A Breeding Program Designed to optimize, not necessarily maximize Our objective here at Sinclair Cattle Company is to create predictability and stay-ability in our cattle through line breeding to ensure long-lasting genetic value and profitability for our customers. Line breeding - and the subsequent selection of individual animals that exhibit the traits you are targeting - is the only process that sets genes. Individuals produced through line breeding, after sorting away the undesirables, create a greater percentage of predictability displayed in their progeny and offer increased heterosis for the industry. This leads to genetic advances and profits. Line breeding is not an approach for the faint of heart. We must ensure that the cattle selected through the process possess the valued traits to ensure success for our customers. Amassing higher degrees of consistency for a particular genetic characteristic is the purpose of line breeding over generations. Uniformity and efficiency are areas in which we make decisions with especially great resolve. Reproduction is the essence of animal production. Thus, reproductive efficiency will always stay at the forefront as we continue to evaluate and improve beef genetics. Soundness has a direct correlation to reproduction. The ability of cattle to anatomically move freely in their environment is conducive to achieving higher pregnancy rates, thus leading to greater reproductive efficiency and longevity. Longevity allows us to extend our investment cost over a longer period of time, giving us greater flexibility in managing and marketing our cattle. Our obligation as a seedstock producer is to keep the commercial cattle producer s needs in mind and fulfill them. That s our goal here at Sinclair. We do what we do to ensure predictability in your offspring - and to raise those time-tested cattle that will help us all survive the hardest of times. Inbreeding Coefficient (for reference, individual inbreeding coefficients are listed on each sire) Inbreeding coefficients are provided for each bull in this sire directory. The higher the percentage of inbreeding the greater the degree of prepotency to a particular individual (for example a bull with an inbreeding coefficient of 20.5% potentially offers a greater degree of prepotency and predictability than a bull with an inbreeding coefficient of 7.25%).

"Bob" Hough Convenience Traits Are your cows working for you or are you working for your cows? It is said that those who do not study history are doomed to repeat the mistakes of the past. That is why it so important to learn from the original masters of the performance movement to find out what traits they felt important for highly profitable, maternal cattle that were loaded with convenience traits. Some of the best of these trail blazing breeders were George Chiga ( ) and Roy Beeby ( ), and although these breeders raised Red Angus, their concepts are universal. These two men were known as some of the most important figures in the performance movement during their eras; however, it is interesting that at the time of these breeders prime, many of the traits they deemed of tremendous importance didn t necessarily have EPDs or ratios. They wanted working cows that were moderate in size, perfect udder structure, soundness, disposition, balanced milk and terrific fleshing ability. Although the term convenience traits is bandied about in today s cattle industry, it is believed that George Chiga was the first person to coin the phrase, and there have been no greater champions of efficient, maternal and problem free cattle than Chiga and Beeby. Among some of the attributes of convenience cattle that will be covered in this article are reproduction, soundness, foraging ability, calving ease, mothering ability, optimum milk, good temperament, polled character, cow size, longevity and cow efficiency.
