2 Introduc)on This book is designed to show a variety of signs that may be useful to know for daily life around the school, and can be used with all children to encourage communica)on. Signs should be used alongside speaking and appropriate facial expression at all )mes. Signs should be incorporate direc)onality and placement to further express meaning, e.g. if you want the child to sit down in front of you, do the sign in front of you, if you want the child to sit down next to you, change the posi)on of the sign so that it is placed next to you on the appropriate side.

4 Good Afternoon Thumbs up for good. Two fingers move from top lip to face forwards Lunch Time Fingers together hand taps the side of the mouth, then one finger taps wrist twice.

5 Play Time Palms upwards circle hands round whilst lifting them upwards, tap wrist twice with finger. Singing Two fingers move away from mouth in spiral motion.

6 Please With an open palm, move hand from chin outwards and downwards to a flat hand Thank you With an open palm, move hand from chin outwards in one short movement Sorry Hand in a fist, move in a circular motion on left side of chest. Outside Arch hand and arm and move in the direction of outside.

7 Who Index finger pointing upwards, move whole hand in a circular motion. Where Two palms facing upwards, move both round in a circular motion. When Wiggle fingers so they tap the side of the face. What Single finger, more hand quickly side to side.

8 Why Index finger and thumb both out at a right angle, take hand up to shoulder. How Knuckles knock together twice. Which Turn wrist from side to side so that little finger and thumb move in a seesaw motion.

9 Because Left hand flat out in front of you, thumb up, palm facing in. Right hand then slides along the top from fingertips to thumb, then turns and slides down the thumb from the top to the bottom.

10 Line up Both hands, use index fingers, one behind the other as though they are in a straight line. Listening One hand behind ear. Looking Two fingers move out from eye in the direction you want the child to look. Sitting One flat hand on top on the other, palms facing downwards, a single movement downwards in the direction of where you would like the child to sit.

11 Thinking Index finger pointing towards head, moves around in a small circle. Come here Hooked index finger, starting away from body, drawn in towards body. Finish Both hands palms face down, starting crossed over sweep outwards to finish apart.

12 Walk Walk index and middle fingers along as though they are legs. To go Stand Index and middle fingers apart, fingertips on other hand, no movement. Index finger pointing close to body, sweep outwards in one movement in the direction you want the person to go.

13 Yes One hand in a fist, wrist bends so that the hand makes a slight downward dropping movement. No Flat hand, palm outwards, sweep hand across front of body. Now Both hands, palms upwards, make one quick downwards movement.

14 Pen Fingertips together, make an action as though you re writing. Scissors Index and middle finger open in one action. Paper Tap knuckles together twice. Work Bottom hand remains still, top hand makes a repeated sawing movement in line with knuckles.

15 To teach Index fingers move outwards and downwards from mouth to point forwards. To write Right hand makes writing action across palm of left hand. To cut Opening and closing fingers in a scissor action whilst moving arm across body.

16 To draw Fingers together in pincer grip, mime drawing across palm of other hand, making action quite large and expressive. To count Top hand moves down with fingers waggling. To paint Using two fingers as a paintbrush make a smooth up and down action as though painting.

17 To colour One hand moves downwards in a wave action To drink Curled hand as though holding a cup, lift to mouth and tip backwards once. To eat Index and middle finger sideways on, lifted to mouth.

18 Toilet Move middle finger up and down. Wash Rub hands together, palm to palm. Girl Index finger draws a line down the side of face from ear to mouth. Boy Move index finger in a straight line under chin in one movement.

19 Book Both hands flat, palms facing upwards, hands together. No movement. To run Clenched fists and bent elbows, mime a running action by moving arms backwards and forwards. To kick Index and middle fingertips down on back of other hand, flick index finger forward to horizontal. To jump Index and middle fingertips down on back of other hand, lift top hand up and down again to finish back in the starting position.

20 Yours My Clenched fist, palm facing outwards, make a small upward movement with wrist. Clenched fist, place on chest. Name Index and middle fingers together, starting on forehead, bring down to front of body in one movement.

21 School Open hand, small circular movement in front of mouth. Heavy Open hands, palms facing upwards, drop from chest downwards in two movements Light Open hand, palms facing upwards, bounce both hands gently. To weigh Open hands, palms facing upwards, lift hands up and down at opposite times.

To dress Flat hands, palms facing towards body, hands start above head and come downwards and inwards in two movements..

23 To undress Flat hands, palms facing towards body, hands start in front of body and come upwards and outwards in two movements. Computer Index fingers and thumbs apart, facing each other, move hands up[ and around in two opposite circles to meet back again.

24 Tired Index finger and thumb slightly apart by either eye, close finger and thumb as eyes close. Hot Open hand, palm facing inwards, starts at forehead and moves out as hand closes to a fist.

26 How are you? Flat hands, palms facing inwards, move up body then make a thumbs up sign away from the body.

27 First Both hand open, bottom hand stays still with thumb up, top hand makes one small movement to clip the thumb of bottom hand. Last Top hand open, bottom hand closed apart from little finger, top hand makes one small movement down to clip the tip of little finger. Next Clenched fist with thumb out moves from one direction to the other, can be done either way to show direction of next.

28 Same Different Bring index fingers together by moving hands in from being slightly apart. Bring index fingers apart by moving hands out from being together. More Less One hand like a cup, use other hand in a scooping motion, from the side to finish on top of the cup hand. Hands apart, palms inwards, bring hands down in a V shape so that bottom of hands meet.

29 Little Hands open, palms facing each other, hands move inwards towards each other but do not touch. Big Hands open, palms facing each other, hands move outwards away from each other. Whole Fingers spread, hands in front of body more down and together so fingertips touch.

30 Order/sequence Thumbs up sign, hands bounces along three times across body. Half Palms together, slide top hand down until fingers are at bottom of palm of other hand. Quarter Slide side of hand down palm of other hand, then make a right angle by bending top hand at knuckles and slide along bottom of other hand.

31 In On One hand makes an gap between the finger and thumb and the other hand slides neatly between in one movement. Bottom hand face down, place back of top hand onto back of bottom hand. Under Out Both hands face down, bottom hand slides under top hand without touching it in one movement. Start with final position of in, bring hand out.
