1 Yonkyu Blue Belt Requirements Adults To be awarded the rank of Blue Belt, the student must fulfill the following experience, academic, and technical requirements. Student is also knowledgeable of all material and techniques taught in the Basic Judo Program. Student must also show positive attitude and respect in the dojo. Experience 4 months time-in-grade and minimum attendance of 28 practice sessions since last promotion with consistent attendance. Having competed in 3 judo competitions or 3 months service as assistant teacher in the basic judo program. Academic Requirements 1. Count to 10 in Japanese Ichi, Ni, San, Chi, Go, Rokyu, Shichi, Hachi, Ku, Ju 2. Name the three scores of judo? Yuko, Waza-ari, Ippon 3. How many waza-ari for an ippon? two 4. How long must you hold your opponent to score Yuko seconds Waza-ari seconds Ippon seconds 5. What are the two colors of judo gi that judoka wear during a judo contest? Blue and White 6. Name the two offensive ways to score Ippon in a judo match? (1) Throw opponent directly onto back with speed and force (2) Pin Opponent for 25 seconds (3) Strangle until submission (4) Armlock until submission 7. Name the two types of penalties awarded in judo? Shido (Minor Infraction) Hansokumake (Disqualification) 8. How many shido penalties does it take to equal Yuko 2 shidos, Waza-ari 3 shidos, Ippon 4 shidos = Hansokumake
2 9 What score for 1 shido? No score 10. Name 2 ways to get a shido penalty? Put hand in opponent s face, Defensive Posture, or Stalling, False attack 11. How long is a typical judo match for: Kids and Novice Adults, Masters 3 minutes Brown & Black Belt Adults 5 minutes 12. What happens when a judo contest ends in a tie? Golden Score or sudden death until the first score is played 13. What is the meaning of the following referee s gesture? Matte 14. A 5 minute match ends, Blue has a Waza-ari and White has 7 Yukos. 3 Technical Requirements Student must demonstrate good proficiency in the following techniques 1. Nage-waza (Throwing Techniques) Demonstrate 8 of the following intermediate curriculum techniques: 1. Morote-seoi-nage or Drop seoi-nage Two handed Shoulder Throw 2. Harai-goshi Hip Sweep 3. Ouchi-gari Major Inner Reap 4. Kouchi-gari Minor Inner Reap 5. Sasae-tsurikomi-ashi Blocking and lifting foot throw 6. De-ashi-harai Forward Foot Sweep 7. Tani-otoshi Valley Drop (counter and offensive) 8. Tai-otoshi Body drop 9. O-goshi Major hip 10. Koshi-guruma Hip wheel Demonstrate all of the following basic curriculum techniques: 1. Osoto-gari Major Outer Reap 2. Ippon-seoi-nage One handed shoulder throw 3. Uki-goshi Floating hip throw («Jimmy s version») 3. Renraku-waza (Combination Techniques) Demonstrate 5 of the following techniques: Ouchi-gari Osoto-gari Osoto-gari Ouchi-gari Ippon-Seoi-nage Kouchi-gari Ouchi-gari Kouchi-gari Harai-goshi Osoto-gari Harai-goshi Ouchi-gari Kouchi-gari Ouchi-gari Kouchi-gari Ippon-Seoi-nage De-ashi-harai Harai-goshi Kosoto-gari Tai-otoshi («sticker») 4.
