Mayflower Junior Archers From the Editor Congratulations! It s outdoor season again! Junior News At the recent Annual General Meeting, Nicole Scorah was elected as your Junior Captain for the forthcoming year. We wish her good luck in her duties. Congratulations also to: Katie Ward as Best Girl and Aaron Gourley as Best Boy. Read more about it inside these pages. Issue No. 4 Inside this issue: Achievements 2 Junior Captain and Club Diary 3 Tournament Diary 4 FITA Award scheme 5 Andy Harris League Individual results Andy Harris League Final placings November Challenge July Nationals National Awards April Back page Firstly, let us welcome all out new members to the club. We think we are a friendly club with a lot going on for everybody and will eventually get around to knowing all of you in the near future. It will make a nice change to start getting our distance shooting back on form, but do gradually build up the distances again in order to get those groups back. Steve has got the usual monthly club rounds organised and there are plenty of Open tournaments to enter. Also we wish our teams the best of luck and good shooting in the forthcoming Havering Youth Games and West Essex Junior Invitation shoot. Happy shooting, Roger Mayflower Archers, 1988 to 2008 On 28th June we are hosting a 20th Anniversary open shoot when we will be inviting other clubs to join us. We are shooting Albion and Windsor rounds. Entry is free, but if you wish to join in, entries must be made on the official entry form available at Junior club on Saturday or from Steve, Roger or the club website. Also, all Mayflower members are entitled to a commemorative badge. There is no cost for this, but if you wish to own your share of this rare piece of history, they are available from Steve at Junior club afternoons.
Achievements Well done to our team! At this year s annual Ken Gray Memorial tournament, the Mayflower team secured 3rd place medals and the Ashes trophy. This event is hosted by Mayflower Archers and offers a Portsmouth round for invited teams of relatively new archers. It often amazes so many team managers how accuracy improves when the round is complete and the World Famous balloon shot begins. Top scorers for Mayflower were Aaron Gourley and Alex Croft both scoring 456 with a creditable return from the rest of the team. At least they all seemed to enjoy themselves, which is the whole point of the tournament. Harry Abbott Enters Rayleigh Town s Open Portsmouth and wins Gold medal with a score of 539 with his compound bow. Not content with that, enters Essex County FITA 25 and wins his class again. Well done Harry! Alastair Humphreys Also enters Rayleigh Town Open Portsmouth and brings home a Bronze medal shooting Barebow. Well done Alastair! Any more news you didn t tell me about? Contact Roger Glover on or mail me at re.glover@btopenworld.com Joe Elvidge On a snowy April morning, Joe and his Mum, Rachel travelled to Bedfordshire with their Mongolian Bows to shoot the Siege of Edlesborough. In doing so, managed to devastate the enemy and their livestock. Well done to you both, but I thought it was a longbow shoot. No wonder you both won your class. Full report on and it s well worth reading. Stop Press! Alastair Humphreys again, good lad. Enters a 2 day FITA 24 mixed Field shoot at Panther Bowhunters, wins his class using Traditional style bow and claims a county record. Note: that s 24 targets each day, 12 marked distances and 12 unmarked, metre distance shot through some lovely woods. Why wasn t I there? Report on Page 2
Junior Captain You may have read on the first page that Nicole Scorah is the new Junior Captain. This is not a new role as we have always had a captain, but as a trial, Nicole will take on a slightly different duties since in the past, we have not had a junior sub-committee. Nicole intends to provide support for fellow junior archers, assist in developing skills and knowledge in the junior club, be enthusiastic and helpful, represent and provide leadership by example. This may sound like a very responsible job, but Nicole is enthusiastic and is already doing some of this. As part of her duties, Nicole will also represent all the juniors at junior sub-committee meetings and will be assisted by Lewis Jones. Lewis also has club and tournament experience. Both will attend these meetings where possible to tell all those older people what the juniors really want from the club. So, if you have any ideas, comments or suggestions on how you would like Mayflower juniors organised, please discuss it with Nicole, Lewis or both and they will tell us. Also you can tell one of us anyway. We wish them both every success in their duties. Club Diary The Junior Club will meet at Barleylands every Saturday afternoon between 2 pm and 4 pm from the beginning of April to the end of September except 28th June for our 20 th Anniversary event and 13th Sept for the Steam Rally weekend. On the following dates, you are invited to join us in the following tournament rounds. There is no compulsion to join these and you can shoot alongside, but they are intended to give our newer members the opportunity to gain valuable tournament experience. 26 th April Club Warwick Rounds, Barleylands 2.00 pm Assembly 17 th May Club Short Metrics, Barleylands 1.00 pm Assembly 28 th June Club 20 th Anniversary Tournament Albion and Windsor rounds To join in on this event you must enter formally on the official entry form 12 th July July National postal Rounds, Barleylands 1.00 pm Assembly 19 th July July National postal Rounds, Barleylands 1.00 pm Assembly 20 th Sept Club Short Metrics, Barleylands 1.00 pm Assembly 27 th Sept Club Warwick rounds, Barleylands 2.00 pm Assembly To join in on any of these rounds, please notify Steve Fenton or Roger Glover one week before the event in order that we can prepare a Target List and get your score sheet printed. If you ve never entered a tournament before, it is advisable to seek advice before completing the entry form. In either case, please seek advice from any member of the Junior Team who will be willing to answer any questions and may be able to supply you with a fact sheet. Best Boy and best Girl These are awarded annually for the two juniors who the club committee consider have been a good example, entered tournaments and generally shown enthusiasm for the sport. Both of them frequently entered county and regional competitions and Kate even travelled to Lilleshall for the Junior National Outdoor Championships and both of them have enjoyed themselves in doing so. Keep up the good work and keep enjoying the sport. Mayflower at SCAS Champs Page 4
FITA Beginner s Awards. Feather & Arrow Mayflower Archery Club will be introducing this scheme to help with our new and existing juniors and all beginners, including adults, to help with their development in archery. The FITA Beginner s Award Scheme has been designed to allow beginners in Archery to measure their progress against set standards. Their progress should be encouraged by the clubs and rewarded by the winning of FITA Feather and Arrow pins. The awards are based on three (3) attainments. Performance. Skill. Knowledge & Know How. The awards are split into two categories: 1) FEATHER AWARDS, for the youngest beginners, under 12 years of age and some disabled beginners. (It is up to the club coach to decide on an archer s eligibility). 2) ARROW AWARDS, these are for pre-teenagers, teenagers and adults. (The pre- teenagers will usually have already gained their feather awards). The FITA Beginner s Award Scheme is designed to reward the beginner at the various stages of their development, from shooting at very short distances 6-10 metres, which is dependent on age, to the shortest indoor distance 18 m and even further to near 30m. The size of the target faces will also vary, for feather awards 80 cm spot face or 40 cm face counting hits only, for arrow awards 80 cm full face using conventional FITA scoring. Feather Award Arrow Award To all juniors and adults wishing to apply for this training program please contact David Scorah by scorah1@btinternet.com Or Tel: Page 5

Well done. However, the more rounds you shoot, the higher scores you get. Top scoring boy overall was Ben Brown of Rayleigh with 2764 and top scoring girl was Sophie Cole of Chelmsford Tudor Rose with Mind you, it does help that Rayleigh only got 1 bye to our 2 byes and Sophie Cole was able to shoot most of the rounds enabling them to get higher total scores. Well done everybody. A creditable performance by our Juniors in their first year in this indoor league. We were entered into division 4 and despite being drawn against some senior teams in the early matches, we managed to finish in 4th place. Well done to all who took part and we look forward to good return next year. Many thanks to Martin Vidgeon-Hart who co-ordinated the Mayflower entries and did most of the scoring work. Final places are given on the next page and full results and tables are available from Martin if you really, really need them. At the AGM At the AGM Page 6

GNAS November Challenge, postal tournament Results With a field of around 400 archers with and some classes having 70 to 100 entrants, Mayflower juniors all managed mid table places. Junior scores will be submitted to GNAS by post and entered into the tournament. Normally over 600 juniors enter this and Mayflower have done well in the past. Full details will be posted on the club notice board nearer the time, but in the meanwhile, get your distance scores accurately. JAWS awards Annually, the junior committee at GNAS run a junior awards scheme (jaws). Trophies are given for the winners and runners up claiming the most points in the scheme collected throughout the year. Points are claimed for entering Open, County, Regional and National events and for claiming Rose and FITA awards or attaining a Six Gold End. The form is a pain to complete, but gives you incentive to achieve. Full details in Archery UK, or see Steve or Roger.
