Instead of being crushed between Ney and Bernadotte on one hand, and your main army on the other, the Russians are racing east to safety. In order to catch them and bring on a decisive action, you have advanced with the troops to hand. This has left Bernadotte out of the action (no changes there!), Ney chasing L Estocq s Prussians, and Davout still on the route back from his mission at Heilsburg. The good news is,

2 you have caught the Russians, and they seem to have decided to fight, as witnessed by the rear guard actions at Hof and, yesterday, in Eylau itself. However, you are almost certainly outnumbered! You hope for Ney and Davout to march quickly to the battlefield, indeed Davout has sent word that he is close. But when to attack? How long can you wait before the Russians realise? 4 You may deploy your forces along the heights stretching from Windmill hill through Eylau, or behind them. You may start the game in any formation, on or off blind, and on any orders. The exception is Davout. His current orders are to arrive with his left flank opposite Serpallen, on Attack orders. You may change this order and so alter the entry point of his corps on the battlefield.. The effect of an order on his arrival time is uncertain. Russian Commander Briefing 9 th February 1807 The campaign has not gone to plan. Your winter offensive, designed to isolate and destroy Ney and Bernadotte, was frustrated through a lacklustre execution of your plan by your subordinates. Since then, you have been continually surprised by the speed of French manoeuvres and the numbers of troops they are able to concentrate at critical positions. You hoped for a trouble free march back along your lines of communication to Königsberg. Instead, you have been forced back east with Napoleon s sword at your back. If the retreat continues, you will have to sacrifice the army s base at Königsberg, and keep falling back all the way to Russia. If you seek refuge in Königsberg, you face entrapment and annihilation at the hands of your more numerous enemy. A few days ago, you decided to turn and fight. The troops have responded well, with strong resistance by the rearguard at Hof, and last night at the village of Eylau. L Estocq s Prussian corps is expected to join you this morning, completing your concentration. You have selected a strong position, one which suits the character of your army. Napoleon will have to have to earn his victory! Russian Army at Eylau.
