1 WEST RIVER DOJO RULES & ETIQUETTE These rules are in place to maintain a level of safety and respect that is expected in a karate dojo. 1. Students will bow respectfully upon entering and exiting the dojo (training area). 2. Remove all foot wear before entering the dojo. 3. All students MUST bow to Sensei and all other Black Belts upon entering the dojo. 4. Inside of the dojo, always address the instructor as Sensei, and all other senior ranks as Sempai. DO NOT address anyone by first names unless they are of the same or lower kyu than your own. 5. Do not talk with your classmates during class. When Sensei talks; students listen. 6. Do not leave the dojo for any reason without permission from Sensei or an Instructor. These are the only people who may give you permission to leave the dojo or work out area. 7. When Sensei or a Black Belt enters the dojo, the class should be called to attention. 8. Higher ranking kyus will aid the lower kyus in their training. Lower kyu grades will follow the instructions of the higher ranking kyus in the dojo. 9. Be courteous to all visitors, spectators and fellow karate-ka in the dojo. 10. DO NOT engage in loud talking, horseplay or other disruptive activities during class. Lessons are to be respected by all those who take part. 11. Abusive, vulgar and foul language will not be tolerated inside of the dojo. 12. There will be no negative or reckless attitudes or behavior towards Sensei, the Sempais and or others in the dojo. 13. No student will provoke violence outside of the dojo. This may result in expulsion from the club. 14. It is inappropriate for any students to visit another dojo, participate in a tournament, or teach karate outside of the dojo without prior consent from Sensei. 15. When at tournaments and other dojo related functions; be responsible, respectful and well mannered. You are representing the dojo as well as yourself. 16. Consider the dojo as your home. Take responsibility for its atmosphere, orderliness and cleanliness. 17. Please be on time to class, this is self discipline. If the class is called to attention and already in a lineup, sit quietly in seiza and do not enter until told to do so. If the class is already in session, enter, then bow to Sensei first and foremost, then any and all other Black Belts in the dojo before joining the class in its activities. 18. Every student will control their temper and behave in a manner that commands respect and admiration at all times. 19. All rules will be enforced by Sensei and the other instructors. SENSEI HAS THE FINAL SAY IN ALL SITUATIONS INVOLVING KARATE AND THE DOJO!

2 WEST RIVER DOJO SAFETY RULES These rules are in place to maintain a level of safety and respect that is expected in a karate dojo. 20. There will be absolutely NO horseplay in the dojo. 21. DO NOT chew gum in class. This is to reduce and prevent the possibility of choking while training. 22. There will be no sparring inside of the dojo without the consent on an instructor. 23. Sparring equipment will be brought to every class; and each student will be responsible for his/her own equipment. This includes: gloves, mouthguards, shin/in-step guards, groin cup (all males) and all optional equipment such as chest guards, helmets, etc 24. Students engaged in kumite (sparring) practice MUST wear protective equipment: gloves, mouth guards, etc This is prevent injury to yourself and to others. 25. It is your responsibility to maintain your own equipment. 26. No rings, watches, earrings or other jewelry may be worn in class. This is to prevent injury to yourself and others while training. (If you are wearing single studded earrings, you may tape up your ears so that they are not exposed). 27. If you wear glasses, remove them for kumite. 28. Weapons will be handled ONLY when given permission to do so, and with proper supervision. This also includes personal weapons. 29. Weapons are never be used against anyone with exceptions to demonstrations and training purposes. WEST RIVER DOJO HYGIENE RULES 1. Every student s gi (uniform) will be clean, neat and wrinkle free. Always remember, first impressions are lasting impressions. Do not come to class in a uniform that looks like you have just slept in it or cleaned the stables. 2. Every student should maintain good personal hygiene. Fingernails and toenails should be trimmed, wear deodorant, long hair should be tied back or away from your face, bathe daily to prevent bad body odour. 3. Every student will do their part to keep the dojo clean as possible. Nobody wants to have to train and workout in a dirty dojo. 4. Wash or wipe down your kumite (sparring) equipment regularly so they do have any foul odours and ensure that they last longer.
