Dynamic and effective techniques SELF-DEFENCE Attacks from the front and behind Side Kick Senior (i.e. 16 years and over) Releases, with locks and strikes to counterattack. You may offer the part you wish to be grabbed but must deal with it quickly. Understanding and effective application of techniques Correct part of foot Power and technique are the primary criteria. Candidate to have participated in at least one seminar since their last Dan grading. GUIDANCE: Candidates must show confidence and good technical ability in all areas of Taekwondo. There should be no serious technical errors and no hesitation or uncertainty in performance of techniques. Candidates should show initiative in performing combination techniques. POOMSAE Koryo Hit your targets, One of your choice and one Action and reaction, to chosen by examiners BASICS Various Kicks (including jumping) All kicks should follow the correct route to target and (Chosen by panel, if required) hit with the correct part of the foot. to One for one kicking Exhibit varied techniques and speed to relevant targets. One Step Exhibit varied techniques (same on both sides). Must include take-downs (Appropriate P.P.E) Sport Contact sparring. Attacks and counter attacks to head and body. Dynamic and effective techniques SELF-DEFENCE Wrist, Collar Grabs & Releases with locks, kicks and strikes to Bear Hugs counterattack. (From back and front) The attacker decides where to grab Understanding and effective application of techniques Techniques must be practical Techniques to be practical and must take control of Thrust & downward strike the situation. Candidate to have participated in at least one seminar since their last Dan grading. GUIDANCE: Candidates must show confidence and good technical ability and understanding of the mechanical principles in all areas of Taekwondo. Performance in all areas must be dynamic and must show fluidity, variety and imagination. POOMSAE Keumgang Hit your targets, One of your choice and one Action and reaction, chosen by examiners BASICS Various Kicks (including jumping) (Chosen by panel, if required) All kicks should follow the correct route to target and hit with the correct part of the foot. One for one kicking Exhibit varied techniques and speed to relevant targets. (Appropriate P.P.E) SELF-DEFENCE One Step Must include take-downs Exhibit varied techniques (same on both sides). Sport Contact sparring. Attacks and counter attacks to head and body. Dynamic and effective techniques Wrist & Collar Grabs Bear Hugs (From back and front) Thrust, slash and downward strike Candidate s choice of 2 techniques (one hand, one foot) Senior (i.e. 16 years and over) Releases with locks, kicks and strikes to counterattack. The attacker decides where to grab Techniques to be practical. Attacker must be disarmed Correct part of foot Philosophy Includes poomsae of your choice plus showing examiners that you can start a lesson with a basic warm up lasting no more than 2 minutes.
4 3 rd DAN/POOM BLACK BELT (3 rd Dan/Poom to 4 th Dan/Poom) TRAINING PERIOD: 3 years from 3 rd Dan. Candidate to have participated in at least 2 MATT seminars since their last Dan grading. GUIDANCE: This rank allows the holder to be a kup grade examiner. Besides having good technical ability, candidates must demonstrate thorough understanding of the mechanics and applications of techniques. At this level, candidates should be involved in teaching taekwondo (although it is not essential that they run their own schools). POOMSAE Tae Baek & Keum Gang Hit your targets, 3 Tae Geuk Poomsae Both hands for action and reaction (Panel s choice from Sah Jang to Pal Jang) One for one kicking Exhibit varied techniques and speed to relevant targets. (Appropriate P.P.E) One Step Take-downs essential Exhibit varied techniques (same on both sides). Contact Sparring Attacks and counter attacks to head and body. SELF-DEFENCE Against grabs Attacker must be taken down. The attacker decides where and what to grab Free style; Thrust only Candidate s choice of 2 jumping techniques Senior (i.e. 16 years and over) The aim is to show control of the knife by means of blocks, locks, strikes and takedowns. Attacker must be disarmed Attacks are continuous Proper control of your striking weapon with appropriate control, balance and distance aswell as moving continuously between both techniques.
5 4 th DAN/POOM BLACK BELT (4 th Dan/Poom to 5 th Dan) TRAINING PERIOD: 4 years from 4 th Dan. THESIS: A 10 page, 2000 word thesis is to be submitted for consideration by the British Taekwondo Martial Arts Technical Team. Candidates may choose any Taekwondo-related subject, in relation to any physical, mental or scientific aspect. GUIDANCE: This rank confers the tile of Master, which carries with it a degree of prestige and responsibility in the eyes of both the publick and the taekwondo community. It therefore involves more than technical ability. Candidates must therefore display a dignified, mature attitude in their personal behaviour and technical performance. Candidates should also be actively and constructively contributing to the development of taekwondo within British Taekwondo through their clubs. Candidate to have participated in at least 2 seminars held by the MATT since their last dan grading. POOMSAE Pyong Won Hit your targets, Both hands for action and reaction Tae Baek Keum Gang (Appropriate P.P.E) One Step Take-downs essential Exhibit varied techniques (same on both sides). 9 7 th DAN BLACK BELT (7 th Dan to 8 th Dan) TRAINING PERIOD: 8 years from 7 th Dan. GUIDANCE: Candidates can take a British Taekwondo Dan promotion Test and receive a BT National Dan Certificate only. Candidates may also opt to test at the Kukkiwon in order to receive an 8 th Dan Kukkiwon certificate. Candidates should apply for this direct to the President of British Taekwondo who will arrange for the issue of a British Taekwondo National Dan Certificate to successful candidates. This syllabus is for the BT National Dan Certificate only. Candidates should discuss the content and arrangements for the Kukkiwon promotion test with the Kukkiwon Secretariat. INTERVIEW: Candidates will be interviewed by the panel, headed by the President of British Taekwondo, prior to the start of the candidate s examination. The candidate should give a verbal presentation to the panel, outlining their case for promotion to 8 th Dan. POOMSAE Hansu Poomsae On-step The candidate will demonstrate superior knowledge of taekwondo and sophisticated application and delivery of techniques. Candidate s choice: minimum of 2 components SELF-DEFENCE (Appropriate PPE) Power test Candidates choice Materials to be chosen and provided in advance by candidate, and approved by MATT Assessment will take into consideration the candidate s age, maturity and longevity within the art and sport of Taekwondo
