2 DAVID SHEPHERD WILDLIFE FOUNDATION Image Credit: Andrew White The David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation (DSWF) funds key wildlife conservation projects in Africa and Asia. Our aim is to FIGHT wildlife crime, PROTECT endangered animals and their wild spaces and ENGAGE with communities both in the UK and overseas, to help them understand the value of wildlife. We also campaign for stronger laws to protect wildlife and support investigations into wildlife crime. DSWF firmly believes that the future health of our planet and of all living things rests with today s children. If we can help develop, inspire and encourage an interest in the natural world, then we will have achieved our aim. We believe that it is vitally important to raise environmental awareness in children from an early age and it is our aim to bring conservation issues into schools. Running Wild will be an opportunity for your pupils to have fun raising money to save wildlife, while also learning new and exciting lessons about the iconic and endangered species they will be supporting. We offer practical advice on how schoolchildren, their teachers and families can help in our fight to save wildlife and wild habitats and the local communities who depend on them. 3 THE EVENT This year DSWF is launching Running Wild - your opportunity to organise a fun animal themed event at your school, while fundraising to save the species in the wild! Running Wild will be open nationwide for schools to have fun and take part in on 4th October World Animal Day. The event can take any shape you wish! Some suggestions could be: - A Rhino Run - A Pangolin Parade - An animal themed obstacle course Or you could even just have a non-uniform day and dress up as your favourite animals! We will provide schools with some great FREE resources including sponsorship forms and fascinating endangered species lessons in time for the autumn term. PLUS each school with a minimum of 30 students taking part will receive a FREE DSWF animal adoption - including a fantastic animal toy hand made by a women s group in Zambia!

4 WHERE THE MONEY WILL BE GOING The money raised by your students will help support our conservation projects across Africa and Asia. These projects help protect: Image Credit: Russell MacLaughlin ELEPHANTS Around 30,000 elephants are killed for their ivory every year. Working in Zambia, Uganda and India we support anti-poaching operations and illegal trade investigations. We also help fund a rescue, rehabilitation and release programme for orphaned elephants in Zambia. RHINOS An estimated five rhinos are killed for their horn every day in South Africa alone. We support anti-poaching, monitoring and research operations, working to protect black rhino in Namibia and the rare one-horned Indian rhino in Assam. Image Credit: Dave Back PAINTED DOGS One of Africa s rarest carnivores, the painted dog is facing extinction. We support anti-poaching operations, education activities and work with local communities to save the painted dog and other wildlife in Zimbabwe. Image Credit: Will Burrard-Lucas

Working in Zambia we support rescue and rehabilitation, education and awareness and law enforcement to reduce the threat to pangolins. 6 SNOW LEOPARDS This elusive cat is under threat from poachers, mining and from conflict with herders. We support monitoring, research, community programmes and park protection to help ensure the survival of the snow leopard in Mongolia and Kyrgyzstan. Image Credit: TIGERS There are thought to be only 3,500 tigers left in the wild. Illegally killed for their skins and body parts, DSWF launched the TigerTime campaign to help raise awareness of the issues facing this iconic cat. We fund tiger protection projects in India, Russia and Thailand, as well as wildlife crime and illegal trade investigations. We also lobby MPs to help save the tiger in the wild. Image Credit:

7 EDUCATION We work with schools and communities in the UK and overseas to change hearts and minds. We also ensure that DSWF is represented at CITES - the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna - which helps protect more than 30,000 species of animals and plants.
