4 W o m e n s G o l f M e d i a G u i d e 2002 Seminole Summer Golf Women s Western Open Seminole senior Kristin Tamulis and juniors Alison Curdt, Carrie Sordel and Katie Quinney played in the 102nd Women s Western Amateur Championship June 19-22, The Women s Western Golf Association is one of the oldest and most revered golf organizations in the United States. Tamulis, a contestant in the championship flight, also enjoyed an outstanding tournament as she advanced to the round of 32. Curdt was the top seed in the first flight and lost in a playoff to get to the championship flight. She won three of four matches during the tournament and was a finalist in her flight. Sordel and Quinney both played well in stroke play during the tournament. Women s North and South Championship Seminole senior Kristin Tamulis and junior Carrie Sordel competed in the 100th Women s North and South Amateur Championship at Pinehurst, June The North and South Amateur Championship is the longest consecutive-running amateur golf tournament in the United States. Originally named the United North and South Men s Championship, it was designed to draw golfers to a five-year old resort named Pinehurst, as well as foster relations between two regions still recovering from the Civil War. U.S. Open Seminole senior Kristin Tamulis played in the 57th United States Women s Open Championship at Prairie Dunes Country Club July 4-5, Tamulis was one of 15 amateurs (of 149 total players) who participated in the event. She earned her way into the field during a local qualifying tournament at the Naples (Fla.) Beach Hotel Golf Course and in two sectional qualifying rounds at the Country Club at Heathrow (Fla.). Tamulis recorded a three-over par 75 in the local qualifying tournament and shot a two-round total of 149 at the sectional qualifying tournament. The U.S Women s Open began in 1946 and is the longest running event currently on the LPGA Tour. It is one of the LPGA s four major championships. Tamulis realized the third best stroke improvement in the field during the second round of the event but did not make the cut as the field was pared down for the final two rounds of the most prestigious tournament in women s golf. Tamulis carded a five-over par 75 in the second round and finished in a tie for 135th with a two-round score of 158. She missed the cut by a mere 10 strokes. Tamulis played well in round two as she improved on her first round score by eight strokes. Only one other golfer, Emilee Klein of the United States, improved her second-round score by more than Tamulis. Klein shot a second round 71 after finishing with a score of 80 in Thursday s first round. Tamulis carded a first round 83. Tamulis finished the first major event of her career two strokes ahead of Hall-of-Famer Nancy Lopez. Lopez finished with a two-day total of 160. U.S. Amateur Open Senior Kristin Tamulis and juniors Alison Curdt and Katie Quinney played in the 2002 U.S. Women s Amateur Golf Championship at Sleepy Hollow Golf and Country Club in Scarborough, N.Y. Aug All three golfers earned the right to play in the event during sectional qualifying and will be playing in the event for the first time during their careers. The trio of Seminoles represented three of the 147 golfers in the combination stroke (36 holes) and match (six rounds) play format championship. Tamulis qualified July 19 at the Tequesta Country Club in Tequesta, Fla. She shot a 73 and finished in a tie for fourth place along with Quinney (Atlantic Beach, Fla.). Tamulis and Quinney were two of eight golfers that qualified for the U.S. Amateur from that site. Curdt (St. Louis, Mo.) was the first Seminole to qualify for the event as she shot a 74 and won a playoff against two other players at Blue Hills Country Club in Kansas City, Mo. July 15. Curdt finished the event in a tie for fourth and won the playoff round to earn one of the four spots from that site. Quinney has also enjoyed a successful season with a recent strong outing at the First Coast Women s Championship at the Raddison Ponce de Leon Golf and Conference Resort in St. Augustine, Fla. She led the event after the first round, was second after 36 holes and finished in second with a 54- hole total of 221. Quinney fell to Ellen Port in the first round of match play at the 102nd U.S. Women s Open at Sleepy Hollow Country Club. Quinney had advanced through the first two rounds of stroke play but was defeated 2-up by Port. Seminole teammates Kristin Tamulis and Alison Curdt weren t as fortunate as Quinney and did not survive the 64- player cut after two rounds of stroke play. Alison Curdt played in the 2002 U.S. Women s Amateur. Katie Quinney advances to match play at the 2002 U.S. Women s Amateur. Summer 2002 Florida State Women s Golf 29
