14 The Real Value in the $Wvalue index Beef industry experts discuss the value of the $W index EPD. by Paige Nelson Recently, while pouring over bull Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs), my brother and I discussed the sire selection route our family s ranch should take. We quickly settled on the EPDs that best matched our goals. And some of our highest priorities landed on the $Value indexes. These selection tools were by far the most convienent way to compare and refine our choices. The American Angus Association defines $Value indexes as bio-economic values, expressed in dollars per head $Values encompass the revenue generated from genetically derived outputs and associated costs (expenses) from required inputs. $Values only have meaning when used in comparing the relative merit or ranking of two individuals. Because they are indexes, they allow for selection of several traits at once. For instance, the Weaned Calf Value ($W) index quantifies birthweight, weaning weight, maternal milk and mature cow size into one value. Hence, one can use the $W EPD to compare two individuals for their difference in preweaning performance. The following is a roundtable discussion of the merit of $W in today s beef industry. Quoted are Les Anderson, University of Kentucky, Extension beef professor, Jerry Connealy owner of Connealy Angus, Whitman, Neb., and Brian McCulloh partner in Woodhill Farms, Viroqua, Wis. Q. Why have you chosen to emphasize $W in your program? A. Anderson: Our customers in Kentucky market their cattle via two methods. A majority of steers and some heifers are marketed at weaning or shortly thereafter, and some of our customers also develop and market bred heifers. The $W EPD is the perfect EPD for us to use when making our mating decisions. [It] emphasizes the genetic influence of an animal, both direct and maternal at weaning. So, the progeny of an animal will excel in weaning traits and the daughters of that animal excel in their ability to wean calves. Q. How does one use $W to increase profitability while keeping cow size in check? A. Connealy: $W is an index designed for producers selling their calves at weaning. Theoretically, higher $W sires will lead to increased profitability for producers. Since $W is an index, it incorporates other EPDs into it. One of these EPDs is mature cow weight. Therefore, by simply utilizing $W, mature cow size should not get out of control. A. McCulloh: If cow size and maintenance is a concern, producers should pay attention to $EN (Cow Energy Value), as well as $W. However, I have asked the question to our customers, Are you concerned that your cows are becoming too high maintenance? Their consistent response is, Not really. I ask the same question to veterinarians, ruminant nutritition consultants and A.I. company representatives and the response is the same. Producers do not seem too concerned that cow size is increasing. Therefore, I am puzzled by all the discussion in the academic circles and popular press regarding increased cow size and the apparent lack of concern by producers. Q. How do your customers utilize $W in their selection decisions? How do they balance longevity traits with $W selection? A. McCulloh: Our customers expect that we have done our homework regarding traits like $W, and we try to keep that trait in the top 25 percent of the breed. Our customers also expect that we have selected for the convenience traits like udders, fertility, feet, longevity and disposition We take those traits seriously and simply cull the problems when they arise. Mating cattle produces a mix of genes, and as seedstock producers, we need to be able to honestly evaluate our own cattle. A. Connealy: $W is intended for producers selling calves for weaning and incorporates EPDs for birth weight, weaning weight, milk and mature cow size. If a producer determines that these four EPDs are economically relevant to his or her operation, utilizing $W would be beneficial. Single-trait selection is never a good idea, even if the single trait is an index. A producer should always consider additional factors, including phenotypic traits. A. Anderson: Many of our customers don t initially understand the $W EPD and how it can impact their profitability. Once they get a good grasp of the concept, most use this EPD as one of their primary selection tools. All producers should use EPDs in conjunction with phenotypic evaluation of conformation and disposition to make keep/cull decisions. Reproductive performance sorts cattle on its own Also, we emphasize crossbreeding which helps improve fertility, longevity and cow performance. Q. How do you utilize the selection of multiple indexes $EN, $W and $B? In your opinion, what is the optimal/most popular combination of indexes? A. Connealy: Selection of an index requires adequate knowledge. To a producer selling calves at weaning, $B has little economic relevance. Similarly, a producer retaining ownership through the feedyard and selling calves on a CAB [Certified Angus Beef] grid shouldn t select exclusively for $W. Producers must understand their own goals and marketing endpoints before deciding which index is most beneficial to them. No EPD or index is one size fits all.

15 A. Anderson: The only index we use for mating decisions is $W. We do not ignore the other values. We simply do not use them as our main selection criterion. I like to choose sires that excel in $W and yet are above breed average in $B and $EN. I know this next statement is contrary to most cattlemen but I give very little regard to $B. Our customers do not market finished cattle on the grid so this index has little value to them. I only glance at the $B value to make sure that I am at least breed average. The most popular selection index used seems to be $B. It just doesn t seem like the seedstock industry values selection for weaning performance, as much as it does selection for carcass or feedlot importance, even though most cattlemen s profit/loss is determined mainly by weaning performance. A. McCulloh: Optimal is top 25 percent in traits. A producer that retains replacements and ownership through harvest and has a herd of females in the top 25 percent for CE, WW, YW, DMI, Doc, SC, HP, CW, MARB, REA, $W, $B while also being around 50 percent for mature weight will position themselves to weather the tough times and capitalize in the good times. Producers should identify their own breeding objectives and decide for themselves what is optimal rather than popular. Finally, let s remember the economic weightings used for index calculation need to reflect our often fickle competitive markets, our individual resource limitations, the timing of production, changing production technologies and our ability to use these tools correctly in our breeding decisions. While $W is just one tool out of many in the toolbox, when incorporated correctly into a selection program, it proves itself as a reliable and measured route for increasing profitability for cow-calf producers. American Angus Association Value Index Definitions Weaned Calf $Value ($W) quantifies four primary economic impact areas: birthweight, weaning weight, maternal milk and mature cow size. Cow Energy Value ($EN) is available to assess differences in cow energy requirements, expressed in dollars per cow per year, as an expected dollar savings difference in future daughters of sires. 20 measuring the Select sires semen fertility by Dixie Russell Conception rate is the No. 1 profitability driver in anyone s operation, states Matt Perrier of Dalebanks Angus. When the seedstock operation looked at their own artificial insemination (A.I.) conception rate data, comparing semen used from four semen companies, they found differences they weren t expecting. REAL WORLD DATA In a comparison of 1,612 matings over seven breeding seasons (3.5 years), A.I. conception rates were compared. The data revealed a 6 to 11% Select Sires advantage over other semen companies (See Table 1.) Perrier explains, Before now, we had never looked at our data and made these comparisons. So, it s very honest data and I think it s worth talking about. I d hate to make huge determinations off of a one-herd project, but looking at our data, it s hard to argue this: The Select Sires bulls we used have shown they can get more females pregnant % 60.00% 55.00% 50.00% 45.00% 40.00% Dalebanks Conception Rate Data by Stud 64.10% 58.10% 53.40% Select Sires Company A Company B An unbiased, third party sorted and analyzed the data according to the individual sire and semen company. The statistical model used to analyze the data took into account the effect of year, season, age (cow vs. heifer) and technician. It s important for beef producers to be reminded that environmental and herd management factors greatly affect a herd s fertility. The females in the study were managed the same at the Dalebanks operation near Eureka, Kansas. The heifer calves are developed on a fairly low to moderate nutrition plan postweaning. A few years ago, we began this practice after analyzing research. Heifers are put on a moderate energy ration 30 days prior to A.I., vaccinated and synchronized with the 14 day CIDR protocol. After the second round of A.I., heifers are moved to native grass where they spend the rest of the breeding season with cleanup bulls. The cows are also vaccinated before synchronization. Then, Perriers use the Select Synch plus CIDR protocol, detecting heat through 72 hours post prostaglandin, followed by timed-a.i. breeding for those not detected. DALEBANKS SIRE SELECTION PROCESS When making mating decisions, Dalebanks keeps their customers needs topof-mind, most of which are commercial cow-calf producers. They choose sires that are significantly above average for a variety of customer-demanded traits. Calving ease, rapid early growth, optimal end product merit, docility and scrotal circumference are some of those customers top priorities. After that, we evaluate progeny phenotypes for traits like feet and leg soundness and udder quality. Reproductive efficiency of a sire s daughters is a high priority, so we ll continue to use that in our selection matrix, hopefully replacing anecdotal observation with more scientific genetic predictions in the future, Perrier further explains. When selecting A.I. sires, they search for high accuracy, progeny proven bulls, and begin that search using a 0.8 EPD accuracy search criteria for frontline performance traits such as birth weight, weaning weight and yearling weight, signifying presence of performance data. Then, from that narrowed search, they look at those with ultrasound and carcass records. We will give more credibility to a bull that has carcass records, especially from a good data set, that fairly and equitably compares him well. We will also step out and use a moderately proven bull, but won t use a bull that doesn t have any progeny. It s rare that we ll use a moderate to low accuracy bull, says Perrier. SELECT SIRES SEMEN FERTILITY ADVANTAGE What s a possible explanation for the difference in conception rates between Select Sires and Semen Companies A and B at Dalebanks Angus? Dr. Matt Utt, director of research at Select Sires, shares If there s one thing that gives us a fertility advantage, it would probably be our decision to throw away semen that doesn t pass our tests and not send it to the field. If you want to maintain quality, the easiest thing to do is, if there s any doubt on quality, then do not put it into inventory. Select Sires employs a rigorous multistep semen evaluation process and quality control system using the latest technology, assessing whether sperm can complete their job successfully. If the semen doesn t pass all quality control

21 advantage evaluations, then it doesn t get the Select Sires stamp of approval and isn t placed into inventory for sale. A lot of the steps we take are under the umbrella of Certified Semen Services (CSS). Look for that stamp at the bottom of the straw of semen. In my mind, it s a value-added indicator. Once a bull arrives at Select Sires, and his period of isolation is complete and he passes health testing requirements, semen is collected. Once collected, it s prepared by adding antibiotics (as dictated by CSS) and extender. The antibiotics are an effort to mitigate the potential for disease transmission. Extended semen is subject to several quality control evaluations after freezing. First, sperm motility is evaluated under a microscope immediately after thawing, using a warm water bath just as one would for breeding, and then again three hours after incubation in a warm water bath, which is called a thermal stress test. Second, sperm morphology (shape) is evaluated to determine if the sperm are abnormally shaped. An abnormally shaped head, midsection or tail of the sperm could lead to a multitude of problems, such as deterring the sperm from getting to the site of fertilization, embryonic mortality and others. Last, a flow cytometer is used to evaluate sperm viability (plasma membrane integrity) and DNA stability. Semen must pass all tests to go into inventory. If they don t pass the tests, they go into the garbage, says Dr. Utt. SUPERIOR SETTLER TM DESIGNATION Sometimes, a bull has outstanding semen quality and appears he also has above average fertility data from use in the field. When this happens, the bull given the Superior Settler designation. Dr. Utt explains, Having above average semen quality and appearing to have above average fertility gives us more confidence in making inferences about a bull s fertility. Then, we can give the bull the above average designation of Superior Settler. As a reminder, all Select Sires semen passes the same semen quality tests. Dr. Utt equates the Superior Settler designation to getting an A+ grade (exemplary) versus a B grade (good, satisfactory). Initially, Perriers didn t pay a lot of attention to the Superior Settler designation. But, they do use it as a way to help choose A.I. sires. It s not their first selection criteria, but it can help them refine their choices. When analyzing the same Dalebanks data, Superior Settlers achieved a 2% advantage in percent pregnant AI compared to Select Sires bulls without the Superior Settler designation. MORE INDUSTRY-WIDE DATA NEEDED I think this data comparison opens the door to the possibility of a robust set of genetic predictions that can compare conception rates on A.I. sires. It s one of the most economically relevant traits for anyone using A.I., states Perrier. If the American Angus Association continues to get more adoption of MaternalPlus and reproductive efficiency programs through AGI [Angus Genetics, Inc], we can hopefully find out the probability of a bull s ability to get a female pregnant. But, more data needs to be submitted. Dr. Utt agrees that an industry-wide push would be needed to collect A.I. conception rate data in a consistent and standardized way to help develop fertility estimates. Collecting data and improving conception rate will certainly go a long way in determining profitability in a beef producer s operation. 30 Real Time REAL WORLD Method Genetics EPDs and selection indexes provide quicker and more accurate genetic predictions for Angus-based herds. Rex McCloy, Commercial Producer, Morse, TX I bred a cow this morning. She ll calve in 282 days. We ll harvest her calf two years from now. We can t afford to find out then that the information we used today was wrong, says Mark Gardiner of Gardiner Angus Ranch at Ashland, KS. We only get to make so many matings in life, and we want to use the most accurate information available. That s why the Gardiners veterans of utilizing genetic evaluation and genomic technology for selection began using tools from Method Genetics when they first became available two years ago. You get a quicker picture. You see the results that much quicker, says Rex McCloy of Morse, Texas, a commercial producer who started using Method Genetics genomic tests to help select replacement heifers. He operates the McCloy Family Farms Partnership with his son, Craig. It includes running cows on three ranches in Texas and New Mexico. Keep in mind that the Method Genetics database is built Angus-based commercial cows an influenced by Angus Purebred cattle. Single-Step Genetic Evaluation Method Genetics utilizes what s known as a singlestep method of genetic evaluation. It s the next step forward in genetic evaluation, heralded by many as a revolutionary one. Creating genomic-enhanced EPDs in the genetic evaluations conducted by most breed associations is a multi-step process by which the genomic data is used to create molecular breeding values from a calibration and then incorporated into the evaluation process as a correlated trait. Molecular breeding values are blended into the evaluation after creation of the initial EPD. The single-step method employed by Method Genetics fits the genotypes directly in one step without the need for a calibration. As one would expect, the EPDs include all information pedigree, phenotypes and genomic data in the genetic evaluation simultaneously. The genotypes are fit directly each time the Method Evaluation is run, which can be as frequently as when customer genotypes arrive. So, genetic evaluation is as current as the last piece of information added for an individual animal. It s information that lets every producer make better decisions, Gardiner says. It works and it s real time versus having to wait months to see of the information was correct. The lag time Gardiner refers to is the length of time between recalibration of prediction equations used by those taking the multi-step approach to EPDs. Assessing Genetic Merit in the Commercial World Also, unlike breed genetic evaluations, the Method Genetics system enables seedstock producers to benchmark themselves against the commercial industry. That s possible because participating commercial producers like McCloy can provide genomic test information, phenotypic data, known sire information and the like and have EPDs calculated for their cows and herd. Since there are seedstock customers, too, commercial participants are able to see where their cattle fit into the entire population of cattle in the Method Genetics database. But, they can also see how they stack up against similar commercial programs through Method Genetics benchmarking results. Conversely, participating seedstock producers have a way to gauge how their genetics perform in the commercial world. Along the way, commercial producers who don t participate directly in the evaluation still reap the benefits of choosing bulls described more accurately and more currently with the Method Genetics EPDs and indexes. Real-world Tools The base-level Method Genetics genomic test yields individual animal EPDs for calving ease-direct, calving ease-maternal, docility, marbling, ribeye area and carcass weight. Users provide known pedigree information and other relevant details such as herd sires being used. For a commercial producer, that might be a sire s registration paper or knowing the herd source of bulls. Users may also submit basic performance data. Method Genetics converts these GE-EPDs into three industry-focused indexes (see opposite page). We felt like the Method Genetics test and genetic evaluation were more reflective of the commercial industry, McCloy says. They re also much more flexible in their analysis; it s quicker and more customer-friendly. McCloy first used genomic tests as an initial sorting tool for the heifers of unknown source he was putting together from sale barns. He continues to use Method Genetics testing on most all of his heifers to evaluate their replacement potential. Identifying sires of individual calves in multi-sire pastures a byproduct of the genomic test is an added bonus. Genomic testing was a tool we thought we could use to get us to where we wanted to go faster, McCloy says. In their case, they retain ownership of their calves through their McLeod Farms feedlot. These cattle along with many of the custom cattle they feed are managed for U.S. Premium Beef grids, which prize premium Choice and Prime quality grades. This spring, McCloy had calves from heifers that were selected using the Methods Genetic test. As he submits more data from his calves information contributing to evaluation of his herd s genetics he has the opportunity to accelerate progress. Rex McCloy is essentially building a documented pedigree with performance for his commercial cowherd, Bowman says. McCloy is convinced of the value he gleans from the Method Genetics system. Specifically, he points to the subsequent performance of heifers assessed with the their genomic test, as well as progress in carcass quality the increasing percentage that grade premium Choice and higher. Along with the indexes and absolute scores, Method Genetics provides percentile rankings for each animal so that producers can see where individual animals fit within the population for each trait and index. That represents an added selection point. Gardiner explains commercial customers are also using the information to better describe their cattle for marketing. It s one thing to tell a buyer you ve got a reputation set of calves. It s another to provide documentation of the calves percentile rankings within an elite population of cattle for traits that matter most to them.

The Method EPDs are generated from a multi-trait, single-step genetic evaluation that uses performance measures, ancestral pedigree, and available DNA genotypes. Technique in Cattle Mel DeJarnette, Senior Reproductive Specialist and Dr. Ray Nebel, Vice President of Technical Service Programs Because the rumen displaces the reproductive tract to the right, it is much easier to locate and manipulate the tract with your left hand. The cervix is located on the floor of the pelvic cavity near the anterior end of the pelvic bone. As you insert the breeding gun into the vagina, keep your gloved hand even with the gun tip. Keep your open hand flat against the floor of the rectum, allowing manure to pass over the top of your hand and arm. The recto-vaginal technique is the most commonly used method to artificially inseminate cattle. The basic skills required to perform this technique can be obtained with about three days practice under professional instruction and supervision. Additional proficiency and confidence will be achieved with further work on your own. Regardless of whether you are left or right handed, it is recommended that you use your left hand in the rectum to manipulate the reproductive tract and the right hand to manipulate the insemination gun. This is because the rumen or stomach of the cow lies on the left side of the abdominal cavity, displacing the reproductive tract slightly to the right. Thus, you will find it much easier to locate and manipulate the tract with your left as opposed to right hand. Raise the tail with your right hand and gently massage the rectum with the lubricated glove on your left hand. Place the tail on the left side of your left forearm so it will not interfere with the insemination process. With your fingers together in a pointed fashion, insert your hand in the rectum, up to your wrist. Gently wipe the vulva with a paper towel to remove excess manure and debris. Be careful not to apply excessive pressure, which may smear or push manure into the vulva and vagina. With your left hand make a fist and press down directly on top of the vulva. This will spread the vulva lips allowing clear access to insert the gun tip several inches into the vagina before contacting the vaginal walls. Insert the gun at a 30º upward angle to avoid entering the urethral opening and bladder located on the floor of the vagina. With the gun about 6 to 8 inches inside the vagina, raise the rear of the gun to a somewhat level position and slide it forward until it contacts the external portion of the cervix. You will note a distinct gristly sensation on the gun when it contacts the end of the cervix. The cervix, consists of dense connective tissue and muscle and is your primary landmark for inseminating cattle. It has often been described as having the size and consistency of a turkey neck. The size will vary, with post partum interval and age of the animal. The cervix usually has three or four annular rings or folds. The opening into the cervix protrudes back into the vagina. This forms a 360º blind-ended pocket completely around the cervical opening. This pocket is referred to as the fornix. In most cows, the cervix will be located on the floor of the pelvic cavity near the anterior end of the pelvic bone. In older cows with large reproductive tracts, the cervix may rest slightly over the pelvic bone and down into the abdominal cavity. To become a successful inseminator it is very important that you always know where the tip of the insemination gun is located. The walls of the vagina consist of thin-layered muscle and loose connective tissue. The insemination gun can be easily felt with your palpating hand. As you insert the breeding gun into the vagina, keep your gloved hand even with the gun tip. Manure in the rectum can often interfere with your ability to palpate the cervix and gun tip. However, it is seldom necessary to remove all the manure from the bowel. Instead, keep your open hand flat against the floor of the rectum, allowing the manure to pass over the top of your hand and arm. While handling the cervix you may notice rectal constriction rings attempting to force your arm from the cow. To relax these rings, place two fingers through the center of a ring and massage back and forth. The constriction ring will eventually relax, pass over your hand and arm, and you can continue the palpation process. Because the reproductive tract is freely movable, cows that have strong rectal and abdominal contractions in response to being palpated may actually push their reproductive tract back into the pelvic cavity. This will cause many folds to form in the vagina. In such cases, the insemination gun will often get caught in these folds and little or no progress will be made until they are removed. If you can locate the cervix, grasp it and push it forward. This will straighten the vagina and the gun should pass freely up to the cervix. If you cannot locate the cervix, encircle the gun tip with your thumb and forefingers. With a straightening motion of your wrist, gently milk the folds out of the vagina a little at a time. Slide the gun forward and repeat the process until the cervix is reached. Grasp the external opening to the cervix with the thumb on top and the forefingers underneath to close the fornix and guide the gun tip into the cervix. Using the flexibility of your wrist, twist and bend the cervix until you feel the second ring slide over the gun tip. Use your index finger to check gun placement (1/4 inch past the end of the cervix) before depositing semen.

75 At this point it is important for you to understand that inseminating a cow is a two-step process. The first step is to get the gun tip to the cervix. To accomplish this you must work the vagina and cervix forward, away from you to straighten the vaginal folds. If you do not feel the gristly sensation of the cervix on the gun, you are still in step one of the process. Once the gun is in contact with the external surface of the cervix you are ready to begin step 2. In step 2, you place the cervix on or over the insemination gun. That s right, the cervix is placed on the gun, the gun is not passed through the cervix. Excessive movement or probing with the insemination gun during the second step is very often counterproductive. Ground gained is often lost and we find ourselves back in a vaginal fold. The key to mastering step 2 of the insemination process is to know how to hold and manipulate the cervix and concentrating on doing the work with the hand inside the cow, not the one holding the gun. When the gun first contacts the cervix, you will usually find that the tip is in the fornix directly over top of the opening. Grasp the external opening to the cervix with the thumb on top and forefingers underneath. This closes the fornix at top and bottom. As in step 1 we must still know the location of the gun tip. This is accomplished with the palm and third and fourth fingers of your palpating hand. Use your palm and these two fingers to guide the gun tip to the cervical opening located between your thumb and forefingers. With gentle probing the opening should be located. You will feel the gun slide forward until it contacts the second cervical ring. Maintain gentle but steady forward pressure on the gun and slide your thumb and forefingers just in front of the gun tip and re-grasp the cervix. Because the cervix is composed of dense connective tissue and muscle, it is difficult to clearly distinguish the gun tip when it is located within this structure. However, you can determine the approximate location by bending the cervix. Using the flexibility of your wrist, twist and bend the cervix until you feel the second ring slide over the gun tip. Repeat the process until all the rings have been passed over the gun tip. In some cases, it may be necessary to bend the cervix at a 90º angle to clear the cervical folds. Remember, you are placing the cervix over the gun, not the gun through the cervix. A slight jiggle or give-and-go of the gun may sometimes be necessary to help pass by a fold, but for the most part gentle forward pressure is all that is necessary and gun movement should be minimal. When all rings of the cervix have been cleared, the gun should slide forward freely with little resistance. Since the uterine wall is very thin, you will once again be able to clearly feel the insemination gun. You are now ready to check your placement and deposit the semen. Rotate your gloved hand until it lies on top of the cervix. With your index finger, locate the far end of the cervix. Pull back on the gun until you feel the tip directly underneath your finger near the internal opening of the cervix. Raise your finger and slowly deposit the semen. Push the plunger slowly so that drops of semen fall directly into the uterine body. With proper A.I. technique and gun placement, semen will be deposited in the uterine body. Uterine contractions will then transport spermatozoa forward to the horns and oviducts with a good distribution of both sides. When the insemination gun is more than 1 through the cervix, all the semen will be deposited in only one horn. This creates a situation of uneven semen distribution. Should the animal ovulate from the opposite horn, conception rates may be compromised. Be sure to raise your finger after checking gun placement. Not doing so may obstruct one horn, again creating a situation of uneven semen distribution. When checking gun tip placement, be careful not to apply excessive pressure. The delicate uterine lining is easily damaged, predisposing the cow to uterine infections and reduced fertility. Make sure you push in with the plunger and do not pull back on the gun. Pulling back may result in much of the semen dose being deposited in the cervix and vagina instead of the uterine body. Although the recommended site of semen deposition is in the uterine body, research suggests that when exact gun tip placement is in doubt, depositing semen slightly into one uterine horn is less likely to compromise fertility than cervical deposition. After properly depositing semen, slowly pull the gun from the reproductive tract. Remove the gloved hand from the rectum and shake off the excess manure. Check the gun tip for signs of blood, infection or semen leakage inside the sheath. Make notes for your veterinarian or future reference where appropriate. Remove the sheath from the gun and hold it in the gloved hand. For the final time, check to confirm which bull you have used. Remove the glove starting at the top of your arm by turning it inside out as you remove it. Wipe the gun clean and dry and return it to the proper storage location. Some of the most important aspects to remember when inseminating a cow to attain maximum breeding efficiency are: Be gentle. Don t use too much force. Insemination is a two-step process. Get the gun to the cervix, and then place the cervix over the gun. Deposit the semen just through the cervix into the uterine body. Correct insemination procedures will result in better breeding efficiencies. More selection pressure can then be placed on economic traits enabling you and your family to realize a higher return on your semen investment dollars.
