1 ITEM 06 ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Loughborough Flames: Lighting the way towards London 2012 Honour the past, but look to the future This statement captures the essence of the Loughborough Flames project. Loughborough College has a special historical link to the Olympics; in 1948 the Olympic relay torch was created by the College engineering department, and has now been inspired by the Games of the thirtieth Olympiad, London 2012, to enrich the lives of the young people in Loughborough and beyond. Using the 1948 Olympic torch and London 2012 as a focus, Loughborough College has formed a partnership with the British Heart Foundation aimed at inspiring young people to live physically active lives whilst learning about the Olympic and Paralympic values. Young leaders from the College receive Active Club Training and resources from the British Heart Foundation that provide a sound knowledge base of health messages, ideas and skills to deliver healthy activities. The cohort of College volunteers visit primary schools in Loughborough and deliver a programme of activities including the health, Olympic and Paralympic messages. Upon completion of the programme the young leaders organise the Loughborough Flames Festival of physical activities at Loughborough College. Together the school children take part in this celebration event organised and run by the young leaders from the College and attended by British Heart Foundation s Hearty. In June 2009 the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games, (LOCOG), recognised the Loughborough Flames: Lighting the way towards London 2012 project with the Inspire Mark logo, the first to be awarded to a sport-related project in the East Midlands region. 12-1

2 What is Loughborough Flames? Loughborough College, in partnership with the British Heart Foundation have created the innovative and exciting Loughborough Flames Project to provide a health legacy for local communities. The project has been formally recognised by the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (LOCOG) with the accreditation of the much sought after Inspire Mark. The British Heart Foundation provides young sports leaders with Active Club training on physical activity and health to enable them to deliver an activity programme to primary school children. The leaders also receive information on the Olympics and its values and the Flames programme aims to use the upcoming 2012 Games as a focus to inspire children to be more physically active. The programme culminates with a Flames Festival, organised by the leaders. This brings all the children together to celebrate their achievements and run with the College s own 1948 Olympic torch. How can I get involved? With the project being so successful in Loughborough there are now plans to extend Loughborough Flames nationwide. The following resources will be available for you to set up your own Flames project: FREE DVD containing all the resources needed to get the project up and running, including video clip, schemes of work for young leaders, mapping the project against leadership awards, worksheets etc. FREE range of high quality British Heart Foundation resources that can support the project in schools/settings. 3 Loughborough College Loughborough Flames Currently a Loughborough based project inspired by London 2012 that aims to teach children about the values of the Olympics and Paralympics as well as delivering health messages. Delivered by College young leaders, who have been trained by the British Heart Foundation. Extensions to the project include: Jan 2010 A DVD aimed at going nationwide with delivery by the Further Education Sports Coordinator s, a pilot will run in 5 hard to reach areas of the UK before going live in September Jan 2010 Loughborough Flames to target special schools by making the Flames fully inclusive. March goes live. Elite Athletes Loughborough College has strategically placed itself at the heart of elite sport to attract elite athletes who are training for London A wide range of elite athletes choose Loughborough College to study due to the flexible education programmes that we offer. In addition we deliver the Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence (AASE), on behalf of a number of different national governing bodies. These athletes are training for 2012 and require a flexible programme of study delivered through distance learning. Loughborough College are planning for the London Olympics and Paralympics legacy by targeting elite athletes in the year old age group. We are creating an elite performance centre where the athletes will live for up to 48 weeks of the year. The students will access world class coaching offered by locally based national governing bodies, education at the College and pastoral care delivered by highly trained staff. 12-3

4 The Cultural Olympiad Loughborough College has begun a project looking at intergenerational links between grand parents born or living in 1948 and school children within the local area. We are looking at the experiences of the older generation, comparing and contrasting these to the current young people. The plan is also to take part in some activities where the groups will be mixed. These events will be known as Olympage events. An extension to the project will be to create a journal leading up to 2012 through embedding the work within the existing school programme of study. Almost like a cross-curricular experience. The Japanese Team The Japanese team are being hosted by Loughborough University. Loughborough College are in partnership with the University and will be assisting in several areas including facilities, accommodation and potentially basic English courses for Japanese visitors. Volunteering at East Midlands Airport We are looking to set up a Welcome to the East Midlands team of volunteers at the airport in The College has over 100 languages spoken and we want to use this resource to provide visitors to the East Midlands with the highest quality welcome that we can. 12-4
