The City of Long Beach, through its Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine, allow the teams to use an area at the back of the driving range at El Dorado Park Golf Course for the 49er Golf Practice Facility. American Golf Corporation maintains the 49er Golf Practice Facility and has donated well over $50,000 in cash and services to the Long Beach State golf teams during the past 16 years. 2 MICKEY YOKOI Head Coach Third Year UCLA, 1997 On December 5, Yokoi became the 10th head coach of the men s golf program at Long Beach State after serving as associate head coach at Arizona State. We welcome Mickey and his family to Long Beach State, LBSU Director of Athletics Vic Cegles said. Mickey is an experienced coach and teacher who knows what it takes to win tournaments and championships at the highest level. He will provide great leadership in our pursuit of a Top 25 and nationally recognized program. Yokoi has been involved with both men s and women s golf programs at ASU for the past 14 years. Yokoi served as associate head coach of the men s golf team, helping the Sun Devils to five Pacific-10 Conference titles and four regional championships the last nine seasons. He coached several top players, including 2000 U.S. Amateur Champion Jeff Quinney, two-time English Amateur Champion Paul Casey, 2001 U.S. Public Links Champion Chez Reavie, 2003 NCAA Champion Alejandro Canizares and 2009 European Amateur Champion Stephen Gross. Prior to his stint as associate head coach with the men s golf program at ASU, Yokoi served as the Sun Devils head women s golf coach from Yokoi guided the women s team to a third-place finish and individual medalist at the 2002 Pac-10 Championships. ASU also recorded the lowest stroke average in the country for the fall season. Yokoi first joined the Sun Devil men s program in 1997, serving as an assistant for five seasons before taking the reigns of the women s golf team. Before joining ASU, Yokoi oversaw all golf operations as a head golf professional at the Country Club of the North in Dayton, Ohio, from and assisted the head professional from He also served as the vice chairman of the Children s Medical Center LPGA Tour Event in Yokoi was a four-year letterwinner at UCLA, helping the Bruins to the Pac- 10 Championship in 1982 with teammates Corey Pavin and Steve Pate. While at UCLA, Yokoi earned All-America and All Pac-10 honors. Yokoi graduated from UCLA in 1997 with a degree in psychology. After leaving UCLA, Yokoi played on the Asian Tour, the Canadian and Australian PGA Tours and the PGA Hogan Tour. Yokoi and his wife Carole, have two children, son, Justin and daughter, Alyssa.
