1 August 26, 2010 Quail and Upland Wildlife Federation Northern Virginia Chapter Willow Oak Place Dumfries, VA Chapter 16 Newsletter August Schedule of Events September 11 Dove Hunt Shady Grove Kennels Chapter Officers Chairman AC Duckworth, Vice Chairman Bob Crowell, Secretary and Treasurer Jerry Saggers, (H) or (C) or at Dear Member, Thanks to all of you who have joined our NEW organization Quail and Upland Wildlife Federation. To date our chapter has 46 members and is growing. We want to take this time to thank you and let you know how much we appreciate your support. Its members like you that keep our organization moving forward. Happenings Dove Hunt September 11 Sponsored by Northern Virginia Chapter 16 Just a reminder Dove Hunt September 11 at member Neil Selby s Kennel and Shooting Preserve!

2 Page 2 NV Chapter 16 Chapter Seed Sale NV 16 is involved in the Excess Bulk Seed Program whereby organizations can get seed such as Milo/sorghum, corn, sunflower and wheat for conservation planting. Undelivered wheat available for pickup at Bob Crowell s farm located at Crowell Lane, Culpeper, VA 22701, (H), (C). For those who have already paid and picked up their ordered seed thanks for participating! So far this year, our Chapter has sold to the membership over lb bags of corn, 360 bags of soybeans and lb bags of wheat. We were unsuccessful in getting sorghum (Milo). What we did do was enter into an agreement for other seeds such as sunflower; whereby, we have been able to secure reasonable prices through a local supplier, Orange-Madison Cooperative Farm Services, Inc. (Southern States). YOUTH SUPPORT - BOY SCOUT EAGLE PROJECT MANASSSAS NATIONAL BATTLEFIELD PARK On May 8 and again on June 18, 2010 members from NV 16 assisted Kurtis Braun, Life Scout and Eagle Scout Candidate from Troop 161 and Park Wildlife Biologist from the, U.S. Department of Interior, National Park Service, and Manassas National Battlefield Park for a Boy Scout habitat restoration project. Kurtis successfully led a Boy Scout Eagle Project by undertaking two (2) tasks: The 1 st task required Kurtis to lead his team in the planting of shrubs and Native Warm Season Grasses that provide food and shelter and the creation of brush piles, and clearing of environmentally impacted areas to increase the amount and enhance the quality of nesting, brood rearing, and cover for bobwhite quail and other birds, pollinators and other wildlife on agricultural lands.

3 NV Chapter 16 Page 3 On June 18 Kurtis again led his team in the augmentation of Quail within the Manassas Battlefield National Park. He let 320 Quail raised birds loose nine (9) for the augmentation of the existing population. The purpose of this was for the NPS to conduct a study to determine if pen raised Quail could survive in the wild. In the fall Kurtis will be coordinating with the Audubon Society to help him with a Quail count in these areas. If this Scout/NPS project proves successful, additional birds will be let loose in this park. As another part of Kurtis s project, he had to demonstrate leadership, service to the community, good citizenship, and ethical behavior. We are proud of Kurtis in the work that he performed and the leadership he exhibited. YOUTH SUPPORT - BOY SCOUT EAGLE PROJECT BLM MEADOWOOD SRMA On May 22, 2010 members from NV 16 assisted Christian Jacobson from Troop 295, Life Scout and Eagle Scout Candidate at the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) SMA, Lorton, Virginia under the direction of the BLM Biologist. The purpose of Christian s project was to plant Silky Dogwoods in tubes and American Red Cedars to serve as shrubs and grasses to increase the amount and enhance the quality of nesting, brood rearing, and cover for bobwhite quail and other birds, pollinators and other wildlife on publicly owned (government) property. Chapter members provided a tractor, disc and tiller to ready ground and a 4-wheel ATV with seeder to plant soybeans, fertilizer and lime for this project.

4 Page 4 NV Chapter 16 As another part of Christian s Eagle project, he had to demonstrate leadership, service to the community, good citizenship, and ethical behavior.
