1 KOZ Monthly Outdoor Training NOVEMBER: Deer Hunting 7:30 Leader Meeting and Prayer time. This time is imperative and gives the leadership time to prepare their hearts for the meeting and time with the kids. Do not take this time lightly. Be on time, meet with God first. 8:30 Kids begin to arrive. Meet parents or guardian BEGINNING YOUR MEETING WITH KOZ STRUCTURE 8:45 Begin Meeting. All together say the American Pledge of Allegiance. KOZ Prayer: Lord, Thank you for making us strong and fierce warriors for you. We hunt, we fish and we share our faith with others. God Bless America. - Amen Work to get the boys to memorize the KOZ Prayer and use it as a tool for kids who have little experience in praying or are afraid to pray. (Before meals, before an adventure or other times as a reminder of who they are and what they represent). LEADING INTO YOUR OUTDOORS SKILLS TRAINING Leader s first questions/discussion. Outdoor Training Deer hunting. It is like Christmas for the hunter. A deer hunter loves this time of the year. The weather is changing, the holidays are coming and deer hunting is in the air. For many families this is when they refill their freezers with meat. Talk about: What do you know about deer hunting? Have you ever been deer hunting? Have you eaten deer meat. 2 Leader s first questions/discussion: Scripture Training LEADING INTO YOUR HEART TRAINING This Month's Scripture: 1 Timothy 4:12, Don t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity. Leader s first questions/discussion, Bible training: Sometimes when we are young, your ages, it seems people might not take you serious. Some people might not think you can do things because you are too small or too young but you think you can. Maybe you KNOW you can. That can hurt your feelings or make you mad. What can you do to prove you are smart enough to do something? Do you think God can help you Do Hard Things If you behave, try to do your chores, go to church and all the things that you know help keep things calm around your house do you get along with people better? NOTE: Let them talk leave time between when you say something and they can speak let it be silent for a while if you have to they grow close in times of quiet allow Him to come BEGIN OUTDOOR SKILLS TRAINING: IDEA TRAIL Things to do this month: STOP & BEGIN OUTDOOR SKILLS TRAINING Go to butcher or processor Processing; clean and cook a deer (deer burgers for lunch) Visit Taxidermist How to measure deer (Boone & Crockett Scoring) use smartphone app Setup for the hunt (building a deer blind) Camo (what does it really mean to be scent free and invisible?) *Note always add an EXTREME element to your KOZ day. 3 FIELD NOTES: Harvesting the animal is a powerful statement to deer hunting overall. Providing meat for the table and the fulfillment of seeing that complete cycle from field- to- table is a life lesson for most kids. If possible have your group be directly involved in processing the harvest for that day s lunch or feeding others. This lesson will never leave them. Other places for good information and literature. IMPORTANT: Use the opening/use the close, prayer/ sit spots and prayer cards. All groups should use the foundational structure of KOZ each month. The starting, the prayer, sit spots etc. as a common element to every meeting. Everything from sledding to swimming, hiking to fly fishing. The key to going off the trail is to keep the structure in place. Get them outside move their bodies, adventure and exploration. Keep it exciting, keep it real, be intentional about bringing them into a relationship with Christ. OUTDOOR TRAINING CONCLUSIONS Ask pointed questions on the outdoor skills they learned today. Drive home a point What was your favorite part of KOZ today? What part of deer hunting interests you? Guns, camo, being outdoors, hanging with your buddies, all of these things? 4 It is important that you make sure you keep the first things you learned about hunting first, firearm safety, know where you are and what is around you, go in prepared (backpack with knife, safety gear, phone or tell someone where you are going, map, flashlight) Where do you learn about seasons, what deer you can hunt, the rules in your state. Trail Map #1, 1 Timothy 4:12 Deer is one of the most popular wild animals that men hunt and eat. Some people who do not understand hunting and it's importance question whether or not we should harvest them for food. It's important to understand that God gave us all the living animals and plants to eat. This is one of the ways God takes care of us and gives us what we need. Did you know that if we didn't harvest deer every year deer herds would overpopulate. Over population causes disease and starvation for the deer and more automobile accidents and injury for humans. It already happens in locations like northern Virginia where hunting seasons have been limited and many problems of over populations have occurred. Most importantly, God told us that the deer and the other animals shall be food for us. Trust Him and enjoy His provision for us! The rut, for a lot of us, is kicking into gear and the hunting is really getting good. This is the time of year all deer hunters live for but it wasn t always that way. See before God told Moses that everything that lived and moved was now available to us for food the world was pretty much all vegans! Can anyone say NO THANK YOU! Think about, if God hadn t told that to Moses, we would be living in a world where slogans like Beef it s what s for dinner would be replaced by Beets it s what s for Dinner and Pork the other white meat would be replaced by Rice the other white grain. I don t know about you but just thinking about a world like that just makes me wanna go kill and grill something!! But really guys, our lives would be so much different if God wouldn t have blessed us with the provision of animals for meat. 5 what does that mean? We only harvest what we re going to eat and after the harvest we don t waste what God has given to us. One way we can honor God is by honoring what He has blessed us with. WW Drive home a point Trust God's command and direction and know that everything that lives shall be food for you. There are always consequences for abandoning God's plans. Thank God for His wonderful provision of meat. Do you ever see a deer as a gift from God. The next time you eat a piece of tenderloin realize that was given to you by God. God cares and loves us so much that He has given us more than we can ever imaging. REMIND THEM: God has made you as an amazing person. Individual, special and unique. If you have not heard that for a while, I want to tell you that. I care about you, you matter to me. Talk to me if you need to talk. EACH MONTH: Teach the boys: BE STRONG - Jeremiah 29:11, For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. He (Jesus) cares about you, you matter, your KOZ leaders care about you. THE SIT SPOT AND GOD SIT SPOT Purpose: Pass out a blank index card and pen. Tell them if they want you to pray for them or something going on to please write it on the card and you will pray for them this week. It is a private prayer between your leaders and them, they don't have to put their name on the card. If they don't have a prayer, tell them to just put their name on the cards. TO PONDER: Give the boys something to ponder, use the questions above, and ask them to go to a sit spot - let them stay while you prepare lunch (quietly without distracting the quiet moment) - (15-30 min.) SEND LEADERS TO SIT SPOTS! If a leader is not assigned a task have them also find a sit spot. It is good for the boys to see the adult leaders doing the same as they are asked to do. 6 CALL BACK FOR LUNCH - While they are eating lunch LUNCH & KOZ LEADERSHIP TAG GUIDANCE WORK ON DOG TAGS Ask boys if they are working toward KOZ TAGS. Greenhorn, Coyote, LIT, HTL. This is a good time to teach this material. Print their cards and have them ready. Ask if any of the boys are new give them their KOZ Nation dog tag (the first one) GIVE A BOY HIS NAME IN KOZ We have found that giving boys a nickname is a huge tool for them. Giving a boy a New Name has been a game changer for many. A strong, fierce name is important. Jesus and His Father both gave new names. Ask prayerfully what name a boy should have. The leaders decide NOT the boys. It is an honor bestowed, even if funny. As you wait for the parents to arrive: Tell the boys you love them. That they are important. That if they have not prayed to ask Christ into their hearts to come talk to a KOZ HTL (ROMANS 10:9). If a kid wants to be baptized, have them talk to you about it - you can do it somewhere really cool! Perform a service project on site. Teach the boys to ALWAYS leave your area BETTER than it was when you got there. Parents arrive. Greet them and tell them how good their kid did. Tell the boys to invite a friend! Hand out literature or take home materials... A gallon plastic Zip lock bag with their name on it works great each month to collect their take home materials.
