2 Birth Artemis was given birth to by Zeus and Leto. At this time Zeus was married to Hera, but he had cheated on her and had children with Leto. Zeus Leto

3 Hera s Curse Hera was outraged at Zeus because he had cheated on her, because of this she told Leto, the mother of Zeus child that she couldn t have a child on any Mainland or any island. Leto ignored these threats and gave birth of Artemis on the island of Delos. The consequences of the curse were that immediately after Artemis birth she had to assist with her mothers birth of Apollo, her twin brother. This is why she is known as the Patroness of childbirth.

4 Zeus (Father) Father of Artemis and Apollo. God of sky, lightning, thunder, law, order, and justice. His symbol was the thunderbolt, his animal was the eagle and the bull.

5 Leto (Mother) Daughter of Titan and Phoebe. Mother of Apollo and Artemis. Goddess of womanly demure and motherhood. Her symbol is the veil, date, palm tree, wolf and a rooster.

6 Orion Artemis had closely guarded her virginity up until she met her husband and hunting partner Orion, who was murdered by Gaia. Orion was born when Zeus, Poseidon, and Hermes urinated on bull hide and entombed it in the dirt, to give King Hyrieus (son of Poseidon) a heir to this throne. A theory that supports this story is that Orion s name takes its roots from the word ourious, meaning urine. The most common cause of Orion s death was that he had bragged about how he was going to capture and kill every beast of the earth. Gaia, the goddesses of earth was offended by this statement and sent a scorpion to kill Orion. Artemis placed Orion in the stars.

8 The Iliad The Iliad describes how Artemis got her powers. After being beat and abused by Hera, Artemis seeks empathy and condolences from her father Zeus. While sitting in her fathers lap, Artemis asks for 6 wishes from Zeus. She wishes to. To remain a virgin To have a variety of names so she is different from her brother To be the light bringer To carry a bow, arrow and a tunic that runs down to her knees. To have sixty daughters of the Titan Oceanus Twenty Nymphs who would watch over her possession.

9 The Myth of Actaeon The myth of Actaeon describes Actaeon, a famous Theban hero. He was very similar to Achilles. After seeing Artemis naked Actaeon was tempted and attempted to force himself on Artemis. Artemis punished him by turning him into a stag to be devoured by his hounds.

10 The Myth of Adonis Adonis, a mortal of great beauty and charm was a lover of both Persephone and Aphrodite. Adonis dies different ways depending on what version you read, but most versions agree on that he was killed by a boar sent by Artemis. Artemis was jealous of his hunting skills and perhaps his love. More recent myths however suggested that Adonis had killed Hippolytus, a friend and a favorite of Artemis. The motive being that Artemis had killed Adonis to avenge his death.

11 The Myth of Alodae Otos and Ephialtes the sons of Poseidon were giants, they were exceptional at hunting, and couldn t be killed unless they killed each other. The two twins bragged about how if they kept growing at the rate that they were growing that they would be able to reach the heavens. They threatened to kidnap and rape Artemis and Hera. To kill them, Artemis transformed herself into a deer and tricked them into killing each other.

12 The Myth of Atalanta Atalanta, a infant son of King Lasus was saved by a Artemis when his father abandoned him. Atalanta was raised by bears and than eventually hunters. He was eventually attacked by Artemis because people had said the he was a better hunter than her.

13 The Myth of Callisto Callisto, the daughter of the King of Arcadia, was one of Artemis hunting companions. Callisto had taken a vow of chastity, which was broken when Apollo raped her, she became pregnant with a son named Arcas. Artemis angry at Callisto turned her into a bear. Arcas tried to kill that bear but Zeus stopped him before he could. Out of pity Zeus threw Callisto and Arcas into the sky forming the Ursa Minor and Major Star Constellations.

14 Trojan War Artemis inherited her support of Troy from her brother Apollo who was the patron of the city of Troy. Artemis played a significant part in the Trojan war, she caused currents and waves in the sea. 15 The Worship of Artemis Artemis was the most widely worshiped in Sparta, Attica and at her birth place, Delos. - The Spartans would sacrifice a animal or person to Artemis prior to starting a military expedition. The Ancient remains of the island Delos Sparta

16 Symbols Artemis is best known by her bow, arrows, quiver, hunting spears, stags torch, lyre, and vessel containing water. She is also known to ride around in a chariot pulled by four golden horned deer. Stag

17 Attire In Roman mythology, Diana is usually depicted wearing a tunic and a hunting bow. However in Greek mythology she is shown as wearing a short skirt and hunting boots.
