. 10 th It is understood that Sawtell Golf Club can suffer badly from prolonged wet periods, and some rudimentary dish drains have been created over the years as a means to remove surface water from fairway areas; Josh Lewis expressed his desire to modify these by either installing a drainage pipe in the existing dish and then levelling or modifying by making them more subtle to enable fairway mowers to properly cut the turf. This would be a worthwhile exercise. Green could be improved by creating a new area to the rear RHS as part of modification to the RHS bunker. The rear of this green would be improved by creating some low profile mounds to retain golf balls, that overshoot the putting surface. 11 th Planned works to replace rotting sleepers with concrete blocks at the tee and green will be a good long term solution for this hole, and the material gained by de-silting the creek and pond area would be useful for future projects such as the aforementioned mounds at rear of th Modify dish drains as per 10 th hole Proposed cart path would require removal of one paperbark at the 180m mark. 13 th Remove one Eucalypt over the bridge on RHS for tee shot. Plans are in the place to create a mound complex on the LHS of green and these should be shaped in such a way to complement the existing mounding on the RHS. Continued

14 th The large white gums on the LHS of the fairway appear to have severe white ant damage and may be deemed dangerous upon inspection by a council tree officer. Should this be the case, re-planting with the same species would be desirable as these trees are an identifying feature of this part of the course. 15 th One of the best looking holes on the course; and any move to address the boundary issue with golf balls existing to the right would best by one done in consultation with a qualified Golf Course Architect. It is understood that the club has had dealings with Richard Chamberlain before and he would be the most obvious choice. It may be as simple as adjusting the tee complex to the right; so as to change the angle of the tee shot. For immediate future, consideration could be given to keeping both bunkers at the right of the green as they give the hole great visual appeal. 16 th Remove Callistemon LHS of new white tee Root prune RHS of all tees As for 7 th this green has large areas of common couch and would benefit from re-surfacing. Long term goal would be a complete re-design as contouring is not ideal given the surrounding lie of the land. 17 th The existing men s back tee whilst unique in its appearance; could be deemed to be a maintenance problem that would be eliminated by doing away with all existing features, and creating simple, large grass batters or banks that can be mown with safety. This would see the need to bring in large quantities of filling material, but being close to the carpark and entrance road would not cause any major disruption. Would the club be able to charge companies to deposit materials for this project? Josh Lewis expressed his desire to connect the front tee to the back and this could be done in conjunction, but would require a pipe of sufficient size to deal with surface water coming down from the 18 th. Proposed plantings in the area of the old 17 th green could include a mixture of shrubs that would not create any shade issues for the new 16 th complex and larger plantings once past the 16 blue tee could include any local Eucalypts.

18 th The large pines down the RHS of the fairway are no doubt useful in stopping some balls from landing on the 17 th, however consideration could be given to the long term removal of these trees by planting Eucalypts nearby which once large enough would allow the removal of the pines and put an end to the problems caused by the large quantities of cones they produce. (This should be looked at as a long term strategy; perhaps 20 years). The large stately fig tree on the RHS is a landmark for the finishing hole and despite the evidence of root damage on the fairway, this tree should remain and could be enhanced by root pruning and mulching underneath the canopy. SUMMARY After a very comprehensive tour of the course with Josh Lewis it would seem that the most pressing issue would be the elimination of the current GUR areas of what once were bunkers. Consideration should be given to re-visiting the use of Bunkermat from Geofabrics; this product is proven and installation techniques have improved in recent years. Clubs that are currently using this product are now more often than not forgoing the use of any vertical lip of soil around the top of the wall, and using ample metal pins to secure the mat; what this does is eliminate the need to trim the bunker in a vertical action which usually leads to the cutting of the mat (this is evident in several bunkers at Sawtell). The work for the dole people could still be used as the most time consuming task when re-furbishing using Bunkermat is the placing of the steel pins which need to be at very close spacing s. Drainage both inside and outside each bunker is critical and Josh Lewis has a very good knowledge of what is required. As far as re-surfacing the greens using one of the new ultradwarf varieties, the current surfaces are in a more than acceptable condition and the disruption and expense of converting in a timely manner may be counter productive in the current circumstances. The fairways were also in very good order for this time of year, with the large areas of QLD blue couch particularly impressive, root pruning and installing drainage to the worst affected areas may be more prudent. As for conversion of the roughs to Zoysia grass; Zoysia is known to be quite slow to establish and common Buffalo would be a much easier conversion, however more drainage and extensions to concrete paths is probably going to help keep paying customers coming in during wet periods. Another pressing issue is the irrigations system and areas that need addressing are i) Complete mains supply to fairways ii) Complete remote control capability iii) Complete changeover to rainbird sprinkler

Golf NSW can provide a one off Club Support Grant of $3000 for a specific project of the clubs choosing, eg: the abovementioned irrigation issues, or turfing the swale LHS 2 nd green etc. CONCLUSION Sawtell Golf Club is a very presentable enjoyable test of golf. The condition of the course at the time of my visit was very good, and the club is very fortunate to have a young, enthusiastic and capable Super in Josh Lewis. Josh has already earned the respect of his fellow Supers in the area and they are only too happy to help wherever possible. This is a good position to be in, as it is in the best interest of all the clubs to be seen as a destination for visiting golfers as well as locals. Thanks to Alvin Kan for inviting me to Sawtell Golf Club and I wish all concerned the best for the future.
