4 A Journey Worth Traveled It s said that the vast majority of stallion prospects fail commercially. Someone forgot to tell JAILHOUSE JESSE. While he does not rival Muscles Yankee or Yankee Glide, he has forged a place for himself in Indiana after the most improbable journey to get there. By Kimberly A. Rinker

5 When Al Libfeld purchased the Balanced Image lass Jailhouse Rock at the conclusion of her racing career, he didn t realize the journey the mare would take him on. Jailhouse Rock made nearly half a million dollars and was a hard-knocking race mare, recalled Libfeld, a Pickering, Ontario Standardbred owner and breeder for three decades. She was right there every start and was very tough. Jailhouse Rock 2,1:59.3f ($492,523) was trained throughout her career by either John Cecchin or Jimmy Takter, and was owned by George Lund of Sudbury, Ontario. She was an Ontario Sires Stakes champion at two and three and just missed winning the $325,00 Breeders Crown for sophomore fillies by a head in 1:55.2 at Garden State Park in 1994.

6 A JOURNEY WORTH TRAVELED Photo by New Image Media Libfeld selected Jailhouse Rock to add to his impressive broodmare band. I bred her to Donerail, and I liked the way her first colt looked and decided to keep him for myself, he noted. That was Jailhouse Jesse. He wasn t a big colt but he was very good gaited and well conformed and was a pretty sound horse. Jailhouse Jesse earned $262,015 for Libfeld, taking a top mark of 4,1:53.3 in a Lexington time trial, and raced consistently during his two, three and fouryear-old seasons. He was conditioned as a freshman by Jonas Czernyson and during his three and four-year-old seasons by Brett Pelling. At the end of 2001, Libfeld decided to stand him as a stallion. I placed him in Ohio at a farm called The Stallion Station, but he only bred 57 mares his first year and 25 his second, Libfeld offered. I figured he didn t have a good chance of being a successful commercial stallion because of those low numbers, so I sold him for $8,500 at public auction. Someone bought him and flipped him right away, selling him to some folks from Finland for $10,000 in December of Jailhouse Jesse stood in Ohio in 2002 One of Jailhouse Jesse's top performers this year is the three-year-old colt Sing Jesse Sing who captured the $387,000 Goodtimes final at Mohawk for Jody Jamieson in a career best 1:53.3. That race may be viewed by clicking on the video icon above. and 2003, producing 24 registered foals. However, among that first crop was a filly by the name of Buck I St Pat who has won over $1.7 million to date and is still racing in the upper echelon of trotting mares this year at age seven. Bart Glass, at the time a livestock expert with Lexington-based Kentucky Standardbred Sales Company and a longtime associate of Libfeld, recalls what he said to him in When the horse was still standing in Europe, and his first crop were racing and starting to do well, I told Al, you d better go get that horse back. So Libfeld did just that. When Jailhouse Jesse had that unbelievable first crop with Buck I St Pat, and others, I sent a rep to Finland and I bought him back for a lot more than $8,500! Libfeld laughed. He had three really good horses from his first crop of 16 and those Ohio mares were reasonable mares but weren t of Grand Circuit status. Jailhouse Jesse proved then that he could produce Grand Circuit capable horses from mediocre mares, as evidenced by horses like Buck I St Pat, who can compete with the best trotters in North America. Jailhouse Jesse had six horses who earned $100,000 or more from that first (2003) crop: Buck I St Pat 1:52s ($1,736,855), Sunset Gentleman 1:55.3f ($283,709), Pur e Jesse 1:56.3 ($227,590), Jail House Denise 3, 1:57h ($182,789), Bail Jumper 1:55 ($136,402) and Travelin Preacher 1:57.1 ($122,460). Four of those continue to race this year. After Jailhouse Jesse returned to North America, Libfeld decided to place his stallion with brothers Jay and John Mossbarger at the Ohio-based Midland Acres for the 2006 season. The decision to go with the Mossbargers was really easy, Libfeld said. They were recommended to me and offered me the best deal at the time. It s really easy when good people offer you a great deal. 8 A JOURNEY WORTH TRAVELED Photo by New Image Media Located in Bloomingburg, Ohio, Midland Acres is the Buckeye State s premier breeding farm, a full service facility which stands eight stallions. Jay, 53, serves as the farm manager and divides his time between that home base and Midland s new facility, a 131 acre farm located just east of Richmond, Indiana, only a half a mile from the Ohio border. John, 56, a veterinarian, supervises the breeding program for both locales. From top to bottom, the Mossbargers are just really good people who care about the industry and the horses, Libfeld stressed. It s a pleasure to be associated with them. Al was introduced to us by Bart, Jay remembered. He helped in the negotiation process. The horse fit in the state of Ohio at the time, better than he would have anywhere else in the country, Glass explained. Those first two years he was bred to some pretty average mares, and proved he could produce some significant horses despite that. Jailhouse Jesse had a full book of 119 mares in I put Jailhouse Jesse in the class of horses who are good solid racehorses who Seven-year-old Buck I St Pat, one of North America s leading trotting mares for several seasons, was from Jailhouse Jesse's first small crop. The winner of more than $1.7 million recently won the $351,000 Armbro Flight final at Mohawk by more than four lengths in a life best 1:52. To watch the victory click on the video icon above. later surpass themselves on the track through their progeny, Dr. John Mossbarger stated. A lot of good racehorses come off the track and initially bred big books of mares their first three years at stud, and then, year after year, their books diminish when they can t reproduce themselves. In their seventh and eighth years as stallions, they have very small or miniscule books. Jailhouse Jesse and stallions like him are just the opposite, he continued. When their foals start proving themselves on the track, their careers just take off. Jesse is only 13, and that certainly bodes well for him to have many more good years ahead of him. He is similar to horses like Nobleland Sam and Striking Sahbra, Dr. John added. They were solid racehorses who overcame breeding small books of mares early in their stallion careers, and after five years were breeding over 150 mares. Having the Indiana farm has changed the routine for the Midland crew significantly. Previously, I collected the horse here in Ohio and bred the mares, but now Jay collects Jailhouse Jesse in Indiana, and then brings the semen back to Ohio to breed the mares here. The new Indiana farm will allow us to board mares there year round for Indiana-eligible foals, Dr. John noted. The Indiana program dictates that mares bred in the Hoosier State must be housed in the state by June 1 of their breeding year through their foaling date. Before we purchased the Indiana farm we only had a stallion station there, Jay explained. Jailhouse Jesse is the reason we moved to Indiana, because we thought we could be successful there with him. His brother agrees. We moved Jailhouse Jesse to Indiana strictly based on our business plan, Dr. John admitted. It has cost us a lot of money to make this transition and to set July/August 2010 The Harness Edge

10 A JOURNEY WORTH TRAVELED up an Indiana base, but with the Ohio program in a depressed state, we felt it was a sound move for ourselves and for the horse. As a breeder, it takes two and a half years before you can recoup any money you ve spent when you consider that s the time between when you breed the mare and when you sell the yearling at auction. While Midland still breeds 40 per cent of their mares to Ohio stallions, the remainder are now bred to Indiana sires and a handful are bred on the national scene, Jay said. Jailhouse Jesse is very professional and you couldn t ask for a better stallion to work with, Jay noted. And he has a super semen count. He s just a stallion barn s dream. He s a very healthy, youthful horse and he s small, which is good, because as stallions go, the smaller ones seem to have a longer shelf life. Both are outstanding individuals and are selling in the Hunterton Farm consignment at the Lexington Selected Yearling Sale, October For further information contact Linda or John Glassford at (905) or (863) Although Jailhouse Jesse s book declined slightly in 2007 (93 mares) and 2008 (101), reflecting the economic state of Ohio s Standardbred industry, his book was one of the largest in the Buckeye State. To date his progeny have earned more than $4 million from 120 total starters, with 25 in 2:00 and four in 1:55 or faster. The Jailhouse Jesses are well-balanced individuals who have a very fluid, squared gait, Dr. John confirmed. The other interesting aspect of his foals is that many of the best ones have come from either Speed In Action or Overcomer mares. In 2011, Jailhouse Jesse will have his first crop of Indiana eligible yearlings sell at the yearling sales. His first two seasons (2009 and 2010) of breeding in the Hoosier State saw full bookings of 150 mares annually. As well, his stud fee increased to $4,000 in 2010, a significant jump from his previous figure of $2,500. This season Jailhouse Jesse s threeyear-olds are his first major crop since returning from Europe, Dr. John noted. It s hard to ignore his top horses like Jesses Messenger (3, 1:55f $204,189), the 2009 Ohio horse of the year, Sing Jesse Sing (3, 1:53.3s $266,441) and Call The Warden (3, Q1:57.1f $63,855). I haven t seen a horse like Sing Jesse Sing race as tough in a long time, Libfeld noted. Buck I St Pat carried Jesse for awhile and has just been a super horse to watch. She s classy and gutsy, and I see some of her grandmother in her. I think the Balanced Image blood helps give these horses their toughness. Libfeld has 49 broodmares located throughout North America, at Seelster Farms in Ontario, Concord Farm in New Jersey, Hempt Farms of Pennsylvania and at Indiana s Victory Hill Farm. Sadly, Jailhouse Rock isn t among them. Unfortunately, she passed away five years ago, Libfeld revealed. I still like her family though and I m still breeding to Jesse. Whether I ll keep all his foals and race them is unsure, but I know one thing, he definitely produces some very tough horses. July/August 2010 The Harness Edge
