1 Animals Objectives: Name various animals and describe an animal s characteristics. Materials: vocabulary words, picture of your pet/pets, Noah s Ark storybook, ball, animal crackers, animal maze game Vocabulary: Animals Characteristics cat dog squirrel lizard rhino owl chipmunk hen rooster goat otter deer wolf raccoon skunk seal fox dolphin koala whale giraffe monkey shark pig mouse zebra snake donkey sheep kangaroo bear camel cow fish turtle elephant gorilla hippo horse lion panda rabbit penguin duck frog wings strips scales hooves fins tusk spots paws gills claws shell horns fur antlers Session One: 1. The teacher or another American shares about their pet. Tell what type of pet, how they care for it, where it sleeps. 2. Have the students share about the pet they might like to have or a pet they already have. 3. Teach new vocabulary Introduce each word showing the vocabulary card and have the students repeat the word. Eliminate the animals that are most familiar and review the animals that need work. Introduce and discuss characteristics. Break into small groups (be sure to include an American in each group). Select and animal and show it to the groups. Each group should quietly name the characteristics that apply to the animal shown. Do this several times until the characteristics are easily applied. 4. Play Name that Animal Have one student sit in front of the class The teacher will select one animal picture The class must give clues about the animal without saying the animal name. The student in the chair must try to guess what animal is being described. When the student has successfully named the animal then select another student and play again. If your class is large I suggest that you divide into two groups and have two different games going so more can be involved.

2 Session Two: Song: "The Zoo" Sung to "Skip to My Lou" Going to the zoo today. I see a monkey sitting in a tree I see a monkey and it sees me. I see an elephant, big and gray. Big gray elephant is eating hay. I see a lion in a cage. I see a lion that roars with rage. I see a camel with a great big hump. When he walks he goes "bump, bump." I see a zebra, black and white. Seeing the zebra is a sight. I see a giraffe, big and tall. He's not hard to see at all. We saw the animals living in the zoo. Tell the story of Noah s Ark several times using pre-made pictures or draw stick figures in different frames on the board. Long ago, a prophet told Noah that there would be a great flood on earth. He told Noah to build an Ark (large house boat) to keep his family and animals safe, because everyone and everything on earth would be destroyed in the flood. Noah built the Ark. It was three stories high and had rooms for his family wife, three sons and their wife and children- and two of every kind of animal on earth. When the rains came, they were safe and did not get wet. It rained for 40 days and 40 nights. The Ark was floating on the water like a boat does. When the rain was finished, Noah sent a dove out the top window to see if there was land nearby. When the dove brought back an olive branch, Noah knew it was safe to let his family and all the animals out of the Ark. Tell the story in a simple fashion using pictures/storybook Write who, what, when, where, why, and how on the chalkboard. Call on a student to ask you a question using the word where. (Depending on the level of your class, you may want to demonstrate this first). Go through the Five W s and a H listed above in this manner. Have the class sit in a large circle. Toss a ball to a student. The student that catches the ball must tell a part of the story. You could also have them ask a question to the class about the story and then toss the ball to the person who must answer it. Review the story as a class. Break down into small groups and have the students practice telling the story.

3 Session Three: 1. TPR: Animal imitations 2. Enjoy Animal crackers. Discuss the taste and texture (sweet, sour, crunchy, soft, good, bad, etc.) 3. Teach Jazz Chant: My Cracker Zoo When Daddy can't take me to You'll never hear me cry. I ask Mom to drive me to the store, And this is what I buy: A camel with a great big hump, A rhino and kangaroo, A tiger, a lion, A bear and a wolf, A monkey and elephant, too. And then I'm happy all the day As I munch my cracker zoo! 4. Play the game: Animal Maze * Lay the pictures of animals in a grid (6x6 or larger) * Have a copy of the same grid on paper with a marked path going from the bottom to the top. * The students will stand at the bottom of the grid and try to guess the first and following animal. They may continue guessing as long as they guess correctly. * They may move left, right, forward, or back. They may never go diagonal. * This works on the concept of a maze but without walls. * They must speak to you in a complete sentence. * If the other students listen carefully and watch, they should be able to start at the beginning and name the animals in the maze that the previous students named. * The goal is to have the entire class make it through the maze. * I would mark multiple mazes on your page with various levels of difficulty. 5. Tell a story: Break into small groups. Have each person tell a short story about an animal of his/her choice. (It does not have to be true.) 6. If time remains read: The Three Little Pigs
