1 Amateur Shotokan Karate Association NEWSLETTER February 2010 Issue No. 51 Free A.S.K.A Celebration Meal The senior students of ASKA, past and present, along with their partners were brought together for a celebration meal dedicated to their President and founder Sensei Jack Warner 7 th Dan. Ben and Julie Brown organised the meal, held in Nottingham near Jackʼs home, and Dave Martin presented Jack with a beautiful silver watch and hip flask engraved by Andy Cummins. People had travelled from many parts of England for this get together to see Sensei Jack the Gaffer Warner. Dan Bradley had come from Glasgow, while many came from the West Midlands and the South Coast. Part of the evening was spent comparing injuries, new and old ones mostly consisting of bad knees and hips but after a few drinks it seemed to loosen up the joints and had most of them dancing the night away as we joined a Christmas party. The meal was a great chance to get together and chat about past and present events, our international successes and exaggerate some of the already built up stories. When we meet up its usually for training sessions, gradings or competitions so it was nice to relax and find out more about peoples interests and personal stories that bring us closer together. After finishing partying into the early hours, the next day saw a few sore heads sitting in the breakfast lounge but it was decided that this should definitely become a yearly event. 2 Seaford Karate Club Championships 2009 Seaford Karate Club Championships took place at Annecy School on Sunday 20th December 2009 and produced another memorable event with everybody having a great evening. All the children took part in the variety of games on offer, including the skipping rope game, kata statues, and pynata. The junior pairs kata was hotly contested with 8 teams deciding the medals. Brother and sister pairing of Sam and Fenella Lea performing Heian Nidan swept aside all others beating favourites Luke Wetherfield and Lewis Finch (Yondan) into silver with a credible bronze going to Finley Jakes and Lorna Sholl (Yondan). In the 3 person Junior team kata Luke Wetherfield, Lewis Finch and James Willetts (Sandan) narrowly beat Mark and Remy Browning with Kristain Beckett (Shodan) into Silver and Max Leonard, Sam Lea and Brandon Harris (Shodan) finishing with Bronze. In the Senior pairs kata, six teams competed against each other with gold going to Sian Pomeroy and Emily Delaloye performing advanced kata Chinte. Silver was taken by Lee Finch and Jan Kus (Godan) while bronze went to Steve Jakes and Matthew Delaloye (Godan). In the 3 person Senior team kata, five teams fought it out with gold again going to Sian, Emily and Angie Pepper performing Chinte, while two teams tied for silver. In the re-match silver went to Damian Shepherd, Matthew Delaloye and Sully Mayhew with Heian Godan and bronze went to Steve Jakes, Finley Jakes and Lorna Sholl performing Heian Yondan. The kumite events saw a change of rules to make the evening more exciting. In each category all the fighters had to fight everyone else and the winner was the one who scored most points at the end of all the fights. The kumite events started with the pee wee under 9 kumite and saw Harvey Burgman retain his title for a second year with a total of 14 points from three fights. Lewis Finch was second with 12 point followed by Sam Lea (9) and James Willetts (4). The cadet kumite saw Kallum Harding win both his fights and score 11 points in his two fights while Emily Delaloye took the silver with 9 points and Lorna Sholl taking bronze with 2 points. The junior kumite saw Sully Mayhew win this category scoring 20 points in three fights with Damian Shepherd narrowly taking second with 18 points. In their encounter Damain actually beat Sully, but the overall result depended on total points scored. It may have been closer if Matthew Delaloye wasn t disqualified for contact scoring only 9 points and relative new-comer Lukas Povilonis scoring 6 points. The senior kumite saw the action taken to another level as the atmosphere reached fever pitch. The crowd were encouraged to cheer for their fighter and in the small hall it really fired up the competitors. Lee Finch won all his fights and finished with 24 points taking a fantastic gold medal while Steve Jakes continues to amaze us all with his fighting skill (without training) scoring 14 points. The bronze medal narrowly went to Jan Kus scoring 11 point while Dainius Povilonis scored 10 points both showing some good skill and some spirited fighting combinations in their first competition.

4 Member of the Year Award 2009 After the Seaford Club Championships Sensei Martin Dean gives a quick review of the previous year, with thanks going to everybody who has helped the karate club throughout the year. The club has had a quiet year on the competition circuit. At the Seaford Invitational Karate Championships our club won 8 gold medals, 6 silver medals and 11 bronze medals while the Ramgarhia Championships saw us win 2 gold, 1 silver and 4 bronze medals. The club has attended courses with Sensei Hazard, Luca Valdesi and Wayne Stolten Smith, as well as A.S.K.A. pre-gradings and panel grading where four students passed their 1 st Kyu. We then got onto the serious awards for member of the year. The previous recipients (Luke Wetherfield, Brindley Martin and Sully Mayhew) all received replica samurais and then it was time to reward this years three successful students. In the novice children s class there were a few students who stood out as possible candidates to win the award. With up to 20 children training every night the winner truly deserves praise. The winner this year showed determination, focus and a willingness to listen and learn what we were teaching him. He is regularly training, passing his grades and winning medals in kata and kumite at the Seaford Invitational Karate Championships. The Novice member of the year goes to Brandon Harris. In the advanced children s class we have many students who are in the running to win this category. This year the award went to one of our members who puts all his effort into training while struggling with balance and overcoming physical challenges. He is quietly confident and never shows off but happy to volunteer his services in class. This year he passed his purple belt and took part in various competitions throughout the year. Our Junior member of the year for 2009 is Finley Jakes. In the adult category there was a hard decision to be made. Three students showed enough determination to win this award but one student shone brighter than any other. With an outstanding attendance record, success in gradings and competition as well as attending courses, including training with Luca Valdesi she has really excelled in her karate recently. She regularly assists Sensei Martin teaching in all three karate classes each night and never complains about her training even when the going gets tough. The award this year has been well deserved. The Senior award this year 2009 goes to Sian Pomeroy

5 Seaford Weapons Course Monday 18 th May 2009 saw Seaford Karate Club host a Bo course with Sensei Wayne Stolten Smith 4 th Dan Japan Karate-Do Ryobu-Kai UK who teaches at Crawley K2 Leisure Centre. Sensei Wayne started karate back in 1986 and then went to study in California, USA with Sensei Kiyoshi Yamazaki 8 th Dan. He has been all around the world training and teaching, and he has a strong traditional background. Sensei Martin and Wayne first met many years ago training with Sensei Kenneth Funakoshi in Crawley and we have been friends since, bumping into each other at various courses or competitions. Since I have been attending Sensei Yamazaki and Simon Oliver courses I have seen Wayne more regularly and he suggested coming to our club to teach us the Bo. About 20 students turned out with Bo in hand to learn a kata Suna Kake no Kon. Wayne was very patient with us as he slowly took us through the movements of the kata before putting it all together. He was assisted teaching by Rob Tewkesbury from the Crawley club who was also experienced at this bo kata. At the end of the class, both instructors gave us a full power demonstration of how the kata should be performed. As a way of saying Thank you to Sensei Wayne and Rob we went for a Chinese dinner at the New Dynasty Restaurant, in Seaford, where we filled ourselves up with huge plates of oriental cuisine. A perfect way to finish off a great training session. Clash of the Titans - Aston Villa v Brighton & Hove Albion The 4 th round of the F.C. cup produced a thrilling encounter at Villa Park where the mighty Aston Villa played Brighton & Hove Albion for a place in the next round. The Seagulls brought up over 6000 fans who supported their team admirably at the near capacity stadium. Martin traveled up and met up with Andy Cummins and David Woody Forbes along with his mum and dad. A score-line of 3-2 saw Aston Villa into the next round and made it look like a close game, but in truth Villa were never really worried by the 1 st Division team, but it still gave Brighton two goals to cheer about, even if my celebrations were cut short as my cheers for Brighton were muffled by my Villa counterparts. A few beers later and a short journey to pick up Sunil from Aston University and we were chatting about the day in the pub before we decided to go and see Colin Creeky Simmonds to celebrate his 45 th Birthday. A packed house saw karate friends from past and present who were all there to make sure Colin had a fun packed evening. After the party Martin and Sunil dropped in to see ASKA Chief Instructor Colin Hexley who has just had the cartilage in his knee operated on, before dropping Sunil back and arriving back home in Seaford at 5am.
