PAGE 10 Sunday, February 2, 2014 DAILY RACING FORM DRF.COM/BREEDING PRINCE OF THE EMPIRE JOHN P. SPARKMAN By definition, it is all but impossible for a filly sire to become an important sire of sires. Future sires are almost invariably culled from among outstanding Grade 1-winning sons of top sires, since they are the horses who receive the best these days, sometimes the only opportunities at stud. Nine out of the 11 Grade 1 winners sired by Empire Maker, the leading sire by North American earnings in 2012, are fillies, so it is encouraging that his first male Grade 1 winner, Pioneerof the Nile, has sired a promising colt in his first crop. Pioneerof the Nile s son Cairo Prince was an impressive winner of the Grade 2 Holy Bull Stakes on Jan. 25 at Gulfstream Park and ranks among the winter-book favorites for the 2014 Kentucky Derby. Empire Maker, the winner of the 2003 Belmont Stakes, established his reputation as a filly sire during the latter part of the previous decade, as four female Grade 1 winners (Acoma, Country Star, Icon Project, and Mushka) emerged from his first crop, beginning with Country Star s win in the Alcibiades in Mushka won a Grade 2 stakes in 2007, and Acoma picked up her first of seven career graded stakes wins in May 2008, with two more to come that fall. By then, Empire Maker s second-crop son Pioneerof the Nile had started to make headlines as a leading 2-year-old. Bred in Kentucky by his owner Ahmed Zayat s Zayat Stables, Pioneerof the Nile is the sixth foal of his stakes-winning dam, Star of Goshen, by Lord At War, a mare Zayat acquired privately in foal to Empire Maker in Zayat had paid $680,000 for Star of Goshen s fourth foal, the Gone West colt Forefathers, at the 2005 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale of selected yearlings, and the speedy colt had placed in the Grade 2 Swale Stakes, Grade 2 Jerome Handicap, Grade 3 Bold Ruler Handicap, and Bergen County Barbara D. Livingston Cairo Prince and jockey Luis Saez win the Grade 2 Holy Bull Stakes on Jan. 25. Stakes in Zayat s blue and yellow silks. Bred to stay any distance American racehorses are asked to run, Pioneerof the Nile made his debut in a 1 1/16-mile maiden race on Saratoga s turf course on Aug. 4, 2008, but was trapped on the rail throughout and finished fourth. He made amends in his second start three weeks later, rallying from well off the pace to beat Lime Rickey by a length over the same course. Trainer Bill Mott, who trained Pioneerof the Nile for his first four starts before Bob Baffert took over, clearly thought a lot of the colt, and threw him in at the deep end in the Grade 1 Breeders Futurity at Keeneland in his third start. Pioneerof the Nile ran with credit, rallying from well off the pace to finish third behind winner Square Eddie Continued on page 12

Pioneerof the Nile ran even better in the Breeders Cup Juvenile, though it did not show on paper. No horse could keep up with the winner, Midshipman, but Pioneerof the Nile was always in the chasing pack and finished fifth, beaten only 2 3/4 lengths by the winner and 1 1/2 lengths by runner-up Square Eddie. Transferred to Baffert after the Juvenile, Pioneerof the Nile continued his improvement in his final juvenile start, the Grade 1 CashCall Futurity, rallying from just off the pace and gamely holding off the closing bid of I Want Revenge to win by a nose. With Midshipman off to Dubai for the winter, Pioneerof the Nile had established himself as the primary Californiabased contender for the 2009 Kentucky Derby, and he dominated Santa Anita s prep races on what was then its Pro-Ride synthetic main track, winning the Grade 2 Robert B. Lewis, Grade 2 San Felipe, and Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby in succession. All of his races, however, had been on either turf or synthetic, which cast doubt on his credentials for the Derby over Churchill s dirt oval. After the expected favorite, I Want Revenge, was scratched the morning of the race, the 2009 Kentucky Derby was viewed as wide open, and Pioneerof the Nile started a lukewarm third choice at 6-1 behind Louisiana Derby winner Friesan Fire and Florida Derby runner-up Dunkirk. Well placed outside the early leaders by Garrett Gomez, Pioneerof the Nile put his head in front briefly between calls in upper stretch but had no answer for the sprint along the rail that Calvin Borel conjured from Mine That Bird over a sloppy track. Pioneerof the Nile held on to finish second in front of the closing Musket Man and Papa Clem. Pioneerof the Nile, the second betting choice behind sensational Kentucky Oaks winner Rachel Alexandra in the Preakness two weeks later, beat a hasty retreat after the first six furlongs and was eased in the stretch, finishing 11th. A few weeks later, it was announced that Pioneerof the Nile would be retired to stud after suffering a soft-tissue injury during a routine workout. Retired to Vinery in Kentucky in 2010, Pioneerof the Nile was one of the best colts of a generation totally dominated by the filly Rachel Alexandra. His first crop of 94 foals showed sufficient promise last year to place him second on the freshman sire list by earnings behind Dunkirk. Pioneerof the Nile s son River Dancer (out of Clever Actress, by Theatrical) Pioneerof the Nile 06 CAIRO PRINCE Gray or Roan Colt Foaled Feb. 17, 2011 Holy Bubbette 00 Empire Maker 00 Star of Goshen 94 Holy Bull 91 Juliac 83 showed potential first, running second in the Grade 2 With Anticipation Stakes at Saratoga, but the star from the moment he set foot on the track was Cairo Prince. Bred in Kentucky by Richard and Katherine Elam, Cairo Prince sold first as a short yearling for $200,000 to Vinery Bloodstock and Mandy Pope s Whisper Hill Farm at the 2012 Keeneland January sale of horses of all ages. Pinhooked to the 2012 Keeneland September yearling sale, he was purchased for $250,000 by agent Steve Shahinian on behalf of Namcook Stables. Racing for Namcook Stables, Paul Braverman, Harvey Clarke, and Craig Robertson III, Cairo Prince easily won his first start at Belmont Park in October, followed quickly by a victory in the Grade 2 Nashua Stakes. Cairo Prince battled the length of the stretch with Honor Code in the Grade 2 Remsen but finished second by a nose in his final juvenile start. His 5 3/4-length romp in the Holy Bull was his first start this year. Cairo Prince is the fourth foal and third stakes horse out of the good stakes winner Holy Bubbette, by Holy Bull. Bred and raced by Richard Elam, Holy Bubbette won six of 13 starts at 3 and 4, including the 2003 Dixie Miss Stakes at Louisiana Downs and the 2004 Whimsical Stakes at Woodbine, and placed in the Grade 3 Chaposa Springs Handicap at Calder in Holy Bubbette s second foal, Nonna Mia, by Empire Maker, placed in three stakes, including the Grade 1 Frizette in Holy Bubbette s third foal, Holdin Bullets, by Ghostzapper, ran third in the 2011 Breeders Cup Juvenile Sprint. Unbridled 87 Toussaud 89 Lord At War 80 Castle Eight 84 Great Above 72 Sharon Brown 80 Accipiter 71 Juliet 66 Fappiano 77 Gana Facil 81 El Gran Senor 81 Image of Reality 76 General 74 Luna de Miel 74 Key to the Kingdom 70 Her Native 73 Minnesota Mac 64 Ta Wee 66 Al Hattab 66 Agathea s Dawn 70 Damascus 64 Kingsland 65 Nearctic 54 Hop n Skip 62 Holy Bubbette is a half-sister to another good filly in Sum Runner, by Summing, the winner of the Grade 2 Forward Gal Stakes in Their half-sister Ms Louisett, by Siphon, ran third in the Grade 1 Oak Leaf. Cairo Prince s second dam, Juliac, by Accipiter, was unplaced in her only start but was a half-sister to Marauding, by Warfare, the winner of the Grade 3 Oil Capitol Handicap. The family first rose to prominence in the 1920s with the advent of the great Sarazen, by High Time, a son of Cairo Prince s eighth dam, and was developed further in the 1930s and 1940s by Alfred G. Vanderbilt. Vanderbilt bred champion Next Move, by Bull Lea, as well as the top-class runner Sometime Thing, by Discovery, and Sea-Change, by Count Fleet, a modest runner who is the fourth dam of the immortal Miesque. Cairo Prince is, of course, a long way from attaining that kind of stature, but he has made his sire a rather hot commodity on the stallion market. A racy, correct, powerful horse, perhaps slightly flat through the knee, Pioneerof the Nile is slightly smaller and more compact than his sire but resembles Empire Maker in his overall look. When Empire Maker was unexpectedly exported to Japan in 2011, it seemed very unlikely that he would do much to extend the male line of his sire, Unbridled, in the United States. With Pioneerof the Nile and his other male Grade 1 winner, Bodemeister, now both covering mares at WinStar Farm, Empire Maker s prospects as a sire of sires now look far more promising.

DRF.COM/BREEDING DAILY RACING FORM Sunday, February 2, 2014 PAGE 13 FENCING CRUCIAL FOR FARM SAFETY, VALUE Four-plank fencing costs more for materials and installation but is safer for horses and popular with farms. Barbara D. Livingston By Joe Nevills The first impression that a farm gives to its visitors is not the gates that welcome them to the property but often the fences that line roads on the drive to get there. Those fences have a dual purpose, not only keeping the horses in their confines but serving as the roadside advertisement of a farm s attention to detail, safety, and upkeep. The quality of a farm s fencing also can affect its property value. Fencing is important, said Bill Bell, an agent for Justice Real Estate, a prominent realtor of Thoroughbred farms in Lexington, Ky. The horses are going to injure themselves if there is any possible way. They ll figure out a way to hurt themselves, so you want to try to make things as safe for them as you can, and good fencing is important. The most common form of fencing found on Central Kentucky farms is fourpanel wooden plank. The types of wood used vary from oak, pine, and poplar to imported wood, which tends to be weaker than its domestic counterpart. Gary Hardin, farm services manager and maintenance supervisor at the Thoroughbred Center in Lexington, said that oak plank fences are the standard among commercial operations. The Thoroughbred Center offers fence construction among many farm project services, and oak fencing is the least-expensive option the company offers. For farm owners looking to build on a budget, Hardin said one way to do so is to install three-panel fences instead of four panels, thus cutting costs on materials and man-hours putting up the fence. However, a three-panel fence at the same height leaves more room between the boards for horses to potentially get themselves caught. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Hardin said that selecting quality wood and using proper nails are facets of fence installation that should not be bargainshopped. You shouldn t go with straight-shank nails, he said. You should have the nails with the shanks on them or the twist type. They hold better. You can always cut corners if you want to, but those types of things help secure the boards for a longer period of time. However, Hardin said the most important thing farm owners can do to prolong the life of their wooden fences is to ensure they are properly painted, which protects them from the elements. Most farms use black acrylic paint. It is typically the least-expensive option per gallon when compared with asphalt or white paint, but Hardin said it might require more long-term attention. A lot of times, when you drive around the farm areas, you ll see a lot of [fences] are in desperate need of being painted, Hardin said. Most of your black paints will last up to about three years. Anything over that, you re starting to cause damage Continued on page 15

DRF.COM/BREEDING DAILY RACING FORM Sunday, February 2, 2014 PAGE 15 Continued from page 13 to them because water and moisture and some light is going to start getting to your wood and have it start to deteriorate. White paint should be painted every four to five years. Another popular option is wire mesh fencing, often with a plank at the top. While slightly more expensive than planks alone, wire mesh offers its own benefits. It looks nice from the road, it s very secure with your horses, it keeps their legs from getting stuck between the fence as they may with a traditional fence, Hardin said. You usually have less maintenance because there s just less lumber on it. Both Hardin and Bell spoke highly of Centaur polymer fencing. While on the higher end of the price spectrum in terms of fencing options, Centaur fencing is lauded for its safety, longevity, and ease of maintenance compared to traditional wooden fences. Centaur fence is comprised of hightensile wire bonded with a proprietary polymer, which allows for increased flexibility and does not have the risk of splintering. The polymer also includes ultraviolet stabilizers and fungicides to help maintain its color, and the fence can be electrified to keep horses from leaning on it. The biggest selling point of that is it s probably truly maintenance-free except for the painting of the post that you put in the ground, Hardin said. Once you put it in, it maintains its color, it doesn t fade, and you very seldom have to do anything with it. There s no boards falling down. The condition of a property s fences also is an important factor to consider when in the market to buy a farm or expanding to a new property. Bell said fencing is often figured in with the price per acre and can give a property added value. When considering properties for purchase, Bell noted that spending a little more for land with well-built fences already in place is likely to be easier on the long-term bottom line than seeking out less-expensive properties with fences in need of repair. I think if someone is just starting out, you re better off to find something that s already improved than trying to improve it, Bell said. The improvement costs, I think, are more [substantial] than putting in something new. Then, you get to that fine line with the condition of the property. If it s not in good condition, you ll have to tear it up to fix it up. You can try to find something in decent condition that you can live on and use, and that s a lot less expensive than having to put it all in or redo.

PAGE 16 Sunday, February 2, 2014 DAILY RACING FORM DRF.COM/BREEDING CALIFORNIA CHROME HAS BIG PLANS By Steve Andersen The Cessna 172 is a single-engine, fixed-wing private plane that seats four, costs about $290,000 new, and can be seen by the dozens at regional airports throughout the world. The plane was going to be Steve Coburn s new hobby a few years ago. I wanted to buy an airplane, Coburn said last weekend. My wife said no. Carolyn Coburn was not keen on the aviation idea, leading the couple to seek an alternative investment. They chose Thoroughbred racehorses. When Carolyn Coburn put her foot down over the airplane, she made a decision that put her family on the 2014 Triple Crown trail. After several years of investing with the California-based Blinkers On racing syndicate, the Coburns and fellow partners Perry and Denise Martin bought broodmare prospect Love the Chase in Her first foal, by the young California stallion Lucky Pulpit, arrived in 2011 and was named California Chrome. Now 3, California Chrome has won three stakes, most recently the $250,750 California Cup Derby by 5 1/2 lengths at Santa Anita on Jan. 25. The win has put California Chrome on course for the Grade 2, $300,000 San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita on March 8, a key prep for the Grade 1, $1 million Santa Anita Derby on April 5. If it all goes according to plan, we re going East [to the Kentucky Derby], Steve Coburn said. That s down the road, and we can always dream. We re hoping his 3-year-old year will be great. Hopefully, his 4-year-old year will be fantastic. He s a nice colt. Officially, Steve Coburn and Perry Martin are listed as the owners of California Chrome, but their families are just as involved. The men met through Blinkers On, holding small ownership shares of several runners. If you ve got a California driver s license, I helped make that, Coburn said. Carolyn Coburn works in health care in Carson City, Nev. The couple has lived in Nevada for 20 years, having moved from Bakersfield, Calif. From an economic standpoint, the move provided an opportunity to invest in racing. When we moved to Nevada, we did well financially, Steve Coburn said. Perry and Denise Martin live in Yuba City, Calif., north of Sacramento. Perry Martin, 57, owns a laboratory company that tests products such as airbags and medical equipment. Love the Chase was one of the horses Coburn and Martin owned with Blinkers On. She won an $8,000 maiden-claiming race at Golden Gate Fields in February 2009 when owned by the syndicate. Two months and two races later, she finished last in an $8,000 claiming race, after having been acquired by Coburn and Martin. She was nervous and immature, and she always washed out, Coburn said. She loved people and hated horses. Love the Chase, by the Mr. Prospector stallion Not for Love, was bred to Lucky Pulpit in Martin liked the extended bloodlines, breeding a mare from the Mr. Prospector line to a grandson of A.P. Indy. In 2010, Lucky Pulpit stood at Harris Farms in Coalinga, Calif., for a fee, $2,500, which will be the same this year. It s a low-cost breeding, but the pedigree is there, Martin said. California Chrome weighed 137 pounds when he was foaled, Coburn said. He was so big that Love the Chase needed the next breeding season off to recover from the foaling. California Chrome was foaled Feb. 18, 2011, the anniversary of the death of Coburn s sister, Brenda, of cancer in the 1970s. He s been a special colt since he hit the ground, Coburn said. Love the Chase does not have a 2-yearold, but there is a yearling full sister. Another full sibling is expected any day now, Coburn said. California Chrome caught trainer Art Sherman s eye last summer. The colt won his second start, a maiden race for California-breds at Hollywood Park last May, and became a stakes winner when taking the $100,250 Graduation Stakes for California-breds at Del Mar in July. At the time, Sherman had long-term hopes for California Chrome. I really think he ll go longer, Sherman said after the 5 1/2-furlong Graduation. He s acting like that with the way he s trained. He s going to be a nice 3-year-old. He s got a nice stride. California Chrome made his graded stakes debut in the $301,500 Del Mar Futurity, a Grade 1 race at seven furlongs in September. He finished a troubled sixth of 11, beaten two lengths by the California-bred Tamarando. For Coburn and Martin, the race was frustrating to watch. We ve had our ups and downs, Martin said. We considered him a graded stakes horse when we ran him in the Del Mar Futurity. He had a rough trip. At the top of the stretch, he had a wall of slowing horses in front of him. When he got clear, he was going like a flash. California Chrome made two starts in stakes for California-breds last fall. He had a slow start in the $200,250 Golden State Juvenile at a mile at Santa Anita on Nov. 1 and finished sixth. The race was run on the undercard of the first day of the Breeders Cup, a day in which speed was favorable at Santa Anita. That loss was forgotten when California Chrome won the $200,500 King Glorious Stakes at seven furlongs at Hollywood Park on Dec. 22, drawing off by 6 1/4 lengths as the 2-1 favorite. The King Glorious was the featured race on the final day of racing in track history, making California Chrome the track s last stakes winner. In the California Cup Derby at 1 1/16 miles, California Chrome was the 5-2 second choice in the field of 10. Ridden by Victor Espinoza, California Chrome was third for the first six furlongs. When asked for his run, he responded quickly, pulling away to win by 5 1/2 lengths over Tamarando. He was back at the barn smoking a cigarette before the other horses hit the wire, Coburn joked the next day. We re still glowing a little bit, Martin said Wednesday. The Grade 2 San Felipe will be a key race, testing California Chrome against some of the circuit s top 3-year-olds. A big effort will lead to a start in the Santa Anita Derby. I think we re in good shape, Martin said. We have hopes for the Santa Anita Derby and on to the [Kentucky] Derby. The clock is ticking.
