Types of Animals in the British Isles The types of animals in the British Isles are, in general, similar to those found in other parts of north-western Europe. Some mammals, including the wolf, bear, boar and reindeer, have become extinct. Mammals that survive in the wild include the red deer, roe deer, fallow deer, badger, fox, otter and the common and grey seals. Smaller mammals include the mouse, rat, vole, shrew, hedgehog, mole squirrel, hare, rabbit, coypu, weasel and stoat. There are 430 species of birds, some 230 of which are resident, the rest being regular visitors. Reptiles and amphibians are few and include snakes, frogs and toads. River and lake fish include salmon, trout, sea-trout, perch, roach, dace, grayling and pike. There are more than 21,000 different kinds of insects in the British Isles. TEACHER S COPY

4 C. Comprehension. (30 marks) Read this passage carefully and answer the questions that follow. The Black Searchlight Troops of the second British army under Field-Marshal Montgomery were about to attack a German force hiding in a wood, when out from the trees came a lieutenant in the black uniform of the S.S. and carrying a white flag. To a British colonel he told a strange story. In the wood he said, under the command of Major Graf von Werthern-Beichlingen was an armoured squadron unlike any other in the world. Its vehicles were fitted with a black searchlight a most remarkable German invention, with which it was possible to see at night without being seen. This squadron, the lieutenant claimed, had destroyed 67 Russian tanks in one night on the Eastern front. His commanding officer was willing to hand over the equipment intact on condition that the squadron should be taken to England as a unit to teach the British army how to use the new weapon. Since the alternative was the complete destruction of the unique equipment, this condition was accepted. That same night the entire squadron surrendered and later in May was shipped to Britain. In night manoeuvres on Salisbury Plain, Major von Werthern-Beichlingen proved that his claims were not exaggerated. Pivotal vehicle of his squadron was a half-tracked armoured wagon carrying a black searchlight about a metre across. It was called the Uhu which is German for owl the bird that can see in the night. This searchlight sends out a beam of rays called infra-red rays which are invisible to the naked eye but when seen through a special telescope light up a strip of blacked-out country so vividly that twigs on trees can be picked out 750m away. Such a telescope is fitted to the Uhu. Besides being sensitive to the rays of the black searchlight, it magnifies the image by nine times. Through it the commander watches, quite unseen, for the enemy. All the time he is in radio communication with tanks which, fitted with telescopes sensitive to infra-red rays, are following down the beam made by the UHU s black searchlight. When targets are seen the tanks can manoeuvre to killing position and open fire. 2
