1 UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS HER 103 LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA TELEPHONE: (213) FAX: (213) SPORTS INFORMATION OFFICE PAUL TIM TESSALONE, GOLDBERG, GOLF DIRECTOR SID FOR RELEASE: May 16, 2014 NO. 1 USC WOMEN S GOLF SET FOR NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS TITLE DEFENSE LOS ANGELES -- The No. 1 USC women s golf team, the defending NCAA champion and a winner of a school-record nine of its 12 tournaments this season while sporting the nation s top ranking all season, will look to complete its amazing year at the 2014 NCAA Championships, May 20-23, at the Tulsa (Okla.) C.C. The Trojans have won three NCAA titles and sport a national-best streak of eight consecutive NCAA top 5 finishes. Their programbest nine wins this season broke the previous record of seven set last year. USC is coming off a one-stroke win at the NCAA West Regional, which was its fifth straight regional title and NCAA record 10th overall. USC will tee off in Tuesday s opening NCAA Championships round with fellow regional winners UCLA and Vanderbilt beginning at 12 p.m. CT. The Trojans will also be paired with the Bruins and Commodores for their 7:30 a.m. start time on Wednesday. The Tulsa C.C. is a par 70 course over 6,194 yards. Live results will be available NCAA. com and the final two rounds will feature live streaming from Holes * Prior to this year, the Trojans had never won more than one event to start a season. This year s team won its first five events, including four in the fall, and used a different lineup in four of the five victories. Not until the final win at the Pac-12 Preview did the Trojans feature the lineup they used during their postseason run to the title last spring, which included seniors Sophia Popov and Rachel Morris, junior Doris Chen and sophomore Annie Park and Kyung Kim. The win streak ended at eight with a second-place finish at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate where the Trojans fell by six strokes to No. 2 UCLA. USC then won three more in a row before taking second again in its final regular-season event and tying for second at the Pac-12 Championships. USC won again at the NCAA West Regional. USC has used seven different lineups in its 12 events this year, but the Trojans have settled on the fivesome of Popov, Park, Chen, Kim and freshman Karen Chung, who will play for the third time in a row and the sixth time overall at the NCAA Championships. The quintet won the first three times it started together at the Stanford Intercollegiate, the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge and the SDSU Farms Invitational before tying for second at the Pac- 12s. It won for a fourth time in five tries at the NCAA West Regional. USC s eight-event win streak eclipsed the four consecutive wins it had to close the 2008 NCAA season. The Trojans have now won 12 of their past 15 outings, 15 of 19 and 16 of 21 dating back to the fall of last season. Of the five times USC did not win, it finished lower than second only once. As a point of comparison for USC s exploits, Arizona State won 11 consecutive events between the and seasons. That streak including the NCAA title to end the 1994 season and all 10 events in The Sun Devils won a combined 18 events between the and seasons. Duke won a combined 19 events during the (10) and (nine) seasons and 17 between (nine) and (eight) seasons. The Blue Devils won 15 between the (nine) and (six) seasons. USC NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY USC has won three NCAA titles -- spread out five years apart -- in 2003, 2008 and USC is one of only five schools with at least three NCAA team titles. Arizona State has seven, Duke has five while USC, San Jose State and UCLA have three. The Trojans finished 21 strokes better than Duke in 2013 (the biggest margin at the NCAA Championships since Arizona won by the same amount in 2000), six strokes ahead of UCLA in 2008 and were 15 strokes better than second-place Pepperdine in This is USC s 27th overall NCAA Championship final appearance and 17th in a row, the current streak all coming under 18th-year head coach Andrea Gaston. In addition to winning three titles, the Trojans have finished second four times (2012, 2010, 2006 and 1994) and also finished third in 2009 and 1986, fourth in 2007, 2000 and 1987, fifth in 1993 and tied for fifth in In fact, USC s combined 14 NCAA top 5 finishes trail only conference rival Arizona State (15) and are tied with UCLA for second The Trojans second-place finishes in 2010 (Purdue) and 2012 (Alabama) were by just one stroke... USC has won four NCAA individual titles, including Jennifer Rosales in 1998, Mikaela Parmlid in 2003 (in a one-hole playoff), Dewi Claire Schreefel in 2006 and Annie Park in USC s four individual titles are tied for second most with Arizona. Arizona State has five... In addition to its four individual champions, USC players have posted 10 other top five finishes. Jennifer Song (2009) was second, Paola Moreno (2007) tied for second, Irene Cho (2003), Candie Kung (2001) and Dana Arnold (1990) all tied for third, Jill McGill (1994) and Belen Mozo (2008) finished fourth, Rosales tied for fourth (1999) and Leila Chartrand (2000) and Song (2010) tied for fifth... The NCAA title in 2008 was USC s fourth consecutive tournament win at the time, a then-first in program history... USC had five All-Americans in 2008 for the first time in school history (Dewi Claire Schreefel, Paola Moreno, Belen Mozo, Stefanie Endstrasser, Lizette Salas) while all five of USC s finishers at the 2013 NCAAs finished in the top In 1998, Rosales was 9-under par after three rounds, tying for the best score in NCAA Championship history through three rounds... USC s best combined round at an NCAA Championship is 276, set in the second round in 2013 Troy s best individual round at an NCAA Championships is 66, carded by Jennifer Rosales during her title run in 1998 The Trojans finished at 19-under 1133 ( ) in its 2013 win, shattering the previous NCAA Championship record for most strokes under par, which was previously four (UCLA, 2004).

2 OVERVIEW Troy, under the guidance of three-time national coach of the year Andrea Gaston, returns all five players from last year s team that won the NCAA team title by a record 21 strokes, four of them All-Americans. Head Coach Andrea Gaston Andrea Gaston is in her 18th year as the Head Coach for USC women s golf and has led USC into the NCAA Championships final each of the past 17 years. One of the most successful coaches in the nation, she has guided USC to three national titles (2003, 2008, 2013), 10 NCAA regional championships and four Pac-12 crowns. Four Trojans (Jennifer Rosales, 1998, Mikaela Parmlid, 2003, Dewi Claire Schreefel, 2006, Annie Park, 2013) have won NCAA individual titles under her watch and three have won the Honda Award for women s golf player of the year (Parmlid in 2003, Irene Cho in 2006, Park in 2013). She is a threetime national coach of the year (2013, 2011, 2008). TOURNAMENT RECAPS Dale McNamara Fall Preview Sophomore Kyung Kim won her second career individual title with three straight rounds in the 60s while senior Sophia Popov joined her under par in the final round to lead the No. 1 and defending NCAA champion USC women s golf team to a come-frombehind victory at the 2013 Fall Preview to open the season. The Trojans, who finished the season by winning their final three events (all in the postseason), extended their victory streak to four with a combined 8-over 848 ( ) thanks in part to a 4-under final round that helped them erase a three-stroke second-round deficit. USC also won four events in a row to close out the 2008 season, which culminated with Troy s second NCAA team title. The win is also USC s seventh in its last eight starts dating back to last year. Oklahoma took second at 12-over 852 with Oklahoma State third (855) and Alabama and Duke tied for fourth (856). Kim, who led USC with six rounds in the 60s last year, became the first Trojan since Dewi Claire Schreefel in the fall of 2007 to go under 70 in all three rounds of an event, taking first at 6-under 204 ( ). Her three-round total is tied for the second lowest in school history, joining Schreefel s 204 at the aforementioned 2007 event (also a Fall Preview). Kim, who won last year at the Stanford Intercollegiate, was 1-over through seven holes in her final round before a birdie on 8 gave her a par front 9. She then birdied four holes on the back 9 without a bogey to get to 4-under for the day, tying her second-best round as a Trojan.

4 Windy City Collegiate Championship The No. 1 USC women s golf team overcame strong winds and a scorecard DQ to not only win its school-record fifth consecutive tournament but open a season with two straight wins for the first time as it captured the 2013 Windy City Collegiate Championship at the Northmoor C.C. in Highland Park, Ill. The Trojans five-event win streak that includes the 2013 national championship snaps the previous record of four that closed the 2008 season with an NCAA title. USC has also won eight of its past nine events. USC, led by sophomore Kyung Kim s 3-under 210 ( ) which was good for a tie for second, finished at 1-over 853 ( ), two better than Oklahoma (855) and four better than both Arizona and Stanford (857). The Trojans had built a 10-stroke lead midway through the final round and still led by eight as play finished. But sophomore Annie Park mistakenly signed for an incorrect card, disqualifying her 1-under round and forcing the Trojans to use their low round, which was a 5-over. Fortunately for the Trojans, Kim birdied two of her final three holes while junior Doris Chen and freshman Gabriella Then - whose 5-over was included in USC s final tally - both birded 18 to provide the necessary padding for the win. Stanford Intercollegiate The No. 1 USC women s golf team extended school records for most consecutive wins (six) and victories to start a season (three) as the defending NCAA champion dominated a strong field with three finishers in the top 5 to defend its title at the 2013 Stanford Intercollegiate at the Stanford (Calif.) G.C. The Trojans, led by senior Sophia Popov s 6-under 207 ( ), also set school records for lowest 18-, 36- and 54-hole totals along the way, finishing today at 21-under 831 ( ). USC s second round was a school-record, as was the total from the first two rounds (548) and the final tally of 831. USC held off a strong effort from rival and second-ranked UCLA, which finished second at 16-under 836 ( ). The Bruins secondround was four better than Troy s school-record setting 272 on Saturday. Washington was third at 1-under 851 while host Stanford was 3-over 855. USC, featuring its third different starting five in as many events, has now won 10 of its past 11 starts. Popov, seeking her school record sixth individual title, fell a stroke short of first but tied her collegiate best at 207, tied for seventh-best in school history. Her two opening rounds extended her Trojan career record of rounds in the 60s to 19. Sophomore Annie Park ( ) and freshman Karen Chung ( ) tied for third at 5-under 207. Park s final round was one off the school record, set by Kyung Kim (63) last season. Park s collegiate best featured a 4-under front nine with two birdies and an eagle on the par 4 9th hole and three more birdies on the back 9 without a bogey on the day. Chung, with three rounds in the 60s in her first two events, was 2-over on her front nine but came home at 1-under. Her tie for third complemented her tie for sixth in her debut in USC s previous event. Junior Doris Chen tied for 13th at even 213 ( ) while Kim, who posted a pair of top 2 finishes to open the season, tied for 23rd at 3-over 216 ( ). It was Chen s second straight top 13 finish as well. Pac-12 Preview Sophomore Annie Park and senior Sophia Popov each fired final round 2-under 71s to lead the No. 1 USC women s golf team to a come-from-behind victory as the Trojans extended their school-record win streak to seven on the final day of the Pac-12 Preview at the Nanea G.C. in Kailua Kona, Hawaii, on Nov. 5. The Trojans, whose four consecutive wins to start the season is also a school record, finished at a combined 15-under 861 ( ), leapfrogging second-round leader Washington and secondplace UCLA. The Bruins finished a stroke back of the Trojans at 14-under 862 while the Huskies took third at 7-under 869. USC s lineup of Park, Popov, senior Rachel Morris, junior Doris Chen and sophomore Kyung Kim marked the first time this season Head Coach Andrea Gaston employed the same starting five that won the 2013 NCAA title. Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge On a day when many tee shots went wide, fairway drives fell short and putts lipped out, the No. 1 USC women s golf team, cushioned by strong first and second rounds, held on to win its spring opener at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge at the Palos Verdes (Calif.) G.C. on Feb. 11 and extended its remarkable win streak to eight. In the process, sophomore Annie Park, who, like her team, was buoyed by a big lead, also recorded her schoolrecord tying fifth career win despite a string of five bogeys on the back 9. The Trojans opened play with a 14-stroke lead and overcame some drama near the end of the final round to still win by seven at 14-over 866 ( ) while hard-charging No. 3 Duke finished second at 21-over 873 ( ). The win was USC s third at the Northrop Grumman after titles in 2010 and 2011, though the Trojans also won the 2008 Pac-10 title on the same course. Park s individual crown is Troy s second at the event, joining Irene Cho s 2006 win. Park, who enjoyed a double-digit lead midway through the round thanks to a 3-under front 9, settled for a seven-stroke victory at 6-under 207 ( ). It was USC s best ever 54-hole total at the Palos Verdes G.C. (five better than Paola Moreno s 2008 Pac-10-winning total) and one off the tournament record set by LPGA star Lorena Ochoa in 2002 when she played for Arizona. The Trojans final tally of 866 was also a tournament record, besting Arizona s 2000 winning total by three strokes. USC secured the record despite a final round that was USC s highest since a 301 during the second round of last March s Bruin Wave Invitational. Senior Sophia Popov, whose team record of five career wins Park equaled, was USC s top finisher in the final round and tied for 10th at 4-over 217 ( ), her third top 10 in a row. Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate The No. 1 USC women s golf team, despite a trio of top 11 individual finishes, saw its school-record eight-tournament win streak come to end with a second-place at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate on Feb. 25. The defending NCAA champion Trojans, who finished the 2013 season with three straight wins and began the 2014 slate with five more victories, fell just short of No. 9, finishing at 15-under 849 ( ). No. 2 UCLA, which began the final round with a four-stroke lead, matched USC stroke-for-stroke Tuesday and even increased their lead slightly to win at 21-under 843 ( ). Sophomores Annie Park ( ) and Kyung Kim ( ) tied for eighth at 4-under 212 while senior Sophia Popov tied for 11th at 3-under 213 ( ). Freshmen Gabriella Then ( ) and Karen Chung ( ) tied for 27th at 2-over 218 while senior Rachel Morris, playing individually and not counting toward USC s team score, tied for 17th at even 216 ( ). Bruin Wave Invitational A week after its school-record and nation-long eight-tournament win streak was snapped, the No. 1 USC women s golf team - led by sophomore Kyung Kim s individual win and sophomore Annie Park and junior Doris Chen tying for second -- returned to the winner s circle, cruising to a 13-stroke victory at the Bruin Wave Invitational at the El Caballero C.C. in Tarzana, Calif., on March 4. The Trojans, who built a five-stroke lead after the 36-hole opener, quickly padded the cushion early in the final round and were never threatened, finishing at 1-under 863 ( ), 13 better than second-place Pepperdine and 23 better than No. 2 UCLA, which beat USC last week in New Orleans. The win was USC s sixth in seven starts this year, one off the school season-record seven USC pocketed last year en route to the 2013 NCAA title. Kim earned her third career collegiate title at 3-under 213 ( ), edging Park ( ) and Chen ( ), who finished at 2-under 214. Chen entered the final round with a one-stroke lead over Kim. Senior Sophia Popov took 13th at 6-over 222 ( ) while freshman Gabriella Then tied for 37th at 17- over 233 ( ). Kim wasn t at her sharpest in today s final round, though it was good enough for her second win this year, her third top 2 and her fourth top 8. She went out 2-under and came home at 3-over with four birdies on the day. Park almost caught Kim on the back 9 with a pair of birdies on 16 and 17. Park s final round is her school-record ninth in the 60s, breaking the mark shared by Jennifer Song (2010) and Irene Cho (2006). Park now has 14 for her career, tying her for third on USC s career chart. SDSU Farms Invitational No. 1 USC turned an eight-stroke deficit to start the round into a five-stroke lead nine holes in and then withstood late rallies by UCLA and Stanford to win its school-record-tying seventh event of the season while freshman Karen Chung pocketed her first career collegiate title to close out the SDSU Farms Invitational at the Farms C.C. in Rancho Sante Fe., Calif., on March 26. USC defended its SDSU Farms title from last year at 3-under 861 ( ), passing both Stanford ( ) and UCLA ( ) on the final day as the Pac-12 rivals each finished at par 864. The next closest finisher was Arizona State, which took fourth at 17-over. The win is USC s 10th in its last 11 tournaments, 13th in its last 15 and 14th in its last 17 dating back to last season. Chung won at 8-under 208 ( ), two better than second-place Lauren Kim of Stanford. Her USC career best final round included a personal best 29 on the front 9. The hot start included six birdies and an eagle on the first hole thanks to a 9-iron that trickled in from 126 yards out. She had one bogey against eight pars on the back 9. In addition to her first win, it was her third top 6 finish this year and it marked Troy s fourth individual title in eight outings. Liz Murphey Invitational No. 1 USC - behind victories by sophomore Kyung Kim and freshmen Gabriella Then and Karen Chung - defeated No. 5 Arkansas in the match play final of the Liz Murphey Invitational to win its school-record eighth tournament this season on April 6 at the UGA G.C. in Athens, Ga. The Trojans entered the weekend winners of seven of eight events this year -- all in 54-hole stroke play format. The eighth win came after a fourth-place finish in 18 rounds of stroke play Friday (with the top eight advancing to a winner s bracket) that preceded match play wins over Auburn

5 (3-1) and North Carolina State (3-1) and a win over Arkansas (3-2) in the final. Kim dominated her match over Razorback Gaby Lopez, taking a 4 up lead through five holes, going up 5 after seven holes and clinching it at 5 up after 14. Kim won twice in match play and was leading in her third match against North Carolina State when it was suspended on 15 after USC clinched its win. Chung never trailed in her win over Summer Roachell. She had a 2 up lead reduced to a tie after the seventh hole. But she regained the lead with a par on 9 and clinched the win after a birdie on 13 and pars on 14 and 15. She won all three matches this weekend. Silverado Showdown Senior Sophia Popov tied for sixth while sophomore Annie Park tied for ninth to lead the No. 1 USC women s golf team to second at the Silverado Showdown at the Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa, Calif., on April 15. The Trojans, who finished second for the second time this season to go with their eight victories, combined for a 10-over 874 ( ), 13 back of No. 11 Washington (3-under 861). USC, which played the event without junior All-American Doris Chen and sophomore All-American Kyung Kim, has still won eight of 10 this year and 11 of its past 13, 14 of 17 and 15 of 19. Troy s only other second-place this year came at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate, which UCLA won. The Trojans began the final round one back of the Huskies, but could not generate any momentum, quickly falling behind by five strokes. USC jockeyed for position with Northwestern most of the day as Washington pulled away. Popov tied for sixth at 1-under 215 ( ) for her sixth top 13 finish this year and seventh in the top 17. She was 3-over on the front and even on the back. Park tied for ninth at even 216 ( ) for her seventh straight top 11 finish and sixth in the top 9. She had three birdies against three bogeys during her round. Pac-12 Championships Junior Doris Chen finished third while sophomores Kyung Kim and Annie Park tied for seventh as No. 1 USC just missed defending its conference title, tying for second by one stroke on the final day of the 2014 Women s Golf Pac-12 Championships at the Trysting Tree G.C. in Corvallis, Ore., April 27. USC, which had won three of the past six conference tournaments, combined for a three-day 6-over 870 ( ), tied with host Arizona and one back of Stanford s 869. UCLA was fourth at 871 in what was a four-team race to the finish. The Trojans also finished second by a stroke in Troy has finished first or second in six of the past seven Pac-12 Championships after finishing no better than third between USC did earn five points in the Crosstown Gauntlet, the all-sport competition between the Trojans and the Bruins, by finishing one stroke better than UCLA. Points between men s and women s golf are annually awarded at the conference event to the higher finisher between the two schools. Chen, the 2012 Pac-12 champion, took third at 1-under 215 ( ) while Park ( ) and Kim ( ) finished at 4-over 220. Chen, who was four strokes out of first, had four birdies, including two on a 2-under back 9. Kim had a pair of birdies, one on a 1-under back 9 and Park had three birdies. NCAA West Regional No. 1 USC used a handful of birdies and key pars to erase a late deficit and win the NCAA West Region by one stroke on May 10 at the Tumble Creek Club at Suncadia Resort in Cle Elum, Wash., safely advancing to the NCAA finals. The Trojans, battling cold and windy weather, finished at 12-over 876 ( ), one better than second-place host Washington (877), which enjoyed a five-stroke lead on the back 9. Arizona State was third at 25-over 889. The Trojans win extends their season record to nine while also nailing down their NCAA best 10th regional win, including five in a row. 11 USC NCAA Individual Champions Jennifer Rosales 1998 Jennifer Rosales made her presence known in her 1998 freshman season by walking away with the individual title at the NCAA Championships in Madison, Wisc., where she shot a record-breaking 9-under par. In her sophomore season, Jennifer Rosales was the top Trojan golfer in all 10 tournaments for the season on her way to being named collegiate "Player of the Year." She is now a top player on the LPGA circuit. Mikaela Parmlid 2003 Mikaela Parmlid left behind a legacy at USC that will be tough to surpass. Besides winning the 2003 NCAA individual title at Purdue's Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex, the "Swedish Sensation" was also a two-time All-American firstteam selection and USC's first-ever winner of the Honda Award given to the nation's finest female collegiate golfer. Her other feats include Women of Troy standards for most wins in a season (4) and career (5). She has now moved on to the LPGA tour. Dewi Claire Schreefel 2006 An All-American as a freshman, Dewi Claire Schreefel fought to find her top form as a sophomore until late into the 2006 season. A sixth-place tie at the NCAA Central Regional catapulted Schreefel into the NCAA Championships. Solid first and second rounds kept her within reach of the leaders and a third-round 70 brought her to within three strokes. She took the lead halfway through the final round and held off a host of challengers for the NCAA title. Annie Park 2013 Annie Park completed one of the best seasons in women's collegiate golf history -- as a freshman -- with a six-stroke victory at the 2013 NCAA Championships at 10-under 278. She became just the second woman to sweep all three postseason events (conference, regional and NCAA) in the same season, which helped her tie USC's school record for wins on the season (four). She was named the WGCA and Pac-12 Golfer and Freshman of the Year and then won the Honda Sports Award for golf.
