3 The Physics of Hapkido Although Hapkido is often presented as an art, there is a surprising amount of science behind the techniques. Take for example, how the defender pulls if the attacker pushes and the defender pushes if the attacker pulls. This idea is based on Newton s 1 st Law of Motion an object in motion tends to stay in motion with the same speed and direction unless acted on by an outside force. When the defender allows the attacker to continue in the direction he/she is applying force, the defender is using inertia to his/her advantage, only needing to apply a small force in a different direction to move the attacker. Closely related to inertia, momentum is force times distance. This relationship implies that if the defender attempts to oppose the momentum of an incoming the attacker (i.e blocking the attack), the defender will have to apply the same force it took the attacker to gain his/her momentum. This requires significant force (e.g. physical strength) and is impossible with a large/strong the attacker. Instead, the defender can add to the existing momentum of the attacker with a slight redirection, requiring very little force, but shifting the attacker s center of gravity and taking the attacker s balance (e.g. knife hand press moving forward). Newton s 2 nd Law of Motion, force equals mass times acceleration, helps to explain how a small defender can move a much larger attacker. If the defender applies the same force to a large mass (the attacker) as a small mass, the defender can achieve the same result, but must increase the acceleration of the movement. This acceleration is most visible in the circle step, however it applies to all techniques. Although quick acceleration often looks like the use of additional force, it is actually just a rapid increase in speed over a short distance. The acceleration felt by the attacker during a circle step is the result of centrifugal and centripetal forces. Centrifugal forces act away from the center of motion (the defender) and result in the angular speed and force at the outside of the circle being much greater than at the inside of the circle. This allows nage to make a very small movement at the center of circle, while the attacker has to travel a much larger distance at the outside of the circle in the same amount of time. This results in increased speed, acceleration and, because of F=ma, also an increased force on the attacker. Conversely, centripetal forces act inward, toward the defender, allowing the attacker to do all of the work (e.g. rear wrist grabs). All the defender has to do is lead the attacker and turn. While Hapkido looks and feels very artistic at times, the ability to make such circular and flowing movements is ultimately due to the laws of physics. Without science, there could be no art. 5 Leadership in the Martial Arts* Many of us do not look at ourselves as leaders. We are not generals commanding an army, or the CEO of a major corporation or heads of state. We are simply martial artists. But what we might not realize is that our training, our regimen of self discipline through repetition, our self sacrifice to help others obtain greatness is true leadership training. It is character development - internally and externally. We are examples to our peers, our leaders and to those who come after us. We help light the way so others can follow. Those who came before created these opportunities and so in return we do the same so that others may do the same. Leadership in the martial arts is not a matter of skill or rank, it is a matter of heart and mind. What we do and say has great bearing on those around us. We have a responsibility to uphold the tenants of our art, our training, our lineage and the tenants of ourselves. Find the leader in you and demonstrate to the world that martial arts do make a difference. Qualities of a Leader 1. Show respect for yourself and others. Other are more inclined to follow if they respect you. 2. Communicate - say what you mean and mean what you say. 3. Have integrity do what you do even when others are not watching. Don t be swayed. 4. Have a vision - give others a reason to follow you. 5. Be grounded be focused and always demonstrate hope. 6. Have courage. continue to find the silver lining. 7. Be committed lead others by example. 8. Show humility be a team leader b being a team player. 9. Take responsibility take ownership of your role the good and the bad. 10. Show determination be willing to go the distance. Michael Aloia Asahi Dojo, PA *originally appeared in Aikido Now

When I began in 1987 the stats were 1 out of 100 people. Would you like to know the secret to becoming a Black belt and then to move on to becoming a Master or a Grandmaster? The secret is undying perseverance! If you go to school how often do we see kids backslide and turn to the wrong crowd even when they have so much potential? They have given up. Back in high school and grade school two teachers rode me hard and believed in me, at the time I wasn t focused on school work. I cared about chasing girls and being cool with my buddies. These two teachers: Mr. Feltner and Mrs. McCowan believed in me and to this day I sincerely thank them. Because they would not let me give up, they made me persevere and try harder. I say all these things because in the martial arts class (as in life) I see some students with lots of potential give up. Maybe they run into a small obstacle or a branch on their path to Black belt. It could possibly be the fear of sparring someone, maybe breaking a board, or possibly the fear of performing in front of a group. The martial arts class is a reflection of our lives; I ve heard multiple instructors say you can tell how a person treats life from the way they practice in class. I believe this to be true. Never, never give up! Master Will Schneider Elite Martial Arts
