2 Introduction In 2010 the Small Nations Working Group started this study, to know exactly the position of the European National Federations and the overall European position at the FEI, regarding the riders and horses registrations and the number of European shows as well; For the last three years, the EEF has been updating this study which has been very much appreciated by all EEF Members; In the next pages you will have information about the number of riders, horses and shows of all disciplines and a three year comparison of those registrations, within the FEI; Also information from the 5 Continents represented at the FEI, not so extensive, but sufficient information to have a clear picture of the relevance of Europe in a world wide scale; The source for all the information given in this document, regarding the number of registrations was the FEI website; 2

25 Facts EHN The European Horse Network has collected figures from different studies to give an estimation of the Horse sector in Europe. Here is an idea of the size of the sector: 100 billion euro a year economic impact full time jobs equivalent provided by the sector 6 million or more horses in Europe 6 million hectares of permanent grassland given over to horse grazing A growing sector: the number of horse riders growing by 5% a year 25

26 100 billion euro a year economic impact Although there are no definitive statistics, different studies in states of the EU give some idea of the horse industry s revenue. European Horse Network (EHN) estimates that the total impact of the horse world in Europe could be more than 100 billion euro are a year. This figure includes the direct economic impact of all parts of the horse industry (breeding, industrial companies and services linked to horses, education, research ) and the indirect and induced impact of the horse activities like organisation of events and betting (30 billion euro/year). This total economic impact figure can be compared to the American figure calculated by the American Horse Council in 2005: 100 billion dollars a year showing that the EU is indeed an important world player in this international horse world. Thus, in European Union, considering the direct industry revenue and the amounts of bets, the different governments are collecting at least 5 billion euro of taxes thanks to this industry. 26

27 full time jobs equivalent provided by the sector Different ratios have been calculated on the employment linked to horses, but working horses (in breeding, in competition, or for leisure...) all rely on providing employment which is labour intensive and provides year long employment opportunities. With all the different studies on this question, EHN estimates that the horse sector in Europe represents around full time jobs equivalent. These are also quite often in regions where there is limited rural employment in other sectors. Considering this figure and the fact that this is a growing sector in Europe, which provides employment in many EU regions, this is a significant and positive area for growing EU employment in the regions. 27

28 6 million or more horses in Europe & 6 million hectares of permanent grassland given over to horse grazing From the registered number of horses in Europe to estimations from different states of the real number of horses, EHN estimates that there are around 6 million horses in Europe. The number of hectares dedicated for horses (grazing, production of horse food and other activities) is not clearly known. As the uses of horses are very different, from extensive breeding to urban equestrian centres, and from grassy lands to southern regions, the ratio surface needed per horse is very variable: 1 horse uses from 0,75 ha to more than 2 ha. But considering the estimations from different states, EHN considers that at least hectares are used for horses in Europe, from which an important part is made up of permanent pastureland. In addition, horse paddocks do not require extensive use of pesticides or fertilisers, and support a wider variety of grasses and flora. Considering the importance maintaining permanent pastures for biodiversity (also for the protection of water quality), and the interest in developing activities in rural areas of Europe which are positive from an environmental perspective, the horse sector is also an interesting issue for EU rural development and environmental protection. 28

29 A growing sector: the number of horse riders growing by 5% a year Thanks to international organisations representing racing and sport, the figures on the number of events is quite precise at a racing and International (FEI) level : races a year and national sporting events a year. However, this only represents in the sports horse sector the top elite and does not take into account the hundreds of smaller competitions being held every week throughout Europe in very many regions. This dynamism of the horse activities is also shown by some figures representing the growth of this sector: as an example, the number of horse riders has grown +5% /year. While total revenues from farming have fallen around 60% from their peak income level in market dynamics in agriculture and leisure are expected to amplify this further in future years, making the equestrian, horse racing and betting sector an important contributor for regional growth and a dynamic sector of interest for EU future economic development. 29
