Captains Welcome Welcome to our second edition of the Stackstown Golf Club Newsletter. Thank you, our valued members, for your positive feedback on this initiative. We also welcome the many suggestions and inputs which our editorial team has received over the past weeks. Please keep them coming.! It has been an extremely busy few weeks in the Club with numerous events taking place as well as plenty of action from our teams! As always we want to thank all our club members for their participation. While this year is particularly challenging, the teams are bringing in plenty of success to Stackstown. 6 Joker Update Lady Captain Mary s prize giving took place in Ballinteer St John s GAA Club on Saturday 17th June. The event was very well attended. As a prelude the Joker Team made a presentation to our latest winner, no other than our popular lady member Margot Hogan. On the 51st draw (weeks) of the latest (2nd) competition Margot s lucky number 35 was drawn and at long last Fred the joker popped out so she receives a sizable cheque for 6,275 which was a TITANIC jackpot. Well done Margot. All funds collected go towards Course Development Projects so please keep supporting and perhaps you will be luck enough to win the next jackpot. 3rd draw commences Saturday 24th June for a startup jackpot of 500. Margot Hogan receiving her cheque from Ian McDonald
Ready Golf Ready golf is a commonly used term which indicates that players should play when they are ready to do so, rather than adhering strictly to the farthest from the hole plays first stipulation in the Rules of Golf. Ready golf is not appropriate in match play due to the strategy involved between opponents and the need to have a set method for determining which player plays first. However, in stroke play formats it is only the act of agreeing to play out of turn to give one of the players an advantage that is prohibited. On this basis, it is permissible for administrators to encourage ready golf in stroke play, and there is strong evidence to suggest that playing ready golf does improve the pace of play. For example, in a survey of Australian golf clubs conducted by Golf Australia, 94% of clubs that had promoted ready golf to their members enjoyed some degree of success in improving pace of play, with 25% stating that they had achieved 'satisfying success'. When ready golf is being encouraged, players have to act sensibly to ensure that playing out of turn does not endanger other players. The term ready golf has been adopted by many as a catch-all phrase for a number of actions that separately and collectively can improve pace of play. There is no official definition of the term, but examples of ready golf in action are: Hitting a shot when safe to do so if a player farther away faces a challenging shot and is taking time to assess their options Shorter hitters playing first from the tee or fairway if longer hitters have to wait Hitting a tee shot if the person with the honour is delayed in being ready to play Hitting a shot before helping someone to look for a lost ball Putting out even if it means standing close to someone else s line Hitting a shot if a person who has just played from a greenside bunker is still farthest from the hole but is delayed due to raking the bunker When a player s ball has gone over the back of a green, any player closer to the hole but chipping from the front of the green should play while the other player is having to walk to their ball and assess their shot Marking scores upon immediate arrival at the next tee, except that the first player to tee off marks their card immediately after teeing off
Juvenile Update We had a very successful Taster Day for Juveniles where 30 children attended. From that group 26 have moved on to take up lessons in the Get into Golf Programme. We had 4 girls playing in the 9 hole Lady Captains Prize and they played great golf and had a lovely day. The 4 girls attended the prize giving with their parents and enjoyed the evening. A few of our Junior Girls play on Tuesday and practice on other days. They have upcoming matches in the Dick Walsh Trophy and the Elm Park Trophy. It is great to see the 13 year olds so keen to improve their golf lets hope they continue throughout the summer. With school holidays approaching for the primary school girls and boys we will need helpers on Thursday mornings when we have the tee from 8 am to 10 am. Are there any parents or members that can help us out? If we could get members to commit to one Thursday over the summer this would help us out greatly. Lessons continue on Saturday mornings twice a month which are posted on the Website under Juveniles, Juvenile News parents please check the website regularly. Remember if you or your company are in a position to sponsor juvenile tops please let us know. Please contact Mary Brennan and John Lavelle Junior co-ordinators
SIGs (Stay in Golf) GIGs (Get into Golf) From a GIG to a SIG That Was the Year that Was! It is hard to believe that a year has passed since the GIGs of 2016, now the SIGs of 2017, all met for the very first time in Stackstown. To mark the occasion, the SIGs went out to celebrate their anniversary, with a dinner at the Eden Restaurant, South William Street. We are really missing our get-togethers in the clubhouse, so it was great to have everyone together to celebrate this milestone. The GIGs/SIGs/RIGs anniversary dinner is very likely to become an annual event. Looking back on the year, a lot has been achieved. Starting off playing 4 holes (and taking 3 hours to do it!), and having our own competition every Tuesday, we slowly progressed to 7 holes, then 9 holes. At the time, 9 holes seemed like it was taking an eternity to play and was more than enough, now it feels like we are only getting started! We then moved on to 12 holes and are now up to playing 14, with some GIGs even playing regular 18 holes. Along the road of all this progression, was the initial false sense of security in playing scrambles, where some of us thought we were scoring really well - until we played singles where only our own score counted! That was a shock to the system. However, we are getting used to it and the progress of all over the year is very plain to see. Milestones The Stackstown Babes musical debut at the Lady Captains dinner last year The Foursomes competition with the Professionals as they are referred to (thanks to the Lady members that gave up their time) Four of the SIGS (Janice Edwards, Frances McEvoy, Mary Connolly and Beirne Geoghegan) win the Ladies Section of the May Bank Holiday Last but certainly not least Susanne Cummings hole in one on the 10th. A remarkable achievement from someone who has only been playing golf for one year All in all it has been a great year, the camaraderie amongst the SIGs is exceptional and we have all made many new friends, it is a pleasure to play a round of golf with any one of them. Our anniversary event was a great night of chat and fun, which was finished off with Mary Jo s Tesiration of Drindercella a fairy tale that has to be heard to be believed!! Who knows, perhaps in 2026 we will be looking back at this year saying Do you remember how difficult we found it playing 14 hole singles, and now everyone of us, with handicaps of less than 5, can play 18 holes in 30 minutes, and have all scored at least one hole-in-one (Susanne got two!)!!
Thought of the day!
