2 Fern Ridge Wildlife Area Hunt Season Hunter Permit Statistics Daily hunt permits are required for hunting the East Coyote, West Coyote, Fisher Butte, Royal-Amazon and Kirk Park units of Fern Ridge Wildlife Area (approximately 25% of lake project area). Permits are free and are available at six checkstations located at area access points. Data included in this report summarizes hunter statistics from the permit areas for the following hunts: Western Oregon Deer Season (Shotgun and Archery) Mourning Dove Season (Sept 1 30) September Canada Goose season (Sept 11 20) (Fern Ridge area closed to goose hunting during other Western Oregon goose seasons) September Youth Upland Game Bird Hunt (Sept 11 12) Western Oregon Fee Pheasant Hunt (Sept 13 Oct 10) Western Oregon General Pheasant Season (Oct 9 Dec 31) Duck Season (Oct 16 Oct 24 and Oct 27, 2010 Jan 30, 2011) Reservation Waterfowl Hunt East & West Coyote units (Nov 20 Jan 29 / M-W-Sa mornings) Youth Waterfowl Hunt Days (Sept 25-26, Nov 27, and Dec 27) The entire Fern Ridge Wildlife Area and reservoir are open to hunting during authorized seasons between May 1 and Oct. 10. From Oct. 11 Oct. 15 the East and West Coyote, Fisher Butte and Royal Amazon units are closed to all public access to provide waterfowl sanctuary. During duck season (Oct 16 to Jan 30) the Fisher Butte and Royal Amazon units are open for public use and hunting until 1:00 pm, seven days a week. The Kirk Park unit is open to hunting only on Sat-Sun-Wed and Holidays and remains open to public use daily. During the first part of duck season, from Oct. 16 through Nov 20, the East and West Coyote units are closed to public access to allow waterfowl an opportunity to acclimate to the area. Beginning Nov 20 and continuing through the end of duck season, these units are only open on Mon-Wed-Sat mornings for the Reservation Waterfowl Hunt. After duck season ends on Jan 30 and continuing until April 30, the East and West Coyote, Fisher Butte and Royal Amazon units are open to public access on Saturdays and closed to public access Sun Fri to provide waterfowl sanctuary. Remaining project lands and lake area are open year-round for public use. 1

18 - Kirk Park Unit The eastern 2/3 of the Kirk Park unit was added as part of Fern Ridge Wildlife Area in 2009 during the re-license process with the Corps of Engineers. Beginning with the hunting season, a permit requirement was implemented for the huntable portions of the Kirk Park unit to get a better understanding of hunting activity in this unit. A hunter checkstation was installed at the East Kirk parking lot and free daily self-service hunt permits were stocked throughout the season. Hunting is allowed only in the eastern (wildlife habitat) portion of the Kirk Park unit. The western 1/3 of the unit is deveoped park land with mowed grounds, picnic tables, and courtesy fishing piers. Hunting and the discharge of firearms is prohibited in the designated park areas and along Clear Lake Road adjacent to Kirk pond. Concurrent with duck season dates, hunting is limited to Saturdays, Sundays, Wednesdays and holidays. The entire unit is closed to goose hunting except for the two week September Canada goose season. The table below details results from the self-service hunt permit cards for the hunt season. 19 2010 SEPTEMBER YOUTH UPLAND BIRD HUNT and WESTERN OREGON FEE PHEASANT HUNT PROGRAM The 21 st annual Western Oregon Fee Pheasant Hunt program at Fern Ridge Wildlife Area from Sept 13 Oct 10 resulted in a monthly total of 1669 hunter trips to harvest 683 pheasants. A total of 933 birds were released throughout the season on a 4-day per week schedule in addition to 190 pheasants that were released for the Sept. 11 and 12 Youth Upland Hunt program. Pheasants were supplied by Mortenson s Game Farm in Caldwell, Idaho. The pheasants again this year were of excellent stock and demonstrated the elusive and wary tendencies of their wild kin. Marianne Brooks handled all details of administering the hunt including unloading, loading, tending, and release of pheasants, and stocking, retrieving, and recording data from hunt permits. Field conditions were excellent again this year for hunters as dry conditions prevailed for the entire season. Hunt tag costs raised this year from $11.50 to $17.00 for the two bird permits. 18

28 Thank You Hunters for taking the time each day to fill out the wildlife area hunt permit cards. Data retrieved from your permits is important for documentation of hunter success and species harvest. We appreciate your effort and support. On behalf of the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, the Fern Ridge Wildlife Area staff would like to acknowledge participation of a special dedicated team of sportsmen that continue to work hard to improve accommodations for hunters and other wildlife area visitors. The Friends of Fern Ridge Wildlife Area - Volunteer Tuesday Crew is a group of talented and capable individuals that arrive at the wildlife area each Tuesday to complete a variety of tasks necessary to keep the wildlife area running. Along with many other projects completed this year, the crew helped with many preparations for the reservation hunt program including camouflaging and structurally rebuilding hunting blinds. Crew members also braved the ice, snow, mud, and water to maintain camouflage materials on the blinds each week and also picked up litter and shell casings. Thank You to the crew: Max Smith, John Harrison, Jim Jacobson, Sam Sears, Tony Mulder, Mike Farrell, Jim Barnes, Marvin Powell, Dave Walp, Gary Wills, Dusty Lewis, Steve Taylor, Doug Dewald, Roger Hetzke, Bruce Tait and Marvin Sherman. Thank you all for your exceptional personal contributions! The Volunteer Tuesday Crew and FRWA staff suffered another great loss this year with the passing of Bud Thomsen. He was one of the original members of the Volunteer Tuesday Crew who was well respected by others within the group as well as all newcomers to the program. Bud brought many useful skills to the job each week and he will be personally missed by FRWA staff and all who have had the pleasure of knowing him and working with him. We would also like to extend a sincere word of appreciation to Master Volunteer Mike Bibbee for staffing the Reservation Waterfowl Hunt Checkstation again this year on Monday mornings throughout the entire season. Mike arrived at the checkstation two hours before sunrise to help with the hunter check in process. He provides an important service to the wildlife area in addition to his role as an ambassador of good will for the Department. Thank you Mike for your continued active support of wildlife area programs and we hope to see you again next season!
