3 LET S START! Do you and your friends play hide and seek? If you wear brown, you can hide by a tree. If you wear green, you can hide in the grass. Your friends cannot see you. This is camouflage! Animals use camouflage, too! They use colours, patterns or shapes. These things help them hide. 2

4 Look at the pictures. Can you see the animals? What animals are they? Why are they hard to see? 3

5 COLOURS FOR HIDING Some animals use colour to hide. This is called concealing coloration. The arctic fox lives in a cold, snowy world. Look left. Everything is white! Look right. Everything is white! So the arctic fox is white, too! The arctic fox uses concealing coloration. Its white fur is the same colour as the white snow. The arctic fox uses concealing coloration to catch its prey. Look! The arctic fox is the same colour as the snow. Can you see it? 4

6 Look out little hare! The arctic fox is coming! The arctic hare uses concealing coloration, too! Its fur is also white. This helps it hide from its predators. The arctic hare stops! It can hear the arctic fox. The hare does not move. The arctic fox cannot see the hare. It hides on the snow. The hare is safe! 5 In the summer, the arctic fox changes colour. Its fur turns brown! 7 PATTERNS FOR HIDING Look at the hungry leopard! It is hunting in the tall grass. From a few metres away, it is hard to see. But the leopard is not the same colour as the grass. Then, how does it hide? The spots of the leopard make a pattern. The pattern hides the leopard! This is called disruptive coloration. Watch out, zebras! A leopard is close! 6

8 The zebras use disruptive coloration, too! Zebras travel together in a herd. Their stripes blend in together. It is difficult for a leopard to see a single zebra. 9 16 How The Zebra Got Its Stripes This is a zebra and his son. Look! They are all white! It s very hot today. They are thirsty, so they walk down to the pond. When they arrive, they see a baboon next to a fire. He looks angry! The baboon shouts, This is my pond. Go away! The zebra s son answers, But why? We are thirsty. The baboon says, You can t have my water. I am the King of the Water. The water is for all the animals. It s not just for you! the young zebra says bravely. The baboon stands up and says, Do you want some water? OK, then. Let s have a fight! If you win, you can have the water. But if you lose, you have to leave.

10 So the baboon and the young zebra start to fight. Suddenly, the zebra kicks the baboon with his back legs. The baboon flies into the air. He lands hard on his bottom. Ouch! Now there is no fur on his bottom. He feels so silly! He runs away with his hands over his poor, sore bottom! The two zebras laugh and move backwards. But they walk into the baboon s fire. The fire burns black stripes on their white fur! The zebras are very shocked. They run away into the grass, where they still live to this day!
