2 It s hard to believe it is February. Without many skeet shooting opportunities in the winter months many skeet shooters tend to focus on hunting birds with feathers. Recently I had the pleasure of hunting quail in Mississippi with friends at Thornhill s. We have pictures from that trip in this issue. We also have some pictures from some of our duck hunting friends that document an incredible day. Paul Williamson, Lloyd Webb and Neel Heerdink sent us pictures from their recent hunt at a top secret location that yielded 5 banded Green Winged Teal. I am told that this is a very uncommon event and I know these guys were excited. You will also see in this issue, flyers for lots of skeet shooting events. We hope you will encourage your club to send us flyers for your upcoming shoots. What better way to bolster participation than to advertise your shoots in the Red Chute Gazette. You can t beat the Red Chute Gazette Deal (see the last page of this issue). The sooner you get those flyers in, the better the results will be. Look for flyers in each issue and on the web at Speaking of flyers, Gordon Benoit just sent us the flyer for the Briley Louisiana Open. You will want to register early for that one. In addition to being one of the most fun events in the game, that shoot raises a lot of money for youth shooting activities sponsored by the Lafayette Skeet Academy. The Lafayette Skeet Academy starts off the year with the LSA Youth Shoot on March 5 which is designed to get youngsters interested in the shooting sports. Many of our readers have volunteered their time to help with that event. Debbie and I have already volunteered to help this year. If you are so inclined, please contact Gordon Benoit. See the ad on page 9. In this issue L.P. will tell us about the importance of gun fit. If you interested in getting some professional help with your game, check out the flyer for LP s Clinic in this issue. Don t forget our want ads on pages 42 and 43. If you are expecting an income tax refund, you might find something you can t live without on those pages. If you have something to list, let us know. Want ads are free. Debbie, Skeeter and I wish you a Happy Valentines Day! Maybe we will see you at The Sweetheart Open in Biloxi. Wishin you 8, I am A Word From The Publisher Most Sincerely, Doug Frey Page 2

5 Gun Fit By: Paul L.P. Giambrone, III I am often asked, Paul, what common problem(s) do you see amongst shooters that seem to be reoccurring? Simple, GUN FIT is one of the most common problems I see when working with shooters. I was asked recently on a discussion forum how important is gun fit? Well, in my opinion, it is the most important fundamental part of your game. Yes, you do need to have proper mechanics and the correct mental approach, but before you even get to either of those the gun needs to fit you properly. I usually have clients that will either have no adjustable combs or butt-plates on their gun (usually a big problem), or they have one or both and the gun is still not adjusted to them properly. A common mistake is getting someone to fit the gun to you and just leave it that way What happens when you put on a few pounds or lose some weight? Your body changes! When anything in your face or shoulder changes, the gun will more than likely no longer fit you properly. Keep in mind, you do not want to check gun fit when you first get out of the car to go shoot. So shoot at least one full round to get stretched and loose before checking the gun fit. The first concept I would like to introduce is length of pull (LOP). Your gun s LOP is very important in fitting the gun to you. You want to be able to put your face toward the front of the comb, not the middle or back. If the LOP is too short in length, your face will be too close to your hand and you will have a hard time seeing over your own knuckles. If it is too long, the gun will push you backwards when making long turns. That will make your shoulders tilt. We want our shoulders to be square throughout the entire shot, not just some of the shot.. Let s take a look at a few common scenarios that we all see at some point or another in our shooting careers. Once the LOP is correct, the next thing we want to establish is what you should see when you mount the gun and are looking down the rib. First off, I want to say this is the only time you are given permission to look at your beads During the shot, your eyes should be completely focused on the target and nothing else! Ok, so the gun is in your shoulder and your head is down, the beads should be in line with each other and you should see a little space between the two (meaning the end bead should be above the middle bead slightly). Again, the most important thing is that they are in line if they are not in line, your gun will be shooting right or left of center. Page 5

6 Keep in mind, I know we are shooting shotguns and have a spread going out there, but we want every single BB working for us, not just some or most of them. You never know when you will need that last one to get the chip you need to run the box! If you are not aligned properly down the rib, I would recommend getting an adjustable comb so you can adjust it properly and get your eyes centered down the rib. Gun Fit (Continued) Once you are aligned properly down the rib, the next step would be to make sure the end bead is slightly above the middle bead. This allows your eyes to be slightly above the rib so you can see more of the field and your vision is less restricted by the barrel. Also, I have noticed how differently everyone has their adjustable combs/butt-plates etc... Unfortunately, I would say the majority of the adjustments out there are incorrect or not quite right. I have heard too many times where shooters have told me that they paid someone to adjust it to them (many times it was years ago) and have not touched it since. Unless nothing has changed on their body at all, this is not a good thing. I want to stress again, if someone loses or puts on weight, whether it is only 5-10 pounds or more, then their body has changed and the gun more than likely needs to be adjusted. That is why at the beginning of every season, I pattern and adjust my gun fit (if necessary) and will monitor my weight throughout the skeet season. If there is more than a 5 pound difference in my weight, I am going to be at the pattern board again making sure the gun is shooting where I am looking. Think of world class rifle and pistol shooters... If the rifle is not sighted in exactly where the shooter is aiming, what good is the rifle? Gun fit is a major key to having a successful game in shotgun shooting. Lastly, for the year-round shooter, keep in mind that the weather will vary drastically from summer to winter. I know - Captain Obvious, right? Well here s the deal when it s cold outside we have to put on more clothes and/or shooting gear to keep warm. Yes, again Captain Obvious but guess what? This changes your gun fit! You will be surprised to know that just one extra layer of clothes that you are not used to shooting with will change how the gun fits you. Therefore, check your gun fit going into your winter leagues and re-check the fit once the spring and summer get here. You will be amazed at how such a little thing (that almost no one thinks about) can change your performance. That might just be the one or two targets you are looking for to win your winter league or your class at your first tournament. Page 6

7 Gun Fit (Continued) If you have any questions or comments, please me directly at and visit for more information! Please check the website for upcoming tournaments and clinics in your area Next scheduled clinic will be in Shreveport & Monroe, LA February The following weekend, February 25-27, there will be a clinic in New Orleans, LA. Please or call directly for more information about these clinics. Giambrone Shooting Clinics To register or for information contact: pg3@gsclinics.com or Call: Tip of the month: Keep in mind that you may have to check your gun fit with your winter gear and summer gear, for the year round shooters out there. It is not uncommon to have to adjust the gun when you have more or fewer clothes on depending on the weather conditions. LP Page 7

13 Dining on The Road Jolie s Louisiana Bistro, Lafayette, LA Recently my travels found me in Lafayette, Louisiana again. It was my pleasure to have a business lunch at a restaurant I had not tried yet. What a pleasant surprise! My guest and I dined at Jolie s Louisiana Bistro which is named after the painting by world renowned artist George Rodrigue which is entitled Jolie Blonde which is interpreted Pretty Blonde. Rodrigue painted that picture in 1974 and it depicts his vision of the fictional Cajun woman referred to in a song. That song was written by a prisoner in Port Arthur, Texas in the 1920s. In the song, a pretty blonde woman leaves her Cajun lover for another man. The restaurant is owned by Steve and Suzi Santillo and George Rodrigue s sons, Andre and Jacques. The walls are decorated with 30 of Rodrigue's works of art. These images were painted in his early years while living in Lafayette. They depict some of the famous and infamous people of Louisiana history. Also included in the collection are works that depict his popular dinner scenes, like the Aoili Dinner and his legendary Evangeline. Jolie s specializes in flavorful Creole dishes prepared with fresh, local Louisiana and seasonal ingredients. Whenever it is possible to do so, they use ingredients harvested by local farmers and food artisans. They describe their menu as eclectic and the atmosphere as casual and inviting Louisiana chic. Executive Chef Manny Augello shops the Acadiana & Hub City Farmers Market for local organic produce for use in preparing their weekly specials. They source Tilapia from the Gotreaux Family Farms in Scott, Louisiana and hand made feta style chevre (goat milk cheese) from Belle Ecorce Farms in St. Martinville, Louisiana. The menu includes their variations of New Orleans classics like Oysters Bienville, Oysters Rockefeller, BBQ Shrimp, Turtle Soup and Redfish Amandine. Page 13

14 Dining on The Road Jolie s Louisiana Bistro, Lafayette, LA Since I arrived at the restaurant early, I used the time to study the menu and to get as much information as I could from my waitress about the dishes they were offering this day. I find that a well informed decision usually results in a better outcome. After studying the menu, several dishes looked very appealing. The Zapp s Crawtater Crusted Tilapia sounded intriguing to me. I confirmed with my waitress that the fish was actually crusted with crushed Zapp s Crawtater potato chips. The thought of using those spicy chips in Zapp s Crawtater Crusted Tilapia that manner really appealed to me. When my waitress told me that it was the most popular dish on the menu, I had to try it. It was definitely an excellent choice. The dish is prepared by crusting a filet of Tilapia with the Zapp s Crawtater chips and pan frying it to perfection. The filet is then adorned with a delicious tomato and crawfish cream sauce. There must be balance in the universe, so the side dish is steamed buttered broccoli. Well, I must concede, the butter probably offsets any healthy value to the steamed broccoli, but it was very good. The broccoli was cooked perfectly (for my taste), not to soft and not to crunchy. I highly recommend this dish. Perhaps on my next visit, I will try the Pork Shank. Described as a hearty and complex bowl of comfort, this dish is prepared by cooking a 24 ounce pork shank low and slow with traditional vegetables and fresh herbs in a red wine fortified stock until the meat is falling off the bone. Maybe I will try the Turtle Soup or Oysters Bienville. The waitress recommended the Oysters three ways Bienville, Rockefeller and Jolie s own Oyster presentation. I do loved baked oysters. Pork Shank This weeks soup special was guinea gumbo with German style potato salad. You know I have never met a bowl of gumbo I didn t like! Page 14

15 Dining on The Road Jolie s Louisiana Bistro, Lafayette, LA Jolie s also offers Charcuterie de Maison. That is to say they make their own smoked meats in house. Made in small batches, using only the freshest proteins from land and sea, they blend meats and seafood with herbs and spices to create unique sausages, pate and terrines. They also slow cure bacon, prosciutto and salami using pork and duck. Each week they pair an assortment of charcuterie with house-made pickles, and condiments for their guests to savor. Located at 507 West Pinhook Road in Lafayette, Louisiana, Jolie s is open for lunch Tuesday - Fridays from 11 AM to 2PM. Dinner on those days is available from 5 PM to 9 PM. The restaurant is also open for Dinner on Friday and Saturday nights from 5 PM to 10 PM. Sunday brunch is available from 10:30 AM to 2 PM. Jolie s off-site catering is available for all types of events from breakfast meetings to cocktail parties and even seated four course meals for hundreds of guests. They can draw from their own menu as well as that from sister restaurant the Blue Dog Café. Their second floor dining area is available for business functions, wedding receptions and other private functions. If you make to Lafayette for business or pleasure, you just may want to put Jolie s on your itinerary. You will be glad you did. Doug Frey Page 15

22 One of the things I love to do when it isn t skeet season is hunt quail. It brings back memories of my youth and hunting quail with my Dad. He was a big time quail hunter. He trained his own dogs which were usually Pointers. We also kept my Uncle Robert s dogs for him and those were usually Setters. At one time we had 18 dogs at our house. Now, to be honest, one of those was a pet Collie and five were Beagles. All the rest were quail huntin Pointers or Setters. Mississippi Quail Dad and Uncle Robert would sometimes use pigeons to train their dogs. They had a box trap on the roof of the Court House in Amite that they used to catch the pigeons. It was sort of a community service we provided to the citizens of our home town. You know, pest removal. Of course, we were hunting wild quail and back then (the 1960s) and there were still a lot of wild quail to be found. Nowadays, I don t have any quail dogs and I am told there aren t many wild quail to be found. Fortunately, there a number of commercial operations around that make it easy for anyone who wants to hunt quail to satisfy that itch at a reasonable cost. I have written about such excursions at Thornhill s last year in the March issue of the Red Chute Gazette. Dana Vutera following the dogs Randy Brownlee waiting for the flush Recently, I had the pleasure of visiting Thornhill s Shooting Preserve in Jayess, Mississippi again with good friends, Dana Vutera of Baton Rouge and Randy Brownlee of Gulfport Mississippi. Wayne Thornhill has always shown us a good time and this trip was no different. Wayne s birds are very good flyers for pen raised birds. While they are certainly not as fast as wild birds, they will definitely give you a run for your money. Looking for a dead bird Page 22

23 One nice thing about hunting quail at Thornhill s is you know you are going to get ample shooting opportunities. You decide how many of those you want and Wayne and his father Conn will arrange it. On this trip, we asked for 60 birds. There is nothing quite like watching good bird dogs work. Watching them do their thing is half of the fun. While the natural instincts are genetic, it takes a lot of work to train the dogs to hunt close to their master and to overcome the urge to flush the birds before they are given the signal. Wayne s dogs are very well trained and a pleasure to hunt with. Wayne uses a Labrador to flush his birds. That way, his pointing dogs are less tempted to break a point. They all seem eager to retrieve. Particularly since he rewards them with a treat when they do. Normally Wayne does not carry a shotgun. You see him holding mine in a few of these pictures. He offered to do so to facilitate my picture taking. As a reward, we invited him to shoot a few birds with us. Dana and I were shooting 20 gauge shells and Randy was using 28 gauge. I think 28 gauge is probably perfect, but I didn t have any loaded and I didn t want to shoot my competition loads. Wayne has a client that likes to shoot these bird with a Taurus Judge pistol with an 8 inch barrel. That gun fires.410 bore shells and I bet it is really fun to shoot. Thornhill s can provide half day hunts and full day hunts. You can use your dogs or Wayne will provide his. Mississippi Quail Page 23

26 Mississippi Quail There is nothing like the rush of a covey flush. The dogs point, the tension mounts then an eruption of feathers as quail buzz bombs take off in every direction. It will get your adrenalin going. It really helps to have two or three hunters. Anymore than that is not safe, unless you take turns shooting. You must constantly be aware of your shooting partners and always make sure you don t point a gun at anyone (dogs included). You don t want to be on the news. With birds going in every direction, it helps to have extra eyes watching for the direction any escapees went. You will be hunting for them shortly. Personally I like to hunt with an over and under which I carry broken open except when the dogs are pointing. It is easier than remembering to turn a safety on and off and lets everyone else know you are safe. Page 26

30 Thank you Randy Brownlee for loaning forgetful me your camera so that I could share these pictures with our readers. Thank you Dana Vutera for lunch at the Dinner Bell. That really hit the spot after a day in the field chasing quail birds. If you think you would like to give Thornhill s a try, give Wayne a call. Thornhill s offers two hunts a day on Monday through Saturday from October to mid April. You can reserve a half or a full day hunt. The minimum is a 20 bird 1/2 day hunt. They can handle parties of up to 12 people. Non-residents can obtain a special hunting preserve permit on site for $15. That permit is good for a year. Check it out at: thornhillshootingpreserve.com Or call Wayne from 5-9:30 PM at: (601) (cell) (601) (home) Wishin you two on every covey rise, I am, Most Sincerely, Doug Frey Mississippi Quail Page 30

33 Banded Teal Those of you who have visited Red Chute Shotgun Sports Club on Barksdale AFB have met Paul Williamson and Lloyd Webb. Both are retired from the U. S. Air Force. Lloyd served as Club Manager for many years and volunteers as Chef for many of the shoots and activities at the club. Paul is Manager of Outdoor Recreation and oversees the operations of many outdoor facilities on the base, including Red Chute Shotgun Sports Club and the Camp Grounds. Both have served as volunteer referees for shoots. They also happen to be close friends and hunting buddies. Duck hunting is one of their passions. On a recent duck hunt on at an undisclosed location [read that top secret] on the Red River, Paul, Lloyd and another buddy MSgt Neel D. Heerdink shot 5 banded Green Wing Teal. Paul and Lloyd pose below holding the four they shot. Although many of the serial numbers were almost sequential, each banded bird came in a separate group. Good hunting guys! Page 33

51 Mission Statement The Red Chute Gazette Deal The goal of the Red Chute Gazette is to promote the game of American Skeet. Our target market includes Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and Texas. These states comprise Zone VI within the National Skeet Shooting Association. Our goal is accomplished through publication and distribution an Internet only magazine containing items of interest to those individuals participating in, promoting and supporting registered skeet shoots. Subject matter includes calendars of upcoming events, shoot flyers, shoot reports and pictures. Also included are articles and stories about bird hunting, travel and food. The Deal The Red Chute Gazette will include flyers advertising registered skeet shoots for your gun club at no cost to your club. Simply send us your flyer in Microsoft Word or PDF format via . That s FREE! The Catch If we agree to publish your shoot flyers, you agree to provide us with a shoot report suitable for printing in the Red Chute Gazette. Include pictures (jpeg or gif files) if possible. What about Sporting Clays and Trap or other events? The mission of the Red Chute Gazette is to promote interest and participation in registered skeet. Sporting Clays and Trap are not subjects we focus on. We recognize that many gun clubs offer events other than skeet. We are happy to provide commercial advertising space for clubs that wish to promote other shooting related events. We are happy to offer a special package deal to clubs that support our magazine. If your club buys an ad in the Red Chute Gazette for a full year (1/4 page or larger), we will not only include your ad in 12 issues, we will include any shoot flyers (please limit flyers to two pages) for sporting clays, trap or other events your club promotes in those issues at no additional charge Advertisement Rates for Gun Clubs Promoting Shotgun Sports Quarter Page 1/3 Page Half Page Full Page Annual Rate $ $ $ $ Single Issue Rate $37.50 $50.00 $75.00 $ These rates have been substantially discounted for gun clubs.
