3 IOWA CROSSROADS CLC DIRECTOR S COLUMN On a beautiful weekend in September (September 8-9, 2018), three members of the Iowa CrossRoads Region of the CLC participated in the 19 th Annual Des Moines Concours d Elegance that was hosted by the Iowa Automotive Heritage Foundation to benefit the Children s Cancer Connection of Iowa. Those members who participated included Nora Schlenker, Andy Flagge and myself, Steve Fox. The event started with a Saturday (September 8) morning road tour that resulted in a few laps around the Iowa Speedway in Newton and a visit to the Stine Barn in West Des Moines. The Welcome Reception and Exhibitor s Banquet were held at the Wellmark Building in downtown Des Moines on Saturday evening. As always, the food was excellent and the enthusiasm of those in attendance was high. This year, the Des Moines Concours d Elegance honored the Porsche automobile with its own class for its 70 th Anniversary, as well as the Ford Model A (celebrating its 90 th anniversary). Beginning at 7 a.m. the following morning (Sunday, September 9), the show field at Pappajohn Sculpture Park was open for exhibitor parking. This year, 174 show-quality vehicles (beating our old record of 161 vehicles) were distributed among 13 different classes: The Antiques ( ), The Classics ( ), Woodies ( ), Motorcycles ( ), Ford Model A: 90 th Anniversary ( ), Early Collectibles ( ), Preservation Cars ( ), Atomic-Age Collectibles ( ), Volkswagen ( ), Porsche: 70 th Anniversary ( ), Space-Age Collectibles ( ), American Muscle Cars ( ), and The Exotics ( ). In addition to the classes, Below: Sipma s 1940 LaSalle & Trompke s Corvette. 4 Star Cars were also featured including a 1939 GM Futurliner, 1963 Volkswagen Beetle that was featured in the film Herbie, the Love Bug, a 2015 Porsche 918 GT Spyder (valued at $2 million), and Iowa State s 2017 solar-powered PrISUm car. A from scrap yard to completely-restored 1960 Plymouth Fury won a 1 st Place plaque in our Space-Age Collectibles Class and the Best of Show Award went to a perfectly-restored back to original 1946 Chevrolet Fleetline Woodie station wagon. In the end, the day was beautiful, the cars were gorgeous, the awards were magnificent, and over $20,000 was raised to benefit families with children who are battling cancer. In short, it was a spectacular event! Please enjoy cool car and motorcycle pics that follow!

7 Members of the Iowa Crossroads CLC can look forward to 13 scheduled touring events in 2018 to place upon your home calendars! Please note that all events and dates listed below are subject to change depending upon the availability of the planned tours. Look for upcoming event flyers throughout the year that detail finalized plans for each event including actual times, dates, and locations. Please place these fine events on your calendar without delay! I saw no need to break with that restful tradition in 2018! 12 The Early History of Cadillac (Before being acquired by GM in 1909) Authored by Thomas Bonsall; Provided by Steve Fox Source: Cadillac was formed from the remnants of the Henry Ford Company. After a dispute between Henry Ford and his investors, Ford left the company along with several of his key partners in March Ford's financial backers William Murphy and Lemuel Bowen called in engineer Henry M. Leland of Leland & Faulconer Manufacturing Company to appraise the plant and equipment in preparation for liquidating the company's assets. Instead, Leland persuaded the pair to continue manufacturing automobiles using Leland's proven single-cylinder engine. A new company called the Cadillac Automobile Company was established on 22 August 1902, re-purposing the Henry Ford Company factory at Cass Street and Amsterdam Avenue. The company was named after French explorer Antoine Laumet de La Mothe, sieur de Cadillac, the founder of the Detroit settlement in Cadillac's first automobiles, the Runabout and Tonneau, were completed in October They were two-seat horseless carriages powered by a 10 hp (7 kw) single-cylinder engine. They were practically identical to the 1903 Ford Model A. Cadillac displayed the new vehicles at the New York Auto Show in January 1903, where the vehicles impressed the crowds enough to gather over 2,000 firm orders. Cadillac's biggest selling point was precision manufacturing, and therefore, reliability; a Cadillac was simply a better-made vehicle than its competitors. The Cadillac Automobile Company merged with Leland & Faulconer Manufacturing, forming The Cadillac Motor Company in From its earliest years, Cadillac aimed for precision engineering and stylish luxury finishes, causing its cars to be ranked amongst the finest in the United States. Cadillac was the first volume manufacturer of a fully enclosed car, in Cadillac participated in the 1908 interchangeability test in the United Kingdom, and was awarded the Dewar Trophy for the most important advancement of the year in the automobile industry. In 1912, Cadillac was the first automobile manufacturer to incorporate an electrical system enabling starting, ignition and lighting.
