1 EQUINE HANDBOOK This handbook is intended to assist students undertaking Equine Studies with general information, what to bring and permission notes to be completed. ST. PAUL S COLLEGE, WALLA WALLA

3 INTRODUCTION Equine Studies has been offered as an area of specialisation at St Paul s for over 35 years and its focus is on the Olympic disciplines. Many students select Equine Studies as a way of following their interests and developing a range of equestrian skills. Completion of equine courses can also lead to careers in the equine industry, or further studies at university or TAFE. Equine courses are offered in Years The Equine centre is conveniently located alongside the main campus and it includes stables, yards and paddocks, tack rooms, dressage and jumping arenas, round yards, a cross country training area and a horse truck for taking students to competitions. Boarding students (and day students with special permission) are able to keep their horse at school. College horses complete with their own saddlery are available for students who do not have their own horse. Senior students previously enrolled in the Equine course may agist their horse at the Equine Centre with special permission. The formal curriculum includes studies in these areas: Year 7 - Semester 1 Equine Activities Fortnightly group riding lessons focusing on skill development in activity session. Year 7 - Semester 2 TAS Equine Weekly group riding lessons focusing on skill development within dressage, show jumping, eventing, show hacking and gymkhana events. Theoretical instruction based on technology (mandatory) in the study of horse related activities. Year 8 Semester 1 TAS Equine Weekly group riding lessons focusing on skill development within dressage, show jumping, eventing, show hacking and gymkhana events. Theoretical instruction based on technology (mandatory) in the study of horse related activities. Year 8 Semester 2 Equine Activities Fortnightly group riding lessons focusing on skill development in activity session. Years 9 & 10 Equine Studies (An elective study) Weekly group riding lessons focusing on skill development within dressage, show jumping, eventing, Trec, novelties, showmanship, lungeing and driving. Theoretical instruction based on general horse care, saddlery and equipment, health and disease, nutrition, safety, paddock management and farriery. 2 P a g e

4 Includes the Equestrian Australia (EA) ENSW Equi-Skills program leading to certification in Introductory Riding and Horse Management. These certificates form part of the pathway toward national accreditation as an EA coach. Years 11 & 12 Equine Studies (an elective study) Higher School Certificate (HSC) Board Endorsed Course involving extension of theoretical knowledge and further skill development from previous years. This course does not contribute towards the ATAR. Weekly group riding lessons based on; dressage, jumping, cross country, lungeing, driving, individual performance project. Theoretical instruction based on; Equine nutrition, reproduction and breeding management, farriery, dentistry, health and fitness, individual performance project. Includes the Equestrian Australia (EA) ENSW Equi-Skills program leading to certification in Introductory and Level 1 Riding and Horse Management. These certificates form part of the pathway toward national accreditation as an EA coach. Supervised riding is available each weekday after school from 3.45pm 5.00pm and for 2 hours one day per weekend dependant on conditions. Visiting instructors can be arranged to provide additional tuition at parents expense. Opportunities also exist on weekends for students to compete in equestrian activities including pony club rallies, Adult Riding Club and competitions. Further enquiries about Equine Studies at St Paul s may be directed toward Ms Melissa Foster. If students have a particular interest outside of our curriculum, students are able to develop these skills in after-school and weekend riding time. Depending on requirements, coaches/instructors can be organised by Equine staff and utilised at this time at an additional cost to parents/caregivers. EXPECTATIONS OF EQUINE STUDENTS Equine sports require students to demonstrate high levels of responsibility, not just in caring for their horse but also for taking precautions that minimize the likelihood of injury to themselves and their mount. Therefore, equine students are expected to adhere to the following expectations: 1. To provide and wear appropriate clothing and safety equipment, e.g., riding boots, an approved riding helmet, long pants and a shirt with sleeves. Parents may choose to provide an ASA approved protective safety vest for their son or daughter but this is not compulsory. 2. Safety footwear is required by all persons who enter the Equine Centre. Safety footwear includes completely enclosed footwear, preferably leather eg riding boots, laceup shoes etc. We require parents to also wear safety footwear when entering the Equine Centre. If incorrect footwear is worn, parents may use the College gumboots located near the laundry. 3 P a g e

5 3. Students need to provide their own saddlery and equipment if agisting their horse at the Equine Centre. These items must be clearly named. 4. To ensure that horses brought to St Paul s are healthy and have the appropriate vaccinations and certificates. 5. To care for their horse each day. Students must arrive at the stables by at least 5.00pm. This care involves checking horse for good health, that the water trough is working, feed given and the horse is rugged if required. The Equine Centre closes at 5.30pm each day. 6. On weekdays when riding out of the College grounds, to ride in a group of 3 or more in the company of a senior student (ie a Year 11 or 12), and then only with permission from the Equine Teacher. Written parental permission is also required before riding out. High visibility safety vests are provided at the stables and they must be worn when riding outside the College grounds. Riding out of grounds on weekends is not permitted, unless under direct supervision of Equine staff. 7. Day students are permitted and encouraged to ride at the Equine Centre weekdays 3:45pm- 5:00pm. Equine staff however, must be notified at least 48 hours in advance. Weekend riding by day students in designated riding times is also permitted, however, must be arranged in advance, as sometimes horses may not be available. 8. To ride only the horses, they are approved to ride and not to let other people ride their horse without the appropriate permissions. To obtain permission to ride another student s horse written permission is required from both your own parent AND the parent who owns the horse. Equine staff must be given the signed forms and also give their permission before any riding can commence. This is important for a safety point of view, since students need to ride horses that they are familiar with and appropriate to their level of skill. 9. To be at the Equine Centre only at designated times. For day students this is during Equine lessons either during the school day or after school between 3:45pm and 5:30pm. For boarding students, this is during Equine lessons, after school on weekdays between 3:45pm and 5:30pm. If morning care of their horse is required, the Boarding House Parent must be notified. On weekends the riding times may vary depending on activities. The time for each day will be announced by Friday. Students must only ride at the given allocated time on the weekend. No students are permitted to be in the Equine Centre beyond 5:30pm in the afternoon. 10. For boarding students, to sign out of the Boarding House when going to the Equine Centre and to sign back in upon your return. All students must be in pairs to be at the Equine Centre in unsupervised times. 11. The College cross-country course is out of bounds unless accompanied by a St Paul s College Equine staff member. 4 P a g e

6 12. A student who has a horse agisted at St Paul s College is responsible for it at all times. If a student is going to be absent then it is his or her responsibility to ask another equine student to care for the horse. Residential and Equine staff must be notified of your absence by 5pm Friday. If a horse requires care by another person on more than an odd occasion a $10 per day fee will be charged. 13. Permission must be sought from an Equine Teacher if equine students need to care for their horse during recess or lunchtime. This normally is only granted for day students who agist at the College. 14. All saddlery must be inspected for safety by an Equine Teacher before it is used. EQUINE STUDENT REQUIREMENTS The following items are essential for students participating in the Equine programme. All items must be clearly and permanently marked with the student s name. Riding helmet current AS/NZ 3838 (2006 onwards) or ARBHS 2012 SAI Global Marker. Riding boots, smooth sole a heel and elastic sides. Work boots are not acceptable for riding but may be used around the stables. Rain coat. Gloves sun protection, for riding in cold weather, or when the reins become sweaty in hot weather. Broad brim hat for sun and rain protection. Riding pants comfortable, long pants eg jodhpurs, jeans, track pants NB: shorts are NOT allowed when riding, including bareback. Riding tops must have a collar and sleeves which cover at least the shoulders. A collar provides good protection from the sun. Hair bands for students with long hair. NB: Safety standard approved helmets are compulsory for all students when riding at St Paul s College. Students must provide their own helmet for personal hygiene reasons. SADDLERY AND EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS The following is a list of essential items that are required if you are bringing your horse to St Paul s College. Coplus or Coplast bandage Antiseptic cream or spray Disinfectant solution Small container for mixing disinfectant solution Gauze or melanin for covering wound A pair of round-ended scissors Spare headstall Spare lead rope Riding whip even if you don t use one Feed container 6 P a g e

8 Water bucket Hay net or bag Washing powder for horse equipment Tack cleaning equipment Saddle soap Leather cream Saddle soap cloth Leather cream cloth Container for water Storage container for many of the above items Other items may be brought to St Paul s College such as rugs, a second saddle etc. As mentioned above please label all items clearly with the student s name. St Paul s owns a set of leather punches with the letters of the alphabet for you to label leather gear such as saddles and bridles. Please ask if you wish to use these. Neck rugs are allowed to be used in the paddocks, but hoods are not allowed to be worn in the paddocks. Hood rugs are restricted to stables and yards. Please label all rugs and neck rugs with the student s names on the near side (left side), below the front chest straps. HORSES COMING TO ST PAUL S COLLEGE Agisting a Horse at St Paul s College St Paul s provides agistment for horses at the Equine Centre. This agistment is provided in a shared paddock, and under normal circumstances, students may agist only one horse at St Paul s. Requests for individual paddocks and for bringing a second horse to St Paul s will only be considered if spaces are available, and then, this arrangement will be reviewed on a term-by-term basis. The following conditions will apply for students who agist a horse at St Paul s College. 1. Suitability of the horse Only horses which do not pose a risk to students may be kept at St Paul s College. 2. Age of horse horses under the age of 3 are not permitted at the College. 3. A vet check A vet check is required before a horse comes to St Paul s for the first time to ensure that the horse is healthy. 7 P a g e

9 4. Current vaccinations Vaccinations for Strangles and Tetanus must be in place before a horse can be agisted at St Paul s. 5. Drenching All horses are drenched at the beginning of each term at the owner s expense. 6. Adherence by the student rider to safety regulations These expectations are in place to safeguard the welfare of both the horse and the rider. 7. Adherence by the student rider to the commitment of keeping a horse at St Paul s - This means that the horse must be cared for daily and ridden at least three times a week (weekly boarders) or four times a week (full boarders). Weekend care will be arranged for weekly boarders who leave their horse at school. 8. Availability of Space Horses will be able to be agisted at St Paul s if room exists for the horse. The following is the order in which places are allocated: a. Students enrolled in Equine Courses at St Paul s College. b. Students who have previously enrolled in Equine Studies at St Paul s with first preference given to Year 12 full boarding students. Note that these arrangements are available by application and they will be reviewed on a term-by-term basis. c. Requests to agist a second horse and requests for an individual paddock by special application to the manager of the Equine Centre. Holiday Arrangements All horses are required to either go home or onto other agistment for school holiday periods. 10. New horses cannot be agisted at the College until all relevant paperwork is received. Day Students Horse arrivals If horses need to arrive or leave ahead of lesson times, outside of Equine Staff working hours, this must be pre-arranged with Equine Staff at least 48 hours in advance. If this is needed you will be required to sign a procedural form regarding horse care and access. If drop off is at a regular time, only 1 notification is necessary. VETERINARY INSPECTION AND IMMUNISATION REQUIREMENTS All horses coming to St Paul s College are required to be inspected by a Veterinarian for a health check beforehand. Any diseases, conditions, unsoundness, current treatment etc are required to be recorded. 8 P a g e

10 All horses must be vaccinated for Tetanus and Strangles and these injections can be administered initially by the Vet and the course completed either at school with an Equine teacher, or at your home if the Vet is satisfied that you can administer them. NB: Horses will be allowed to come to St Paul s College only after the primary course is started and is at least at the day 14 stage (it takes two weeks for your horse to reach a safe level of immunity). Please organise your vet inspection and commencement of the injections early to avoid disappointment and inconvenience. The primary course is as follows: - TIME STRANGLES INJECTIONS TETANUS TOXOID INJECTIONS Day 1 Day 14 (2 weeks later) Nil Day 28 (another 2 weeks) St Paul s College use highly qualified and experienced practitioners for veterinary, dental and farrier care. Should students need any of these services, they are to fill out a request form available from the Equine Centre. Each horse owner is responsible for their own horse and keeping up to date with these needs. The Vet Certificate including immunisation details must be sent to the school at least 4 days prior to the horse s arrival. Please keep a copy for yourself and one for your child to keep in their Equine folder. Please send to the Equine Manager either by mail, fax or admin@stpaulscollege.nsw.edu.au. The booster requirements are as follows: - TIME STRANGLES INJECTIONS TETANUS TOXOID INJECTIONS 1 Year after Primary Course Every Year Nil Every 5 Years -- If the primary course is to be completed at St Paul s College, the injections must be placed in a bag with the student and horse s names and the dates the injections are required. It is essential that the injections be transported on ice in an esky. They can be placed in the fridge at the Equine Centre on arrival. Thank you for your cooperation in this very important matter. 11 STUDENTS USING A COLLEGE HORSE St Paul s College provides horses for students who are enrolled in Equine Studies and do not have a horse of their own at St Paul s. The following conditions will apply for students using a St Paul s College horse (either during class time or outside of school hours). 1. Suitability of the horse for the rider Students may only ride the College horses allocated to them. 2. Adherence by the student rider to safety regulations - These expectations are in place to safeguard the welfare of both the horse and the rider. 3. Opportunities to ride school horses under staff supervision are available after school 3:45pm- 5:30pm Monday Friday, and 2 hours on the weekend (times vary dependent on boarder activities. 4. Adherence by the student rider to the commitment of maintaining their riding skills - This means that students are encouraged to ride at least three times a week (weekly boarders) or four times a week (full boarders). 5. Current Enrolment in Equine Studies - Students who use College horses must be currently enrolled in Equine Studies. 6. Students are also given opportunities to be involved in the daily care of school horses including feeding and rugging. 7. NB: Refer to section Student Requirements. External Events Students at St Paul s College have the opportunity to attend rallies, training days and competitions around the local area. The school attends approximately three or four outings per term, made up of rallies, Adult Riding Club competitions, Interschool competitions, training days and local Agricultural Shows. Students and their horses can travel in the school s truck and the cost for travel will be charged to your school account. If numbers exceed available space a reserve list is made. Parents are welcome to take their child to additional rallies or competitions throughout the term, or assist their child when they travel with the school. Adult Riding Club (HRCAV) The Horse Riding Clubs Association of Victoria caters for a wide range of riders who enjoy the social aspect of Club membership as well as access to the extensive competition system. Members can join like-minded riders for social activities, lesson s rallies or competition. The HRCAV caters for beginner rider s right through to experienced competitors with a level assessment system that ensures that you will compete against others of similar ability. 10 P a g e

12 St Paul s College is affiliated with Gerogery Equestrian Club with monthly rallies, and training days held at college grounds. There are a large number of competitions in our area for Adult Riding Club including shows, show jumping, dressage, combined training le trec, Navigation rides and horse trials events. Membership runs from 1 st November through to 31 st October each year. Junior membership is $80 and senior membership is $120. Parents are also welcome to join Adult Riding Club. The club colours are Cadbury purple and cornflower blue. This can be in any combination between shirt and vest. Beige/cream/banana or white jodhpurs are acceptable and depend on the type of competition. The club does not have uniform items for sale, and the school also owns a few items that maybe loaded. Interschool Competitions St Paul s College Equine students and their parents enjoy attending inter school competitions held in NSW and Victoria. Many of these competitions are held on weekends or during the holidays. If you wish for your child to attend, St Paul s College has an array of clothing and saddlery items for the students to borrow and proudly wear or use. We are happy to assist with the signing of entry forms as required. Please contact an Equine Teacher for assistance if you are planning a competition. St Paul s College will attend inter school competitions during the school year depending on timing, local competitions etc. STUDENTS USING ST PAUL S COLLEGE TRANSPORT TO EVENTS The following conditions will apply for students seeking to use St Paul s College transport to and from equine events. 1. Adherence by the student rider to the commitment of competing - This means that the horse must be cared for daily and commitment shown through learning tests and regular practice. 2. Soundness of the horse for competition work 3. Availability of room on the transport horses can be transported if room exists for the horse. The following is the order in which places are allocated a. Equine Studies students, ensuring that places are allocated equitably. b. Non-Equine Studies boarding students may fill any remaining places and these places are to be allocated equitably. 11 P a g e

17 Permission to Obtain Veterinary Attention I/We give permission for St Paul s College to obtain veterinarian attention for my child s horse at our cost in the event of an emergency. The Equine Manager will consult with student and/or parent first where possible.
