FADE IN: INT. COATES RESIDENCE: BEDROOM - EARLY MORNING OVERHEAD, LOOKING DOWN ON an older MAN and WOMAN. The room is dark. The sun hasn t yet risen. The MAN is awake, staring at the ceiling, his hands folded across his chest. This is SHERIFF COATES. Beside him is MARTHA. Martha doesn t stir. Mm. He squints, twiddles his thumbs. Silence. (CONT D) Don t feel different. (CONT D) Thought it d feel different. Martha reaches her arm over Joe Bob s chest, eyes still closed. She GRUNTS. Joe Bob shrugs with eyebrows only. (CONT D) Just thought I d feel different. Martha opens her eyes and pushes herself up slightly. MARTHA I ve been seventy for five years now, so don t you start complainin. She drops back down, eyes close. MARTHA (CONT D) What part of happy birthday don t you get? Well.. Martha turns over.
2. MARTHA And do not forget to get that casserole dish back from Ruth. I need it for tonight. The one with the roses on it? MARTHA (through pillow) Senile in your old age, huh? Joe Bob breathes in deeply, shakes his head and smiles. CUT TO: INT. POLICE STATION - MORNING Joe Bob sits at his desk in full Sheriff uniform, his white Stetson lays on his desk. A landline phone sits in front of him. He holds the receiver in his hand, with his other he dials. After a moment, he places the phone to his ear and waits. Finally, he squints, SIGHS. Ruth, it s Joe. Martha s cookin up a storm for my, uh.. 70th.. Well. She needs that casserole dish though, so just let me know when you get this and I ll swing on by and pick it up. If I m not at the station just leave a message with Lu, she ll radio me. Bye now. He hangs up, rubs his chin. CUT TO: INT. POLICE CRUISER - DAY Joe Bob drives slowly through his small town. He has the walkie to his mouth. (to walkie) Who else did you invite, Quintana? The Poley s?
3. Joe Bob smiles. A phone RINGS. MARTHA (V.O.) (on walkie) Do I hear somebody being ungrateful? Is that what I hear? (to walkie) Well. Joe Bob quickly glances down, picks up his cellphone from the cup holder. He raises it to his mouth, clicking the button for speaker phone. (CONT D) Joe here. Why isn t your walkie on the right channel? Joe Bob s lips tighten. Well, I m talkin to Martha on the walkie-- Sheriff, you have a cell phone. Call her on the cell phone. But Martha doesn t like the cell phone, she says it gets too garbled and she can t hear-- Well tell Martha the walkie is for police business only.
4. MARTHA (V.O.) (on walkie) Well, I say this is Police Business, since my husband is the Sheriff of this county. A beat. Joe Bob stays out of it. Lu audibly SIGHS. Hi Martha. MARTHA (V.O.) (on walkie) Hi Lu. Well, look, I just got a call in. Who from? It s Karen Stone. There s a rattlesnake on her front porch and Vic s not moving. He s dead? Lu SIGHS again. LOUD. A muscle. He won t move a muscle. A beat. Joe Bob chews his cheek. Joe Bob SIGHS. Any calls from Ruth Morris? LU (O.S.) Nada.
5. I ll head over. It s on the way to the Morris anyways, gotta get that casserole dish. MARTHA (V.O.) (on walkie) Atta boy. Joe Bob smiles, rolls his eyes. (away from the phone) Now, just you calm down Karen. EXT. STONE HOME - DAY SHING! Joe Bob stands in the dead grass of the front yard, a shovel in his hands. He raises it over his head again, the blade pointing toward the ground. He s sweating bullets. A rattlesnake is heard RATTLING. Behind him, KAREN STONE, stands with her hands on her hips. Beside her, VIC, a tall thin, mustached man, sits rhythmically rocking back and forth in a rocking chair. KAREN It dead yet? Joe Bob glances back quickly, then turns back to the snake. I ain t touched it. Joe Bob moves to strike. VIC I d shoot it. He stops, turns again, quickly glancing. Vic, you want to come down here and help, then? Silence. Vic keeps rocking. Joe Bob shakes his head and raises the shovel to strike again.
6. Joe Bob grimaces. VIC If ya d shoot it, it d be dead already. KAREN Maybe you ought to shoot it, Joe? Save yourself some trouble? VIC Karen knows. Joe Bob waits, breathing in. Sweat drips down his nose. VIC (CONT D) Just shoot it. Joe Bob finally exhales, grits his teeth, heaves down with the shovel and looks down with satisfaction. Death rattle, then silence. Joe Bob steps away from the shovel, now standing freely on it s own, embedded in the ground. Well. Silence except for the rocking chair squeaking as it moves back and forth. ANGLE ON KAREN AND VIC KAREN But.. Why didn t he shoot it?
