2 RULES AND GENERAL INFORMATION Exhibitors, judges and show officials are responsible for knowledge of the rules. Full details of horse show operation, EC (including FEI) rules; list of recognized judges and other vital information is in the Rule Book copyright for the exclusive use of recognized shows. You must be a member in good standing of Dressage Canada and Equine Canada and the Alberta Equestrian Federation EC Dues are: To compete at a Gold (National) level competition, a Gold Sport License is required. To compete at a Bronze level competition, a Bronze Sport License is required. You must be a current member of your provincial organization and include a copy of your current year membership with your entry. Sport License fees are as follows: Bronze $25; Silver $75; Gold $120 and Platinum $200. In order to enter the Amateur classes you must purchase Amateur status. The fee is $10. Riders at the Gold level must be either Junior or Senior members of Dressage Canada. The Fees are: Senior, $25; Junior, $15. Temporary Sport License: $40; Temporary Horse Registration: $45; Single Event Upgrade: Bronze-Gold $40; Single Event Upgrade: Silver-Gold $20. The ALBERTA JUNIOR/YOUNG RIDERS 2014 DRESSAGE CLASSIC competition is a sanctioned as a Gold and Bronze competition member of Equine Canada, 2685 Queensview Drive, Suite 100, Ottawa, Ontario, K2B 8K2 and is governed by the rules of EC. Every class offered herein is covered by the rules and specifications of the current rules of EC and will be held and judged accordance with the EC Rule Book Statement of Principle EC, the National Equestrian Federation of Canada, supports adherence to humane treatment of horses in all competitions under its jurisdiction. EC is committed to: - Upholding the welfare of horses, regardless of value, as a primary consideration in all activities; - Requiring that horses be treated with kindness, respect, and the compassion that they deserve, and that they never be subjected to mistreatment; - Ensuring that owners, trainers, exhibitors and their agents use responsible care in the handling, treatment and transportation of their horses as well as horses placed in their care for any purpose; - Providing for the continuous well-being of horses by encouraging routine inspection and consultation with health care professionals and competition officials to achieve the highest possible standards of nutrition, health, comfort, sanitation and safety as a matter of standard operating procedure; - Continuing to support scientific studies on equine health and welfare; - Increasing education in training and horsemanship practices; - Requiring owners, trainers, and exhibitors to know and follow their sanctioning organization s rules and to work within industry regulations in all equestrian competitions; - Reviewing, revising and developing competition rules and regulations that protect the welfare of horses. 2

3 The standard by which conduct or treatment will be measured is that which a reasonable person, informed and experienced in generally accepted equine training and exhibition procedures, would determine to be cruel, abusive or inhumane. The 2014 Alberta Junior/Young Riders (AJYR) Dressage Classic has been organized with the goal of supporting the Junior/Young Riders of Alberta. Proceeds from the show and any additional donations will go toward the international competition, education, growth, team travel, and promotion of the Junior/Young Riders. The funds are held in trust by the Treasurer and all funds are allocated according to the guidelines set by the AJYR Dressage Association. This is the major fundraiser for our Junior and Young Riders to assist them with competition expenses associated with travel to the North American Junior and Young Riders competition and Youth Nationals. This year, the NAJYRC competition will be held in Lexington, Kentucky. All riders are welcome to participate in the AJYR Dressage Classic, whether they are Adult Amateurs, Juniors or Open riders. For those riders that are not quite ready to compete in the Gold Show, a one-day Bronze show is being offered on Saturday, May 10, The executive of AJYR will be happy to answer any questions you have about their programs. 4 ENTRY REGULATIONS 1. Gold Show Entries must be received by APRIL 27, Bronze Show entries must be received by MAY 3, No Phone Entries. Late entries may be accepted at the show secretary s discretion with a late fee of $50 this applies to any entry RECEIVED after the closing date. Please the show secretary to determine if late entries will be accepted or not. 2. An entry is not considered valid until it has been paid in full. Post-dated cheques will not be accepted. Cheques or money orders should be made out to Alberta Junior/Young Riders. money transfers will be accepted to sherib@xplornet.com (entries may be sent by and will be accepted only once the fees have been ed. You will need to sign a waiver form at the show upon your arrival if you your entry) 3. All entries must have the signature of the owner or authorized agent and a signature for the person responsible for the horse. 4. Any rider registered in the Gold Show may also compete in classes in the Bronze show, but they must pay the compulsory fees for each show. 5. The show committee reserves the right to limit entries, please send in your entries early. 6. In order to be eligible to compete at Gold dressage competitions, all Canadian entries are required to hold both an EC (or FEI) passport and a valid EC horse license to compete, or if owned by a Temporary Sport License holder, a temporary horse registration form must be purchased at each competition entered. Foreign entries must sign an affidavit. 7. Both the owner and rider of the horse competing in the Gold show must be EC Gold members. The rider must be a Dressage Canada Member in good standing. Your membership will be checked online upon receipt of your entry. Your entry will not be considered complete until these memberships are verified. 8. Contact the EC office to obtain a passport. Passports must be turned into the show office for the Gold entries before the horse will be allowed to compete. Numbers will be given out at this time. A valid 2014 Horse License must also accompany all passports. 9. An eligible Temporary Sport License holder may compete in Amateur classes provided an Amateur Affidavit has been completed and is on file with the competition secretary. (A208.3) 10. Hors Concours entries will be accepted with full fees into the Gold show. Entrants are subject to EC rules, and are not eligible for awards. 11. There will be a Veterinarian and a Farrier on call; their names and numbers will be posted in the Show Office. 12. Cancellations prior to the closing date will have all fees less the Administration fee refunded. Cancellations after the closing date but before 6pm May 8 with a vet/dr certificate will have Class & stabling fees refunded. Administration and EC fees will be forfeited. Cancellations after the closing date without a vet/dr certificate will have all fees forfeited. 13. Any horse entered in any class at a competition may be selected for equine medication control testing while at the event location. 14. It is compulsory for the horse s competition number to be worn by the horse or rider/handler when the horse is outside the stall from the time that the number is issued until the end of the competition so that officials can identify the horse. Failure to display this number will incur a warning for the first offence and, in the case of second or subsequent offences, possible elimination or disqualification at the discretion of the ground jury 15. Any horse arriving on the competition grounds but not competing will be subject to all EC and competition rules and must be assigned a number that must be worn when outside the stall. A non competition fee will be assessed. (E7.11.3) 16. It is the exhibitor s responsibility to read and be familiar with EC rules and regulations. 17. Safety Headgear: All riders regardless of age or level or competition, must wear ASTM/SEI or BSI/BS EN approved protective headgear at all times when mounted at any EC sanctioned dressage competition at the event location. Note: At the tack check which follows the test, the steward may ask the rider to dismount so the helmet may be inspected for the ASTM/SEI or BSI/BS EN label. (E4.0). 18. All riders, grooms, trainers and parents are to conduct themselves in a sportsmanlike and courteous manner. The AJYR executive reserves the right to eliminate a competitor at their discretion. Discourteous behavior toward any fellow competitor, Westerner staff, steward, judge or show committee member will result in immediate expulsion. A protest may be filed with the show secretary accompanied by a non-refundable fee of $100 cash. 19. Lunging will not be allowed in the warm-up area. If space permits, a lunging area will be provided. (E7.16.5/6/7) 4

5 20. Exhibitors must be ready to compete when scheduled. Competitors must report to the Steward for inspection of bridle, saddlery and dress immediately upon leaving the competition arena. Riders are welcome to approach the steward and ask for saddlery/dress rule clarifications prior to riding their test. A rider who is eliminated must still report to the steward (E4.16). 21. A horse/rider combination must have obtained the following prior to competing in a freestyle: a minimum score of 55% in a dressage test at the same technical level, or higher, as the freestyle they wish to enter (e.g. 55% in First or Second Level to compete in the First and/or Second Level Freestyle). The dressage score may have been obtained at an EC Gold/Silver dressage competition prior to the competition, or may be obtained at the same competition in which they wish to enter the freestyle. (E10.6) 22. A horse/rider combination may compete in any two, but only two consecutive levels and a maximum of four tests per day including the freestyle. More than one rider may compete on a given horse but the horse may not compete against itself. Equitation, Materiale and non-ec Classes are included in the maximum of four classes per day. (E7.11.9) 23. To assist competitors in obtaining qualifying freestyle scores, all freestyles will be scheduled on Sunday. A freestyle music check will be scheduled for Friday or Saturday times will be posted. 24. Results achieved while competing with a Temporary Sport License may not be used to qualify for year-end awards, championship competitions, finals or subsequent competitions requiring qualification. (A208.4). 25. Results achieved while competing with a Temporary Horse Registration may not be used to qualify for year-end awards, championship competitions, finals or subsequent competitions requiring qualification. (A411.4) 26. FEI Test of Choice classes cannot be used to qualify for Gold Provincial/ Regional/National Championships and team qualification. Exception: FEI Junior and Young Riders may use scores earned in Test of Choice classes to qualify for Gold Provincial/Regional/National Championships and team qualification. All other levels in Test of Choice classes may be used as qualifiers for Gold Provincial/Regional/National Championships. (E7.31) 27. Any horse receiving less than 50% of the total points obtainable in a test shall not be eligible for awards, ribbons, or prizes. (E9.10.7) 28. When there is only one horse in a class, ribbons and prizes shall be awarded in accordance with the following chart of percentages: 1 st - 60% or higher; 2 nd - 57% to 59.9%; 3 rd - 54% to 56.9%; 4 th - 51% to 53.9%; No ribbons or prizes shall be awarded below 4 th position. (E9.9.10) 29. Dress requirements for all levels of both the Gold and Bronze shows are detailed in the EC rules (Article E 4.1) and equipment requirements for all levels are in the EC rules (Article E 4.2) at It is the rider s responsibility to be aware of the dress & equipment rules for their show level and class level. 30. Prix Caprilli classes will be offered in the Bronze show. The two tests being offered are attached at the end of this prizelist. The requirements and purpose are listed on the tests. 31. Dressage Canada s Equitation Pilot will be offered on Saturday. Riders may be entered either in the Bronze Show or the Gold Show to ride in the Pilot. Riders will ride the test they choose (Training Test 1 or First Test 1) in their age group and then will ride in an Equitation Class. The scores will be combined to determine the champion and reserve at each age division. Riders require at minimum a Bronze sport license to enter, no passport required, no DC membership required. If the rider only enters the Pilot class then no levy needs to be paid. If the rider enters any additional classes in the show then they will be required to pay the DC levy as stated on the entry form. Please contact sherib@xplornet.com with any questions. 32. Miscellaneous Classes will be offered. Competitor must contact show secretary to request a certain test. Competitors must supply copies of the test (that they have requested and been approved for) to the show secretary at least one week before the show date. Test Readers: There will be no test readers provided by the show, all riders must supply their own readers. 5

6 Stabling: Stabling is mandatory for horses in the Gold competition. The rate is $160 for the show weekend. The stabling fee includes shavings as bedding. The stabling is not available until 1:00 p.m., Thursday, May 8, Please do not plan your arrival before this time. Warm up in all rings will be available from 4:00 9:00 p.m. Thursday. Stabling is mandatory for horses in the Bronze competition. The rate is $160 for the show weekend or $55 for Friday night and Saturday day. The stabling fee includes shavings as bedding. Horses competing in the Bronze Show that are stabled for the weekend can arrive at the same time as the horses in the Gold competition which is 1:00 p.m., Thursday, May 8, Horses that are stabled for Friday night and Saturday day can arrive 1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 9, 2014 and must leave after the Bronze competition ends on Saturday. The Bronze competition ring will be available for warm-up on Friday from 4:00 to 8:00 pm. RV & Trailer Parking: All RV and camping units must register with the Campground. The Campground permit must be displayed in all vehicles at all times. Vehicles onsite without permits displayed will be ticketed. FEI Age Limitations: The following age limits only apply to riders competing in FEI Children, FEI Pony, FEI Junior and FEI Young Rider Classes: FEI Children: Open to competitors from the beginning of the calendar year in which they reach the age of 12 until the end of the calendar year in which they reach the age of 14. FEI Pony: Open to competitors from the beginning of the calendar year in which they reach the age of 12 until the end of the calendar year in which they reach the age of 16. FEI Junior: Open to competitors from the beginning of the calendar year in which they reach the age of 14 until the end of the calendar year in which they reach the age of 18. FEI Young Rider: Open to competitors from the beginning of the calendar year in which they reach the age of 16 until the end of the calendar year in which they reach the age of 21. Volunteers: All members of the Alberta Junior Young Riders organization will be scheduled for a volunteer shift. Volunteer shifts will be available at check-in on Thursday and every effort will be made to ensure that volunteer shifts do not conflict with ride or warm up times. Any special requests on volunteer times should be made on the show entry form. AJYR members must volunteer for at least 3 hours over the 2014 year at AJYR events in order to be eligible for year-end awards, education or competition subsidies. This show is a great way to complete some of your volunteer hours. Other volunteers who can assist with gates or running will be gratefully accepted. Volunteer shifts will be kept to a 2 hour maximum. Please indicate on the show registration if you are available for a shift. 6

7 Riding times: Show correspondence will be handled through . Ride times will be ed as soon as they are available. Ride times will also be posted on the web by end of day Sunday, May 4, Day sheets will be posted at the end of each day. Riders are responsible for checking the day sheets as ride times may change. The Organizing committee will keep changes to a minimum. Presentations: There will be no mounted presentations. Ribbons (to 5 th place) for both the Bronze and the Gold show by category of rider will be handed out with tests. Alberta Junior Young Rider Member Championships for the Gold Show Championship awards at each level will be given at the show to full members of the Alberta Junior/Young Rider Dressage Association. Applications to join the Alberta Junior/Young Rider Dressage Association will be accepted until the end of classes on Saturday. Riders must complete at least TWO different tests in the categories below to qualify for championship awards. Freestyles are not eligible. The two percentage marks will be averaged, and the horse/rider with the highest average will be named Alberta Junior Young Rider Member Champion of each level. Awards: Walk/Trot, Training, First, Second, Third, Fourth, FEI Children, FEI Pony, FEI Junior, FEI Young Rider Non-Member Championships for the Gold Show (Non-AJYR Juniors, Open and Adult Amateurs) Championship ribbons will be awarded to the following categories in the Gold Show. Members of the Alberta Junior Young Riders do not qualify for these championships as they are eligible for the member awards. To qualify for these awards, riders must complete at least TWO different tests in the categories below. The highest average will be used to calculate the champions. Juniors that are not members of the Alberta Junior Young Riders Association are eligible for these awards, and their averages will be calculated with the Open riders at each level. If there is only one rider in the class or classes then that rider must have achieved First Place in order to be eligible for a championship. Awards: Walk/Trot, Training, First, Second, Third/Fourth, FEI Young Horse, FEI Level Alberta Junior Young Rider Member Championship for the Bronze Show One member award will be given at the show to a full member of the Alberta Junior/Young Rider Dressage Association with the highest score at the Bronze Show. Applications to join the Alberta Junior/Young Rider Dressage Association will be accepted until noon Saturday. Test must be from Equine Canada Walk/Trot through Fourth Level, or from an FEI Childrens, FEI Pony, FEI Junior or FEI Young Rider Test. 7

12 GOLD SHOW WAIVER The following must be signed by ALL COMPETITORS. Entry will be considered invalid without all necessary signatures and dates. I hereby certify that every horse, rider and/or driver is eligible as entered and agree for myself and my representatives to be bound by the Constitution and Rules of Equine Canada at this competition. It is hereby recognized that all equestrian sports involve inherent risk and that no helmet or protective equipment can protect against all foreseeable injury. I hereby accept this risk and hold harmless EC, the competition, their officials, organizers, agents, employees and their representatives. In the event that participates in an Equine Canada sanctioned competition where approved headgear is required for juniors, he/she will wear a properly fitted ASTM/SEI OR BSI/BS EN approved helmet. It is understood that juniors not meeting this requirement will not be allowed to compete at these competitions. I have read the rules and entry information in this Prize List. 16 Prix Caprilli Test I The Prix Caprilli test provides an opportunity for the horse and rider to demonstrate elementary skills in dressage and jumping. It is understood that in the working gaits, a jumping horse is not expected to be as on the bit (round) as a competing dressage horse. The horse must softly accept the bit and may show more roundness in the parts of the test separate from the jumps. Trot work to be done posting. Transitions into and out of the halt may be through the walk. Test may be called. Refusals will be penalized as an error of course. Knockdowns will be penalized at the judge s discretion. In the case of a knocked down rail being in the way, the judge will ring the bell for the rider to stop without penalty. After the jump is replaced, the bell will be rung again telling the rider to continue from where they stopped. Errors: 1 st 2 points, 2 nd 5 points, 3 rd elimination. 3 refusals at one jump elimination.
