16 Resources Resources The Galvanized After Weld Difference Galvanizing - A process which applies a zinc coating to the wire to resist corrosion and weathering. The wire is pulled through a series of acid baths and water rinses, then through molten zinc to produce bright, shiny wire needed for products destined for outdoor use. High Tensile Steel 99% Pure Zinc Galvanizing Exclusive Bonding Agent Marine Grade PVC Coating GAW Our PVC coated welded wire is manufactured in the USA from high-grade premium steel that is hot-dip galvanized after welding with a thick layer of zinc that completely surrounds the weld to prevent the steel from GAW GBW Galvanized After Welding Galvanized Before Welding corroding. The wire is then covered with our proprietary marine grade PVC coating that is fuse-bonded to the wire forming a protective layer that adheres to the wire and will not peel or strip in salt water. Fuse-bonded The PVC coating is tested and certified according to ASTM guidlines for adhesiveness. Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) Synthetic, thermoplastic resin that is produced by the polymerization of vinyl chloride and used for solvent-type coatings. Service-life The anticipated length of time zinc will protect steel; the amount of time until enough of the galvanzied coating is consumed and 5% of the substrate steel surface area shows signs of rust. Resources Galvanized After Welding (GAW) The wire is first welded and then pulled through a tank of molten zinc emerging with a heavy zinc coating. The weld is completely covered and sealed with zinc, protecting it from all environmental elements leading to a longer lifetime of use, typically 5x-10x times more when compared to GBW products. Galvanized Before Welding (GBW) The wire is first coated with a very thin layer of zinc and then welded together. During the welding process the zinc is burnt off leaving the wire unprotected at the weld. The weld is completely exposed to all environmental elements causing premature rusting and breakage leading to a limited lifetime of use. Resources 30

Automatic Welding A welding operation utilizing a machine to pre-engineered continuous welds. Carbon The principle hardening element in steel. As carbon content increases, the hardness increases. Carbon steel A metal alloy that is a combination of iron and carbon. Low carbon steel has the same properties as iron. Ductility and weldability decrease with increasing carbon content. Coating Thickness The thinkcness of the zinc coating, measured in mils or micrometers. Corrosion The deterioration of a metal by chemical or electrochemical reaction with its environment. Cross The wire running across the width of the roll. Also called Stay. Glossary Glossary of Terms Ferrous Metals or alloys that contain appreciable amounts of iron. A term referring to the measure of wire diameter. The Washburn & Moen is the standard in North America.
