2 ESA (Endangered Species Act) to provide a means whereby the ecosystems upon which endangered species and threatened species depend may be conserved, to provide a program for the conservation of such endangered species and threatened species, and to take such steps as may be appropriate to achieve the purposes of the treaties and conventions set forth in subsection (a) of this section

3 Section 4 - Listing Endangered A species which is in danger of extinction throughout all or a significant portion of its range Threatened A species which is likely to become endangered within the foreseeable future

4 Section 4 - Listing A species is added to the list when it is determined to be endangered or threatened because of any of the following factors: The present or threatened destruction, modification, or curtailment of its habitat or range; Overutilization for commercial, scientific, or educational purposes; Disease or predation; The inadequacy of existing regulatory mechanisms; Other natural or manmade factors affecting its survival

5 Section 4 Critical Habitat Specific geographic area that contains features essential to the conservation of an endangered or threatened species that may require special management and protection Imposes no restrictions on state or private actions on non-federal lands where no federal funding, permits, or approvals are required

6 Section 4 - Recovery Develop and implement Recovery Plans for threatened and endangered species Recovery Plans provide guidance on how best to help listed species achieve recovery Site-specific management actions for private, Federal, and State cooperation in conserving listed species and their ecosystems Objective, measurable criteria which, when met, would result in a determination that the species be removed from the list Estimates of the time and costs required to achieve the plan s goal
