Each different colour represents a different breed. The pink colour (circled by the blue line) is the grouping of the Boran breed. 6 LNR: NASIONALE ELITE TOEKENNINGS Tydens die jaarlikse LNR Nasionale Elite Toekennings, het twee diere uit die Boranras toekennings ontvang. Die eerste toekenning het gegaan aan die Aanhangsel B koei, CI 08/205B van mnr. Lambert Van Heerden, Numzaan Boranstoet. Hierdie negejarige koei het n Ouderdom Eerste Kalf van 27 maande, met n Tussen Kalf Periode van 352 dae wat gehandhaaf is oor 7 kalwers. Hierdie koei het n Reproduksie Indeks van 119 en n Gemiddelde Speen Indeks van 107. Van die groep wat geselekteer is, het hierdie koei tesame met die Sussex koei, die 2de beste Tussen Kalf Periode en Reproduksie Indeks gehad. Tydens die Nasionale Spesiale Prestasie toetsklas, het die bul FPL 16/03 (De La Hoya) van mnr. Zippo Lambrecht, Bloodline Borane, die toekenning ontvang. Dit is n eerste vir die Boranras in hierdie kategorie. Die bul het n silwer meriete ontvang vir die fase C toets by Glen en was ook die enigste bul wat in 2016 n meriete ontvang het. Mnr. Eloff Muller, Senior Inspekteur, het die volgende omtrent die bul gesê: Korrekte bul met besonderse goeie beenstruktuur, wat n aanduiding is dat die bul baie vleis kan dra. n Bul wat die regte kalwers sal teel vir die kommersiële boer wat betref vervangingsverse, sowel as vir die voerkraal. Baie geluk aan beide telers met hierdie uitsonderlike prestasies wat behaal is. 15 AUCTIONS 10 OCTOBER - BULL AUCTION Picasso GF (GF x TLM 04 22) Appropriately named after the great artist Picasso, this younger picture-perfect version of Picasso is not only strikingly magnificent but is also one exceptional block of a beef machine! Broad-backed, deep-bodied and faultless, he has assumed the mantle of our leading bont bull and has been used as widely as possible across the entire herd. His dam is TLM 04 22, a bull breeder of distinction and one of our own super cows. His father goes back to the great matriarch B cementing Picasso s pedigree as a desirable attraction to any stud. 16 Bloodline BORAN Zippo Lamprecht Dewetsdorp Smithfield Ladybrand MHB11-41 PUNCH (K6K 3534 X KPO 1082) Punch is a well muscled bull, with a broad back and lots of capacity. He is one of our herd sires with a uncommon bloodline that can be used on all other bloodlines in SA. He is in the top 4,3% with Growth, 1,02% with Kalf Growth and 0,10% with Fertility. This made him 1 of 9 Boran bulls that is, according to SA Studbook s Beef Bulls, the best Boran bull with a Cow Value Index of 146. 18 KLUBS CLUBS KLUBS CLUBS KZN CLUB The success of a club is being driven by its chairman and we as club members just want thank Mark Hansmeyer for all his time he gave up for making our club a success. KZN BORAN CLUB ACTIVITIES FOR We had a very busy year and we stated with our AGM on the 3 March 2017 at Tim and Karen Ralfe farm Heavitree. After the meeting Tim gave us tour through his commercial Boran farming operation and showed us how well the breed is doing in his area. The day was closed by a braai. 2. On the 15 March 2017 we had a student information day for agriculture students from universities in KZN on Ivan and Naomi Voight Mount Verdi Estate. There were about 90 students and each one received a t-shirt from the club after the junior course. 3. The 2017 tour went to CEDERVILLE, KOKSTAD and RICHMOND. The first day we visited Simon Young, Henk Botha and Pete Muir. Simon showed us how he is using the Boran to produce beef from the veld which was very interesting. We also had a taste of the meat he is producing. That night we braaied at Pete s and had a great time. The next day we joined a farmer s day in that area that showed us some grazing practices and visited the winner of the best veld management in South Africa. The third day we visited commercial farmers, Bulldog, Morris, and the Newborn Family and Karl Aadnesgaard in the Umkomaas where we spent the night. We thank them all for their hospitality. On Sunday morning we visited a dairy farmer who has been using Boran bulls to build up a commercial beef herd. Then home BORAN JOURNAL JOERNAAL

19 5. The Royal Show took place from the 26/05/2017 to the 04/06/2017. We had a very busy show and lots of interest shown in our breed from our upcoming farmers and also from other breeders. Martín our previous Breed Managers presence was appreciated. We had our normal Wednesday braai and club members were well represented. We thank all the members for their support and help with the show with animals and everything else. 7. Mark also went down to Ulundi to give a small information day to students of James Nxumalo Agricultural School with AFASA. 6. Information days were held in alliance with AFSA in the following areas: Sweetwaters, Mpophomeni, Ulundi and Impendle.Three Bulls were donated to Sweetwaters community under the leadership of Nkosi Zondi and thanks to Mark, Ivan and Simon for their contribution to the community. 8. An information day was also held in Underberg in conjunction with RPO. We thank Mark Hansmeyer for representing the KZN Boran club. 4. Peter Kean s Information day with Weston Agricultural School on the 27 of April 2017 was a great success. We gave a mini Boran junior course and students had a small competition in judging animals. Peter gave them a presentation on his farm management and how and why he is using our breed. Each student received a t-shirt. After a successful year for our club we as committee of the KZN Boran Club thank our members for their support. 20 KLUBS CLUBS KLUBS CLUBS MPUMALANGA BORAN CLUB This article, to be published in the 2018 Boran Journal contains some of the information on activities that were reported on in the December 2017 newsletter. Certain information on activities undertaken by the club in the period April 2017 to date are repeated here as well as additional information on the events post the December 2017 newsletter. The Mpumalanga Boran Club Committee Members include: Buks van der Berg Chairman Hilton Philpot Secretary Hendy-Hein Mathews Member Marthinus Botha Member Jason Meadon Member The club was particularly pleased to be recognised by the society at the 2017 National Auction, as the club who had most actively promoted the Boran breed during the year. Although not resting on this laurel the club hopes to increase its activities through further information days, promotion of the breed at agricultural shows, cattle information tours etc., and particularly to reach-out to subregions in Mpumalanga and perhaps further afield (e.g Swaziland) so as to further extend the Boran society s reach and enhance the continued promotion of the breed. In late August 2018 an information day was held at the Pitsa Ya Metsi Boran Stud in the Lydenburg/ Machadodorp region where local farmers and active club members were able to communicate on a range of subjects concerning cattle farming and the Boran breed in particular. Attendees included Boran stud farmers, commercial farmers and other interested parties. In this regard Buks van der Berg introduced the breed and its particular characteristics focusing on the breeds hardiness and ability to thrive in a range of conditions. Simeon Hurwitz provided the audience with a very enlightening presentation on the performance of the breed in the feedlot environment. This information was well received. Hester Theron from SA Studbook provided the attendees with a recent update on the increase in the use of Genomic Breeding Values as a tool to predict performance criteria. The presentation also included information on the genetic Sishen CFH Pitsa Ya Metsi s Herd Sire uniqueness of the Boran breed. The formal presentations were followed with a viewing of some of the Pitsa Ya Metsi Stud animals with Buks van den Berg providing explanation of the Boran breed physical traits. Of significant importance to the Boran breed in Mpumalanga is the increasing levels of interest from potential Boran stud breeders and commercial cattle farmers who, through the efforts of the society to promote the breed, have increasingly become informed as to the suitability of the Boran breed in cross breeding programmes. There has been an increase in the number of new Boran stud breeders in the region and this bodes well for the future.
