NEWS July 2016 Number 35 Standard Driver Progress Lots of new drivers with us this year, all trying to go faster, probably with impatient parents? Why do experienced car race drivers come to Protrain to spend a day in a kart - because it's more difficult to drive a kart than any other four wheeled racing machine. Things happen at 3 times the speed they do in a race car and the physical fitness required is far higher because it is all action! That is why these guys do this and why your child will take months of racing to become remotely competitive. They have to learn about racing, racing lines and the most difficult area - braking! They also need to build stamina, as stamina contributes to concentration and concentration leads to error free laps, which build into faster laps. The development of a kart racer will fit into the following progress list- 1. Able to drive round without incident but well off the pace 2. Starting to understand speed, braking and racing lines 3. Getting quicker but finding it difficult to overtake without incident 4. Running at a good pace, perhaps almost able to pass the more novice drivers 5. Overtaking people, but only finding it easy to pass the more novice drivers 6. Overtaking, but too slow working through traffic to reach the front group 7. Not far off the front group 8. Battling with the drivers at the front, hanging on but not ready to overtake 9. Up front and trying to mix it by overtaking, possibly taking people out in error. 10. Up front and being able to overtake 11. Be able to lead a complete race under pressure. 12. Only doing what is required to earn a good place on the final grid, a thinking driver, if you do not need to overtake, don't do it!! Look at where your driver fits and take off one step - because as family we always over estimate their progress!!!! Review of Some More MSA Regulations - Starts The start formation of two by two MUST be retained until the kart has passed the start line. Failure to do this by breaking formation could be punished by a time or place penalty. Most circuits have a pair of tramlines within which the drivers must fit, but if there are no tramlines it is up to the drivers to stay in their line. Some circuits have an acceleration line 20 metres before the start line. This means that you should not accelerate before this point, but most of all you must be in formation as you cross the start line.
Blue Flags A blue flag is an indication that a driver is about to be lapped. We do not follow the Formula 1 system, we simply ask a driver to STAY ON LINE do nothing different, if a driver is fast enough to catch them up they will be skilled enough to overtake without any problems. Black and Yellow Flag This is like the SAFETY CAR in Formula 1, but we ask the leader to slow down to rolling lap pace and the drivers form up behind the leading kart, who acts as our safety kart. Once the incident is removed the race will continue with a green flag on the start line. No overtaking is allowed during this situation and karts must stay in formation until they cross the start line at the green flag. More About Tyres As almost every circuit in the country is clockwise (Wombwell is an exception) we are always turning right more than left, causing far more wear on the front left tyre. Most of you have changed tyres because of this excessive wear when, with a little thought, you could postpone new tyres for a good deal longer! As soon as the front left clearly looks to be wearing down SWAP THE FRONTS OVER! This is very easy to do, with both Allan and Dean having the appropriate kit and it will almost double the life of your fronts. Jason will now attack me for trying to save you money, but I will survive longer than your front tyres. Hanging on to your Clips Those of you who take the nose off your kart to pack it away may be suffering from the clips falling apart in transit? To stop bits getting lost re clip the clamps so that they are under some tension which will be enough to keep them in one piece. I am forever crawling round our trailer looking for clip ends and nuts when this trick if forgotten!!!??? Intake Boxes We are having a problem of dirt entering the new style boxes at Rissington, two engines have been jammed by the rubbish. Symptoms are, that even using two or more different batteries, the revs will not rise above the 800revs required to start the engine. Steps have been taken to look into solutions to the problem, with Alan obtaining some angled intake units that throw the air against the side of the box. Doing this on other types of box has helped all classes of kart in the past; the dirt sticks onto the inside of the intake box, which is damp from the influence of the fuel. So using the Alan modification and helping still further by spraying the inside of the box with chain lube (extra sticky), we hope to overcome the dirt problem. Experiments with filters by Alan and Jeremy have not been 100% successful, but a stocking pulled very
tight over the outside of the intake trumpets may result in being the best solution? So disappointing that young William Wren was not running time keeping due to "A" Levels, but we understand and for us not so much detail on times this month as a result. Yet another weekend of cracking racing! Jack Godden, back with us again put up a superb display, taking full advantage of fresh new tyres on Robbie Sims kart, with a superb lights to flag victory in the final. The final was also a very special race. Our two stars, Jack and Robbie, shot off into the lead with fastest laps of for Jack and for Robbie. Taking the cautious approach Robbie left his challenge until the last lap, but just failed to get through, as Jack had superbly positioned his kart having expected the manoeuvre. A further 7.8secs back another battle was going on, this between Josh R and James. These two, just a second off the pace, but again within 3 hundredths of a second of each other on their fastest laps! But that was not all! Next up were five drivers all within 6 hundredths of a second on their fastest laps; wow! Results Heat 1-1st Jack Godden (back 0.27s) 2nd Robbie Sims (back 10.06s) 3rd Josh Raistrick Heat 2-1st Jack Godden (back 6.97s) 2nd Robbie Sims (back 0.85s) 3rd Josh Raistrick Heat 3-1st Robbie Sims (back 0.16s) 2nd Jack Godden (back 7.54s) 3rd Josh Raistrick FINAL -1st Jack Godden (back 0.62s) 2nd Robbie Sims (back 7.8s) 3rd Josh Raistrick Best laps of the day Robert, Jack, Josh R, James, Rachel, Joshua & Leo, Kyle and Ben. Worthy of Note Josh R in two races matched his best time of Rachel in two races also had almost identical times on and Leo had laps of and Ben had laps of and What this means is that the drivers did not back off, but did what was clearly their very best throughout all of the races; good stuff! And a word for Ben, visiting Fulbeck for the first time, absolutely in there with the regulars! Fast becoming the high light of the day for the marshals, the Tyro final was once again a display of skill, tenacity, minor errors, some luck and some bad luck; but that's motor racing! For our leaders, in numerical order Jack, Jensen and Robbie, it's a matter of throwing a dice to see who would win and who perhaps deserved to win; but that is also motor racing! Each of the three front teams working hard to out fox each other, experimenting with settings and pushing their own limits, to give us great racing. But it's not only the front runners. Our odd man out, so to speak, is Josh Raistrick. Not quite on the pace of the stars, just half a second off their times, and threatening to join them soon, that puts Josh half a second ahead of following group. Here the second of the two great races was going on, with James, Archie (great to see him back), Rachel, Leo and Ben battling it out in a race of their own, just about a
second off the pace. Results Heat 1-1st Jensen Woodruff (back 0.10secs) 2nd Jack Godden (back 0.7secs) 3rd Robert Sims Heat 2-1st Jack Godden (back 0.52secs) 2nd Robert Sims (back 3.2sec) 3rd Jensen Woodruff Heat 3-1st Jack Godden (back 2.69secs) 2nd Jensen Woodruff (back 1.5secs) 3rd Robert Sims FINAL - 1st Robert Sims (back 1.18secs) 2nd Jack Godden (back 0.14 secs) 3rd Jensen Woodruff Lap times Race by Race - RED = A driver's best time of the meeting YELLOW = a good series, what we call a package, at least three laps close together. All About our " competition" The most important events of the season are almost upon us! The competition, effectively the Tyro Championship, will be held at Rissington and Fulbeck in the months of August (month 8), September (month 9) and October (month 10). It has to be called a raffle as the MSA do not accept a Championship for us, but prizes for the drivers with the highest point's scores who will be deemed to have won the raffle. The prizes will be in the form of trophies for those whose points indicate they are the top 5 drivers in this raffle/competition, and therefore we consider they are the top drivers in Tyro for We run this competition each year, giving new drivers the opportunity to join with us and build their knowledge in good time for the end of season competition. Our 2015 top driver winning this competition was Robert Sims. To indicate the driver who heads the competition we have a golden T shirt, just for fun and to encourage those watching to ask the question "What does that mean?" The scoring for the "competition" will be 10 points down to 1 for the top 10 in the heats, and 3 X the values for the finals; e.g. 30, 27, 24 etc. Each driver must attend at least two meetings at each circuit. A driver's best 4 sets of heat results and their best 4 final results will count in the final total. This may be exactly what happens for a person who takes part in every event, or count as a missed meeting for those who are unable to attend all events. A tie on points will be given to the driver with the fastest 2016 lap time on each circuit when added together, if these are equal their second fastest 2016 lap times will be used. Because we are mixing MSA and Non MSA events, any judicial due to an incident not acted upon by the Clerk of Course, will be reviewed by Steve and two neutral parents, and place penalties administered to the results, not the results provided by Rissington or Fulbeck. This is the only way we can be sure that all drivers adhere to the Tyro ethic during the events on the different circuits, with different staff. Points, and any Championships operated by the two clubs continue to be for their particular Club Championships and have no relation to this competition. You have to be registered with each club as a member to be in their Club Championships. Tyro club championship points are available on the two club's web sites, but they may take a little effort to
find them! Regards. Steve
