1 Talking Turkey- The Pitt County Wildlife Club Newsletter October, Welcome to this month s edition of Talking Turkey. Please take a moment to read the newsletter and stay up-to-date with any changes and/or the various events & opportunities awaiting you at the club. Membership Meeting 7:00 PM, Thursday October 16 th The menu for this meeting will be fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, butter beans and banana pudding for desert. The program will be presented by Jim Marsal. Field Notes From Club President, Bill Waggoner It s Fall and Hunting Season is upon us. Now is the time to get out your trustee old RIFLE and sight it in. Please make sure all your equipment is in safe working order. Don t forget your hunter orange. River Ranges 1, 2 and 3 will be OPENED to ALL the MEMBERSHIP November 1 st. You may drive down to the Ranges, but you must stay on the gravel road. Do not drive out on the ranges and please do not leave trash or equipment on these ranges. You may contact me about Club matters at Thank you for your continuing support. New Ranges The new ranges are growing grass and the berms continue to experience new growth as well to protect their integrity. Thank you for your patience. The new ranges will open for all member use on November 1 st. Youth Day Youth Day will be held on Sunday, October 19 th (see the attached flyer). Each event is well received by the public and we have a fun time assisting new and experienced young shooters. We will need volunteers to assist with registration, the ranges, event set-up and event clean up. Please keep those dates open. Event leaders will be calling soon to get your support to volunteer and assist on those days. Workday The workday will be held on Saturday, October 18 th at 8:00 AM. Activities will include weed eating the grounds, replacing backer boards, general grounds cleanup, roadway trash pickup, and cleaning the buildings. Remember to sign-in when you arrive and pick-up your workday voucher before you leave. This month s workday coordinator will be Rick Dean. Please bring your weed eaters and lawn tools Class at Lenoir Community College Our 1911 Accurizing and Tuning class will begin on October 6, 2014 and meet Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6pm-9pm, through Lenoir Community College, Snow Hill campus. Special instruction for beginning or new shooters will be offered at the Club. If you do not have a handgun don't worry, we furnished firearms. Please call Rick Brixon at (252) if you plan to attend. This is a free service to all and is open to the public. (Range 4) Please bring factory ammunition for whatever caliber firearm you are interested in shooting. Normally we provide 9mm, 38spl, 45acp or 22LR handguns. Handguns provided include a mix of revolvers and pistols. Safety First At PCWC, we allow members to open carry loaded firearms while at the club. Along with this privilege comes personal responsibility. If you either conceal or open carry a loaded handgun on club property, keep the firearm holstered unless (1) using it for personal defense or (2) on a hot firing line. REMEMBER, a holstered firearm is a safe firearm! Loaded handguns should only be unholstered or handled at the firing line. Unloaded handguns may be unholstered, holstered, or handled at either a firing line or one of the marked safety zones on the club grounds. Do not handle unholstered handguns at your personal vehicle. No ammo is allowed in the designated Safety Zone areas. Special Reminder Membership and Guest Badges Please make sure that you and your guests prominently display membership and guest badges at all times when you are on the on the club grounds. The badges are needed to help us identify members and guests alike to ensure that all persons on the club grounds are members or guests. In addition, if you bring a guest to the club, please make sure you both complete the liability waiver form located in the box on Range 3 when signing in your guest. 2

USPSA Match - Saturday, September 27 th beginning with set-up at 8:00 AM (or maybe a little earlier). Match begins at 10:00 AM. All ranges will be closed for the benefit match. Events will include 9mm pistol, 22 caliber rifle, shotgun, archery and casting. Tickets are $100 per person or $500 per team of five. If this is yours, please contact Bill Waggoner to claim it! A Clean Range is a Happy Range Please properly dispose of all trash. Please do not fill the trashcans with large items such as cardboard, boxes, large plastic containers, etc. and do not put cardboard under the trashcans. If the trashcans are full or if you have generated a large amount of trash, please make use of our new red dumpster located near the main parking lot. Keeping our ranges/grounds clean and litter free is the responsibility of every member and guest. 3

5 5 Fall Youth Day Don t miss the Annual Fall Youth Day hosted and sponsored by the Pitt County Wildlife Club (PCWC). As before, this free of charge event is sure to be lots of fun for the family and will include: firearms safety,.22 rifle ranges, an air rifle range, outdoor archery, skeet shooting, turkey shoot contest, and wildlife & hunting related exhibits. (no prizes at this event) This fun-filled day is for boys and girls ages Rain or shine, sign-in begins at 1:00 PM with a safety briefing starting shortly thereafter at 1:20 PM. Concessions will be available. Special note: At sign-in, a Liability Waiver must be signed by a parent or guardian for each child to participate. This event is free but please pre-register by October 18th to attend.
