12 Lesso n 6 - What c an I do? To help protect our oceans and all wildlife from pollution you can change a few habits. Only a few small changes can add up to help the environment and make a difference! This is a list for you to keep with you for the next week. See how many of these tasks you can accomplish next week in order to reduce your contribution to pollution! And remember, you can continue these good habits from now on and share them with your family! 1. Use both sides of paper as much as you can to cut down on paper use. 2. Next time you buy school paper, notebooks, or family office products, make sure they are recycled and unbleached paper. 3. Ask your parents to help you replace your house s regular light bulbs with compact florescent light bulbs. 4. Ask your parents to help you re-program your thermostat. When you are not at home change the setting to a less controlled temperature to conserve energy. 5. If you have lights outside, can any of the lights be replaced with solar lighting stakes? 6. Look for a recycling bin. Take cans, paper, cardboard, glass, and plastic to the bins to be recycled. 7. Take shorter showers this week. Turn off the faucet while you brush your teeth too! 8. When you only buy 1 or 2 items at the store, don t take a bag. Just carry them out with your receipt. 9. Pick up 10 pieces of trash in your neighborhood or around your school. 10. Turn off the lights when you leave the room. 11. Bring your own bags to the grocery store for packing. 12. Ask your parents to locate and use environmentally friendly products (dolphin safe tuna, recycled paper products, biodegradable soap, and bulk food with less packaging). 13. Teach two people something you learned about whales and the ocean this week. 14. Keep forming new ideas to add to this list!
